The Outer Banks is a set of small barrier islands that stretch over 200 miles along the North Carolina shore, starting just south of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and covering most of the North Carolina coast.  You can enjoy just about any water sport in the Outer Banks, including body boarding, surfing, scuba diving, kite surfing, jet skiing, parasailing, etc.

Planning a trip to the Outer Banks can be daunting because you have so many options on where to stay and what to do.  Here are a few ideas of what to think about as you plan an Outer Banks vacation.

There are so many things to do in the Outer Banks that it’s no wonder it is one of the most popular North Carolina vacations. All those options can make planning an Outer Banks family vacation seem challenging at first. This Outer Banks travel guide is designed to make planning an OBX vacation easier.

This Outer Banks visitors guide has three parts. In this first part, I provide a general overview of the region and Outer Banks beaches. The second post covers where to stay in the Outer Banks, and the third post discusses things to do in OBX. Put them all together and you have a complete guide to Outer Banks, North Carolina beach vacations!

Outer Banks Vacation planning

Where is the Outer Banks?

The Outer Banks is a string of barrier islands at the northeast end of North Carolina. The Outer Banks stretch from Corolla, just south of Norfolk, VA and east of Elizabeth City, NC to Ocracoke, east of New Bern (North Carolina’s first capital city). The islands of the Outer Banks run along the eastern edge of Currituck Sound and Pamlico Sound.

The Outer Banks islands and small towns are connected by Highway 12. There are two ways in (by road) and another, slower way in, by ferry (weather permitting). Most travelers come by road, from Route 64 through Manteo to Route 12 which connects the Outer Banks from north to south. The two routes come together at roughly the center point of these barrier islands. Travelers can turn left (north) to go to Nags Head, Duck and Corolla. Or they can turn right (south) and head to Avon, Buxton and Hatteras.

What are the best places to stay in the Outer Banks?

When planning Outer Banks family vacations, one of the most important considerations is where to stay. It takes more than an hour to drive from the north end of the OBX to the southern end of the region. When considering your OBX vacation, think about which Outer Banks attractions most interest your family. Each region is known for something unique.

North End of the OBX: Duck and Corolla

The northern reaches include the quaint towns of Duck and Corolla, home to the famous “wild horses.” Visitors here can expect world-class spas, upscale lodging options and high end dining. From North Carolina, get here by traveling east on NC 64 until turning left on Hwy 12. Visitors from the north (Virginia) come south on Route 158 before crossing the Wright Brothers’ Bridge and turning left.

Things to do in Corolla, North Carolina. Corolla is the he most remote point on the Outer Banks, and is made up mostly of Currituck National Wildlife Refuge. Perhaps you have heard of the wild horses of Corolla? Other activities in Corolla include lounging on the beach, walking and biking the trails of the Refuge and relaxing at expansive Corolla beach rentals with great views.

Things to do in Duck, North Carolina. Duck is located just south of Corolla. Duck is known for having great beaches, water sports and outdoor activities, fine dining, and eclectic shopping. Every October, the town hosts the Duck Jazz Festival which draws people from around the globe. The town is built for tourists — easy to navigate by bike or on foot. High end and casual restaurants are connected by the Duck Trail and by an expansive boardwalk on the sound side of Highway 12.  Duck is quite dog friendly, too — just follow leash laws!

Places to see in Duck at the Outer Banks

Central area at the Outer Banks: Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head

Most central, and also the most populous area, this section of the Outer Banks is closest to the North Carolina mainland. Families planning an Outer Banks vacation and wanting flexibility should consider staying in this area. This area has the most Outer Banks rental homes available: Soundside (facing the Albemarle Sound), Oceanside (homes along the Beach Road, though not necessarily oceanfront), and “between the highways” (Between Highway 12, aka “Beach Road,” and Hwy 158). Amenities like family friendly (chain and non-chain) restaurants, movie theaters, putt putt golf courses and shopping centers are easy to get to making this an easy-to-plan Outer Banks vacation.

