The Philadelphia Union’s offseason rebuild got its first significant addition Monday with the signing of Venezuelan midfielder Jose Andres Martinez.

The 25-year-old arrives from Venezuelan club Zulia FC, to which the Union paid an undisclosed transfer fee. The team did not disclose if allocation money was used in the transaction.

Martinez, nicknamed “El Brujo” or “The Wizard,” has spent four seasons with clubs in his home state. He’s made 122 appearances in domestic competitions, first for Deportivo JBL del Zulia in 2016 and 2017, then the last two years at Zulia FC. He made 65 appearances with two goals and four assists for Zulia in the Venezuelan Primera.

Martinez also helped Zulia win Copa Venezuela in 2018 and advance to the quarterfinals of Copa Sudamericana, the deepest progress by a Venezuelan club since the continental competition was created in 2002.

“He is an up-and-coming player whose tenacity and athleticism will bolster our midfield going forward,” sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a team statement. “We look forward to welcoming him to the team and an exciting 2020 season.”

The 5-9, 152-pound Martinez is listed as a defensive midfielder. He seems an ideal profile to fill the void left by Haris Medunjanin, to whom the Union declined to extend a new contract, leading to FC Cincinnati signing him. Martinez is a more combative player for the No. 6 role, fitting the tactical ethos of the counter-attacking 4-4-2 that Tanner has sought to implement.

With the Union declining to bring back Medunjanin and Marco Fabian and having made no progress in a permanent capture of loanee Jamiro Monteiro, there appear to be three open starting spots in the midfield quartet around right mid Alejandro Bedoya.

Brenden Aaronson is sure to claim a large portion of the minutes at the No. 10, as he did last year in displacing Fabian. But with Aaronson likely to miss time with the U.S. Under-23s as they try to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, a contingency plan is needed. Martinez’s signing helps remedy the hole at the other end of the diamond, as the backline shield for a team looking to reduce the number of goals it concedes (55 in 36 games, including playoffs).

The Union also announced Monday that they will return to Clearwater, Fla, for a sixth straight postseason, but the location of their offseason start in the Philadelphia area has changed.

The Union will begin training camp Jan. 20 at the 76ers Fieldhouse in Wilmington, a departure from years past at either YSC Sports in Wayne or more recently, under the bubble at Dunning-Cohen Champions Field on the campus of Penn.

The Union will train in Wilmington from Jan. 20-25 before two stints in Clearwater that include seven tune-up matches. From Jan. 27-Feb. 6, the club will play a scrimmage at IMG Academy and two at the Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex.

A second phase of training camp from Feb. 11-23 will include another game at IMG, one at Al Lang Stadium in Tampa and two at DiMaggio, including a Feb. 19 game against FC Dallas, the team it will open the regular season against 10 days later. That game is open to the public.

The Philadelphia Union announced the signing Wednesday of midfielder Jose Martinez to a new contract through the 2022 season, with club options for 2023 and 2024.

The 26-year-old Venezuela native, nicknamed “El Brujo” (“The Wizard”), started all 14 games and notched two assists in his first MLS campaign in 2020.

One of his assists came during a 2-0 victory against the New England Revolution in the Nov. 8 regular-season finale, a win that clinched the Supporters’ Shield for the Union.

“Jose’s passion and physicality gives us an extra edge every time he steps on the field,” Union sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a release. “He has proven to be dominant in our midfield, vital in the transition on attack and we are looking forward to seeing his continued development and contributions.”

Martinez had two goals and four assists in 65 appearances from 2018-19 with the Venezuelan club Zulia FC. He has also competed with the Venezuelan national team.

The Faces of AlVelAl: José Andrés Martínez

The story

This beekeeper from Velez produced 100% ecological honey, taking care that every detail of production is done traditionally.

José Andrés Martínez is a young beekeeper who produces 100% ecological honey. As the son and grandson of farmers, he joined the agricultural sector in 2017, and decided to start beekeeping because you can make a distinctive product. José recognises that “producing “ecological” goods can limit you in many things, but the advantage is that the honey is of higher quality, there is almost no comparison”.

In his beehives, José recycles and reuses combs by making them from the wax of his own hives once thesehave finished their life cycle. And as “A natural honey”, 80% of the pollination happens in the heart of the Sierra María-Los Vélez Natural Park. The whole process is based on artisanal practices and José hopes that in the future he will be able to market directly to consumers.

José found out about AlVelAl through the courses on Incorporation into Agriculture for Young Farmers, and after seeing several reports and reading about the project he was encouraged to become a member. “I think that AlVelAl is on a better path than super-intensive agriculture, because in the Altiplano there is no capacity jose andres martinez such practices and in our region the ground is very uneven and, if you are constantly ploughing, you lose all the soil and the almond trees become unearthed, many already have their roots exposed. I like the idea of returning to how our ancestors farmed. They were more intelligent than we are.”

He finds other AlVelAl projects interesting, such as the restoration of natural areas in La Muela, AlVelAl 8000 or the construction of swales for harvesting water. “What we are missing is for people to become aware, there are many people who are obsessed with making the ground look clean, but pollinators cannot live in such places”. Another thing that attracts his attention is the pistachio, which he would like to work on in a regenerative way if he has his own farm tomorrow.

For José Andrés, AlVelAl’s approach “should be the future of the territory, with almost everything focused on that philosophy. Because at jose andres martinez end of the day you are making a long-term investment, you invest in taking care of the soil, the landscape, the fact that there are trees, habitat… and you begin forming an ecosystem which has been lost. And if you start with the younger generations, tomorrow there will be more awareness”.

In 20 years’ time, José would like AlVelAl’d approach to be better known and he would like to see more farms like there used to be. “Regarding pollination, our ancestors were smarter than us because they planted many varieties of almond trees. It would be great to transfer that idea to today’s agriculture”. The good thing, he continues, “would be for people and especially the youth to become more aware”, “This is quality of life”.