Things to do in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Kitty Hawk has a great mix of laid-back and upscale vacation getaway. Those who enjoy quiet getaways, nature and golfing might prefer the Soundside area. Oceanside vacationers will appreciate fabulous views of the Capital one 360 spark business Ocean, but the beaches in this area are narrow providing only limited space for beach-combing, sand castles and lounging. “Between the highways” vacationers can enjoy easy access to the amenities of the area, with an easy walk to the beach. With afternoon rains a regular part of the Outer Banks summer, having access to shopping and theaters is a great perk!

Things to do in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Kill Devil Hills has 6,000 year-round residents making it one of the larger permanent communities on the Outer Banks. It’s also one of the most popular vacation destinations with a number of shopping, dining, entertainment and lodging options. Like Kitty Hawk, the sound side is quieter, offering quaint cottages for family escapes. Along the Beach Road, vacationers can enjoy great surfing and wide stretches of sandy beaches to relax. Whether staying beach front or “between the highways,” easy access to entertainment and dining options provide something who is the tarrant county medical examiner everyone.

Things to do in Nags Head, North Carolina. The most popular Outer Banks vacation destination, Nags Head is quintessential “OBX” (though I never knew it). Wide, sandy beaches with great surf are good for families and adrenaline junkies. Attractions like Bodie Island Lighthouse, Jennette’s Pier and Jockey’s Ridge State Park are unique to the area. “Between the highways” lodging provides families everything families might need for a weeklong Outer Banks vacation from shopping and dining to indoor activities for those beach breaks.

Southern end of the Outer Banks: Avon, Buxton, Hatteras Village and Ocracoke Island

At Highway 12, turn right to discover this unique region, home to fishing charters and great seafood. Less crowded than the central region, this area offers a surprising number of activities for active families. This area begins at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, a natural treasure the whole family will enjoy. Beyond that, you’ll see Rodanthe, a small community made famous by the Nicholas Sparks’ novel (and movie) Nights in Rodanthe. For what it’s worth, yes, the house is real — and it is a rental (though it’s usually booked more than a year in advance).

Things to do in Avon, North Carolina. This small town offers a great blend of attractions and solitude. Avon is known for its unspoiled beaches which are lined by beautiful dunes and luxurious beach mansions. The town boasts many restaurants (including a few chain restaurants), a spa, gift-shops, a putt putt course and a fishing pier, all offering conveniences that make vacationing easy. Studio 12, a local art shop that offers classes, is a great place to make your own Outer Banks inspired souvenir. At the same time, those who want a quiet getaway are sure to find it. Because Avon is so centrally located, it’s the best “quiet spot” on the Outer Banks for those who also want the fun and excitement of Nags Head to the north.

Things to do in Buxton, North Carolina. Buxton’s geography makes it a unique destination among all the Outer Banks towns. Buxton is located at the point — where Hatteras Island goes from running primarily north-south to east-west. At this “elbow” the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse stands guard. The lighthouse is open spring through fall to visitors. The rugged waterfront is popular for surfing, which is among the best in the world due to the flow of the Labrador Current from the north and the Gulf Stream from the south. Other activities in the Buxton area include sea fishing, driving 4X4s on the beach (license required), hiking the trails of Buxton Woods and kite boarding on the sound side. Families with young kids who want to play in the waves might prefer a different area, but those who want to see waves crash on the beach will love it here.

Things to do in Hatteras, North Carolina. At the southern tip of Hatteras Island, the town of Hatteras Village (as it is officially named) is a haven for sea fishing. This section of the Outer Banks is the quietest of the southern end of Outer Banks. This coastal fishing village also has restaurants (some which cook your fresh catch), art galleries, charter fishing and tour boats. On vacation at Hatteras Island, enjoy charter fishing in the morning, watch as your fish is cleaned at the docks, and then head to the local restaurant to have it prepared for dinner!

Outer Banks activities include fishing charters in Hatteras

Things to do at Ocracoke, North Carolina. Ocracoke is the southern tip of the Outer Banks, most easily reached from the mainland by ferry which runs year-round (limited in late fall family fun outer banks nc winter). Ocracoke considers itself “the cure for the common beach.” Because of its location, it is less populated than some of the other beaches. But, there’s still lots to do here: sailing, kayaking, touring the lighthouse and hanging out on the beach. Adventures include discovering the lore of Blackbeard the Pirate, fishing charters, biking and kite surfing.

What is the best place to stay at the Outer Banks? There is no “one size fits all” at the OBX. If you want the convenience of movie theaters, shopping, restaurants and other activities, the central towns are best. If the Corolla wild horses or quiet spa getaways are more your thing, then head north. If water sports, especially kite boarding and surfing, are what you want, head south. As you can see, the Outer Banks offers a wide variety of vacation experiences. So which is best? That depends on what you would enjoy most. Have you been to the Outer Banks before? What do teacher salary rockland county ny think is the best place for an Outer Banks vacation?

How to Spend a Week in the Outer Banks of North Carolina

While the Outer Banks is little more than a long sandbar, these barrier islands have gained a well-deserved reputation among travelers from around the world. Part of their allure stems from their broad appeal—whether you’re a solo traveler chasing adventure or vacationing with extended family, the Outer Banks is sure to please. And with the peak summer season winding down, now is an ideal time for a visit, with fewer crowds, cheaper lodging, and still-warm temperatures perfect for enjoying the area’s abundant outdoor activities.

First, a few words on lodging and logistics. If you’re flying to the Outer Banks, the two closest airports are Norfolk International, about 80 miles north, and Raleigh Durham international, about 190 miles west. Whether you fly or live close enough to drive, you’ll need to use one of two main bridges that provide access to the islands. The 3-mile Wright Memorial Bridge accesses the northern beaches, while the 5.2-mile Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge intersects with the islands south of Nags Head. Whichever bridge is the most appropriate for your destination, try to time your crossing outside the hours of 11 am and 4 pm, since traffic is heaviest within these times.

If you’re renting a vacation home, opt for a Friday to Friday or Sunday to Sunday rental if possible. Saturday is the busiest day by far, and you’ll be caught up in traffic during the changeover from one group of visitors to the next. But keep in mind that vacation homes aren’t the only place to stay in the Outer Banks. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, there are plenty of camping options beginning in Kitty Hawk and extending south all the way to the remote Portsmouth Island—where you can camp right on the beach.

Northern Beaches

48HObtDWD6EiCCmyQm6OSs

The Northern beaches are the most visited in the Outer Banks, including (from north to south) the towns of Carova, Corolla, Duck, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head. These areas may see the biggest crowds, but that also means they have the most extensive options for lodging and dining. Don’t leave the Outer Banks without sampling some of the freshest seafood you can come by, whether you opt for fancy, such as The Blue Point in Duck, or casual, like the Austin Fish Company in Nags Head.

The Northern beaches aren’t entirely developed, however, and a short drive on the beach always has the potential to reward you with sightings of Corolla’s wild horses, believed to be descended from Spanish mustangs that were left behind in the 1500s. If you don’t have an off-road capable vehicle or a permit to drive on the beach, you check out outfitters like Wild Horse Adventure Tours. However it happens, do your best to see these beautiful creatures, which are an iconic part of an Outer Banks experience.

Another worthy excursion: Climbing the tallest sand dune on the east coast at Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nag’s Head. From the top, you’ll enjoy views of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Roanoke Sound (sandboarding is also allowed with a permit). For a more adrenaline-fueled experience, Kitty Hawk Kites, which has been around for 25 years, offers hang gliding lessons on the dune, and you’ll be flying solo by the end of your first lesson.

With your newfound appreciation for flight, head to Kill Devil Hills to see the Wright Brothers National Memorial, commemorating the advent of powered flight. The memorial and attached museum are open every day except Christmas, and adult entry is an affordable $7 (kids 15 and under are free).

Roanoke Island

What Roanoke Island lacks in beaches, it makes up for in history, and its unique, wooded landscape is well worth a day (or longer) trip from some of the beachfront locations. England’s first attempt to colonize the continent in 1585 was unsuccessful, but earthwork remnants from that effort remain visible at the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. Modern-day Roanoke Island also is home to the town of Manteo, with its boutiques, gift shops, and bookstores. In addition, it’s home to the fishing village of Wanchese, which provides much of the seafood for restaurants throughout the Outer Banks, as well as chartered trips into Gulf Stream waters for anglers to try their luck battling big fish such as marlin and tuna.

In spite of the 1963 construction of the Bonner Bridge, Hatteras Island boasts miles of beaches that are relatively empty compared to the ones farther north. The island is home to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, which is the tallest brick lighthouse in the world at 202 feet. For $8, you can experience the spectacular view from the top.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was built to protect ships from the Diamond Shoals, which was the name given to the shifting array of sandbars right along the coast. Over time, so many ships sank here that it earned the area the nickname Graveyard of the Atlantic, and the museum of the same name on Hatteras Island is well worth a visit.

Hatteras also is becoming famous for stargazers, and dark skies experts have named it one of the best spots in the world because of its limited light pollution.

Ocracoke Island

A short ferry ride will take you from the mainland to Ocracoke Island, which feels like a world away. Put even more distance between you and the outside world with an off-road vehicle permit ($50 well-spent for a 10-day pass to get off the beaten path and explore the beaches on the island). Ocracoke is only nine square miles with a population of less than 1,000, but there are plenty of options for accommodations and dining. Don’t be surprised if you end up wanting to turn a day trip into a longer stay—according to various historical accounts, the famous pirate Blackbeard felt the same way. Born Edward Teach but nicknamed Blackbeard because of the ebony color of his beard, he was the most notorious of the many swashbucklers who targeted cargo ships off the island during the 1700s. His legend is still very much alive on Ocracoke—yet another reason for a visit to this enchanting island.

Outer Banks Family Vacation Guide

The Outer Banks travel guide for families

Part 1 of our 3 Part Series: The Outer Banks Family Vacation Guide

Read Part 2 here! (Where to stay at the OBX)

Read Part 3 here! (What to do at the OBX)

Oceanside vacationers will appreciate fabulous views of the Atlantic Ocean, but the beaches in this area are narrow providing only limited space for beach-combing, sand castles and lounging.

Whether staying beach front or “between the highways,” easy access to entertainment and dining options provide something for everyone.

Ocracoke is the southern tip of the Outer Banks, most easily reached from the mainland by ferry which runs year-round (limited in late fall and winter).

What do you think is the best place for an Outer Banks vacation?

The Ultimate 7 Day Outer Banks Itinerary

Explore the stunning OBX shoreline with this 1 week Outer Banks itinerary

The Outer Banks are a series of barrier islands in North Carolina that have recently risen to stardom thanks to the Netflix original series, Outer Banks. Despite what you might have heard, the Outer Banks is more than just a mysterious compass, teenage angst, and John B.

The islands are a natural wonderland that truly embodies the saying, "There's something for everyone." They're 200 miles long and are rarely more than a mile wide. Although usually low lying, some naturally formed sand dunes in the Outer Banks rise to more than 100 feet.

Full of natural beauty and wild adventures, these islands are a family-friendly and budget-friendly destination. There are also several exciting and interesting towns on the Outer Banks of North Carolina to explore.

If you are looking to make the most of a week-long trip to the Outer Banks, this 1 week in Outer Banks itinerary will help you experience the best of what they have to offer!

Currituck & Corolla

Currituck Lighthouse in North Carolina

Your perfect 7-day Outer Banks itinerary starts in the northernmost part of the islands. This is the best way to see all of the Outer Banks without having to backtrack.

The northern parts of the Outer Banks are a bit wilder than the other parts of the islands. This makes the area ideal for nature lovers.

There are several ways to get to the Outer Banks, with most either driving or flying in. Airports close to the Outer Banks include both international and regional ones.

Wild horses in the Outer Banks, NC

See Wild Horses at the Beach

You've probably heard about the wild Spanish mustangs that roam free in the Outer Banks. To see these beauties, you will need to head to the northernmost beaches in Currituck and Corolla.

During the Colonial era, explorers from Spain brought the mustangs with them to explore the area. Now, seeing the descendants of the horses in the wild is a must-see while in the Outer Banks.

You don't need to book a tour to see them for yourself. Typically, people drive on the beaches to get to the horses. For this, a 4-wheel drive will be necessary.

If you don't have a 4-wheel drive and don't want to rent one, you can walk. You will probably have to walk about two miles to reach the horses, but the reward is worth the effort! Before leaving the area, take a swim, hunt for shark's teeth, or go shelling at Corolla Beach.

Historic Corolla Park

End your first day by walking the 220 steps to the top of Currituck Beach Lighthouse for perfect views of the historic Whalehead Club and Currituck Sound. In the late 1800s, the lighthouse's beacon began lighting the way for ships along the North Carolina coast.

The area off of the Outer Banks coast is called the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" due to the number of boats that capsized in the area. A large number of the lost and sunken ships reported in 1872 led to the Currituck Lighthouse being built three years later.

Before leaving, take the short walk across the road to Historic Corolla Park. The park offers a view of the sound, crabbing, fishing, and a gorgeous wooden footbridge.

If you have a kayak or canoe, there is an area where you can launch it from in the park. For photographers or those looking for the perfect Instagram shot, there are a lot of pretty photo opportunities along the water and wooden boardwalks in front of the Whalehead Club.

Kitty Hawk

More infoTripAdvisorGet directions

On your second day in the Outer Banks, head south to Kitty Hawk. You can learn more about the Wright brothers and the way they shaped aviation as we know it today at the Monument to a Century of Flight.

Next, head to Sandy Run Park. It's one of my favorite places in Kitty Hawk because it has wooden boardwalks reaching out over the marshes, and you can always catch sight of turtles, fish, ducks, and other wildlife. This park is popular among locals more than tourists, making it an excellent option for getting away from the crowds.

Before heading south, stop by the Avalon Pier for a relaxing break. Grab a snack and enjoy it on the pier while you watch the surfers and kayakers in the ocean.

Kill Devil Hills

TripAdvisorGet directions

Next, it's time to head south to Kill Devil Hills. Yes, this town has a rather strange name that comes from a type of bird that used to inhabit the area. The Killdeer gave the place the nickname of Killdeer Hills, which became Kill Devil Hills over time.

Kill Devil Hills is famous for being the birthplace of flight, which leads us to the Wright Brothers National Monument. Diving into the area's history is a great way to truly experience and appreciate where you are. You can learn about the Wright brothers and their iconic first flight at the Wright Brothers National Memorial.

Make sure you bring your walking shoes and plenty of water if you visit in the summer months. If you're traveling with kids, this is an excellent stop in the Outer Banks. Children 15 and younger get in for free!

Before you leave town, head to Ocean Bay Blvd for a swim or a walk on the beach. After all, the Outer Banks is famous for its beaches.

Ahead of going to a beach, though, make sure you check the wind speeds. The islands can occasionally be too windy to enjoy the beaches. A quick google search can tell you what the conditions will be like on the beach in Kill Devil Hills.

Nags Head beach and Pier

Nags Head

End your second day with adventure in Nags Head! Nags Head is home to Jockey's Ridge State Park. If you were to ask me what's the #1 thing to see in the Outer Banks, Jockey's Ridge would be neck and neck with seeing the wild horses. Its beauty is unreal!

The state park has the tallest natural sand dune on the East Coast and the perfect conditions for kite flying and hang gliding. You can take your own hang gliding lesson in the park.

If hang gliding isn't your thing, head to the First Flight Adventure Park. They have different aerial obstacle courses for varying levels of difficulty. They each have their own zip line, too!

The best way to end a day in Nags Head is by watching the sunset at Jennette's Pier. It's the oldest fishing pier in the Outer Banks, and without a doubt, the most beautiful.

Roanoke Island

Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, NC

This little barrier island is famous for its "lost colony" of settlers. It is one of the most entertaining and interesting islands in the Outer Banks, and you could easily spend a whole weekend exploring Roanoke Island.

Only 12 miles long and 3 miles wide on average, Roanoke was the first-attempted English settlement in North America. It's also the birthplace of Virginia Dare, the first child born of English parents in the New World.

Day 3 of your Outer Banks trip itinerary will be full of history and interesting educational sites. Make sure to bring your walking shoes, and if you're visiting in the summer, lots of water!

Fort Raleigh Historic Site in the Outer Banks, NC

Fort Raleigh National Historic Site

More infoTripAdvisorGet directions

The Fort Raleigh National Historic Site preserves the location of the Roanoke colony of 1587. The settlement was promoted and financed by Sir Walter Raleigh.

Unfortunately, sometime between 1587 and 1590, supply ships failed to arrive at the colony. When the colony was next visited, the settlement had been abandoned, and no survivors were ever found.

The fate of the "lost colony" has never been solved. This history and the mystery of this settlement draws hundreds of thousands of people to this historic site each year.

While you're here, you can see the "earthwork" that has been left behind. It is archaeological proof that metallurgical activity took place while people lived in Roanoke Colony. You can also walk the 1.25 mile Freedom Trail that leads you to the Croatan Sound.

Before you leave, make sure to stop at the Waterside Theatre. The Roanoke Island Historical Association puts on a drama at the Waterside Theatre about the Lost Colony. The show is a great way to educate yourself about the colony while also supporting the artists in Roanoke.

The Island Farm is a 19th-century farm that has been turned into a living museum. They have employees in period attire explaining what life was like on the farm when it was first established.

Not your typical lighthouse, the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse is a beautiful little lighthouse that you can reach by walking out on a wooden boardwalk over the Bay.

Under the lighthouse is a little museum that you can explore for free. The best part about this lighthouse is its location. There are restaurants, shopping opportunities, and sweet shops, all within walking distance of the lighthouse.

Walk around and see what shops interest you. I recommend stopping by The Laughing Lollipop. They have typical yummy treats, but also some interesting and strange flavored candies as well.

Stop for dinner at one of the restaurants in the area that can be reached on foot. The Lost Colony Brewery and Cafe is one of the best breweries in the Outer Banks, a crowd favorite and has a great outdoor seating area.

Bodie Island Lighthouse

More infoTripAdvisorGet directions

The Bodie Island Lighthouse has had a turbulent history. Initially built in 1847, the Bodie Lighthouse sadly had to be abandoned due to a failing foundation. It was built up again in 1859 with better construction. The lighthouse once again was destroyed in 1861 by Confederate troops to keep it out of Union hands.

Today, the lighthouse wears the classic black and white stripes that we have grown to expect of a lighthouse. You can climb the 214 steps leading up ten stories to the top of the lighthouse to view Pamlico Sound, marshlands, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Watch out for rattlesnakes around the lighthouse. They are native to the area and like to hang out underneath the wooden boardwalks. If you were to see a rattlesnake, simply let it be. If you leave them alone and give them space, they will move on. Just stay on the boardwalk, and you'll be just fine.

There are many places to pull off in the refuge and park your vehicle. You can park along the road to find a perfect beach that fits your needs.

If you visit in the spring, you'll be able to see colorful wildflowers growing along the sand dunes. If you visit in the summer or a month before or after the summer months, you will need to make sure to bring bug spray.

If you choose to climb the lighthouse, keep in mind that it will be hot, humid, and dimly hit. Bring water and make sure you don't wear shoes with much of a heel.

Hatteras Village Park

The entrance to the park may seem small and unassuming, but don't let this fool you. The trails through the park lead through maritime forest and along wooden boardwalks over marshland.

Stay aware. Venomous snakes and mosquitoes call the area around the trails home. I've never seen snakes on the trails myself, but it's something to be aware of. You're in the south and by the water, so bug spray is a must.

Futuro House

Want a unique place to take a picture? End your day by stopping by the Futuro House on Hatteras Island. It's a special roadside attraction that the U.S. is so famous for.

In 1970, Futuro houses were all the rage. A couple bought a piece of land and put one of these novel houses on the land. The house is shaped like a flying saucer and is surrounded by interesting alien and outer space decor.

It's one of the unique things to do in the Outer Banks and makes for a fun and different Instagram photo-op.

Ocracoke Island

When you think of the best beaches in the United States, you probably think of Hawaii or Florida. One of the top-rated beaches in the country, however, is located right on little Ocracoke Island.

So on Day 7, you'll start your morning with a ferry ride to the Island, climb a lighthouse, see wild ponies, and visit the #2 beach in America.

You could easily spend a whole weekend exploring Ocracoke Island as it has one of the most interesting histories of any place I've been.

You will learn many fascinating North Carolina facts and fun Outer Banks facts while you're here because the locals are very friendly and love to share information.

For example, did you know that the famous pirate, Blackbeard, used to hang out around Ocracoke Island a lot? He actually died at the hands of the Spanish off the Island's coast.

Ocracoke Beach

Start your time on Ocracoke Island by spending time on the #2 ranked beach in America. White sands, expansive beach, and driftwood await you.

It's also a popular place for shelling and finding sand dollars. However, you will want to check the wind speeds before you go. Windy days are common and can make the beach unenjoyable.

Not so wild anymore, but still the descendants of the mustangs from Spain that were left on Ocracoke Island many years ago, are still here today. They now enjoy 188 acres of land all to themselves. You can see them up close and personal at the Pony Pen.

Next, stop for a bite to eat at the renowned Howard's Pub. The restaurant is decorated with old license plates and other Americana.

I recommend sitting outside on their porch. It's screened in, so you don't have to worry about those pesky mosquitoes.

What should you get from here? That's easy! Definitely the fried pickles and the fried chicken sandwich.

Ocracoke Lighthouse

Ocracoke Lighthouse

End your day on Ocracoke by seeing the southernmost lighthouse in the Outer Banks. The Ocracoke Lighthouse stands at only 75 feet tall and isn't the typical lighthouse shape. Still, it is the oldest working lighthouse in North Carolina and the second oldest in the whole country!

The lighthouse was actually only used for less than twenty years. Over time, the channel that the lighthouse was providing light for had migrated, making it obsolete.

There are only three parking spots at the lighthouse, but don't worry! People don't stay at the lighthouse for a long time. Just do a quick lap around the block if you need to wait for a spot to open up.

The Best Places to Stay with Kids in the OBX
The Outer Banks offer families a relaxing beach destination with plenty of natural beauty, quaint villages, and delicious seafood. Water sports are also popular in the area such as surfing, kiteboarding, and fishing.

The beaches stay less crowded than other east coast beach destinations, even during the peak summer months. This is mainly due to the lack of hotels in the area. While there are a some hotels, most of the places to stay are beach rental houses and vacation rentals. So if you're looking to spend some time here, the best way to enjoy it is to get a house! Kill Devil Hills

Kill Devil Hills is the largest town in Dare Country with a year-round population of 6,800. It is probably most famous for its role in American aviation. Orville and Wilbur Wright took their first famous flight here. This location's windy environment and soft sand dunes made it the perfect spot for their 120 foot flight, which lasted just 12 seconds. They eventually took four flights in total, which are now memorialized at the Wright Brothers National Memorial. At the top of Big Kill Devil Hill is the monument which you can visit and look out over the now-famous field, and you can also browse through the museum. The hill was originally a large sand dune, much like those found elsewhere in the Outer Banks, particularly in Jockey's Ridge State Park, but today it is protected from the winds by grass that has been planted.

Kill Devil Hills has plenty of hotels, restaurants, and fun activities that a family can enjoy. There's a comedy club, an arcade, a speedway, and a movie theater. There's also plenty of public beach access spots, public bathrooms and changing areas, as well lifeguard stations.

As Kill Devil Hills is one of the most popular destinations in the Outer Banks, there are a number of places to stay. There are plenty of oceanfront and soundside properties for rent, as well as major hotel chains, independently owned inns, and beach condos that you can rent.
