It's excellent, packed with technology

I have done a review of the chase app over a year ago and had a lot to gripe about. I hated the fact that you had to accept quickpays. I also hated the fact that you needed to login to conduct transactions after you used your finger print to get into your app. Both of these annoyances have been fixed with this update. I absolutely love the way chase deducts the money for Bill pays right on the spot. It makes your balances so much easier to manage. I love the freshness and the high-tech feel of the app. One area for improvement would be to allow a direct dialed phone call to a representative right from the app having already completed the authentication process. Also, allow the app to show images of all transactions, including deposits just like BOA does. Other than those 2, the app is perfect.
Update. I also love managing my brokerage account right through the app with the ability to move money quickly between my brokerage and checking account. This app is really the best of the best in the banking world.

Mortgage experience and mobile experience stink

I was a chase credit card customer and the app was always fine for what I needed. We’re currently going through the home loan process and your app is embarrassingly terrible. I can’t believe such a large bank has an app that can’t render on an iPhone. For two or three weeks we had someone listed in the app as part of our loan team and it wasn’t the correct rep. We kept reaching out to him with no response, come to find out that we got put with a different rep but the app doesn’t update that detail into the loan moves into a new status. What?! The screens are all tiny and you can’t zoom in!! You can’t download the documents from your phone either. You also can’t go into the mortgage portal and open a document and try to go back and do something. The app signs you out instantly. The reps even mentioned how terrible it was. Anytime I use the app to look for tasks I have to close the app and re log in multiple times. The message your team function is completely useless. Our rep told us she doesn’t get a notice when we message through that method and to email her instead. Why the heck even put it there?! We also have been asked repeatedly to upload the same information over and over. According to the rep, they have tons of issues seeing our documents and they get “lost”. How reassuring. It’s only the biggest purchase I’ve ever made and all of my personal information. Y’all need to fix these issues. This app is bad.

Terrible Customer Service and App

First of all I rarely leave negative reviews, if my experience is less than satisfactory I will simply choose to leave no review rather than a negative one. That said the Chase bank as well as their app left me little choice. Let’s start with the app. For weeks I could not even use it because every time I tried signing in it would crash forcing me to use a cumbersome web browser for my mobile banking. Once the app started working (about a month and several updates later) I found it to have way less features and to be much less organized than any other banking app I have used. This alone was disappointing however their customer service is even worse which I find quite disturbing for an organization that handles ones finances. They seem to know very little of what they are doing as they misplaced several important documents that I had faxed them directly from a bank branch claiming they had not received them forcing me to spend hours sending them though several different formats. After this I call back only talk to a different representative to find out they had received the fax a week ago when I had sent it originally. This alone was very frustrating but to make it worse customer service was very unfriendly and unhelpful which I found quite unprofessional for a banking institution. Sadly from my experience I would not recommend this app nor chase bank itself. Sorry

Chase has a stellar eCommerce and mobile team in both their retail and cards organization, and they are poised to deliver tremendous payment innovation across both of these business units. This innovation has been “in the works” over the last few years, and Jack Stephenson (PayPal’s former head of strategy) is fortunate to have  joined at a time where both the payment platform and team is gaining traction. This month the JPM retail team has delivered new capability in its iPhone versions of QuickPay and Quick Deposit products.

QuickPay Overview:

QuickPay is a JPM’s money movement “pay anyone” service that provides registration for both Chase and non Chase customers. Chase was very late to the money movement game, rolling out its first QuickPay service in 2008 (whereas Bank of America and Citi have been providing this since 2002  through CashEdge). From a strategy and organizational perspective, JPM is well known for their “preference” to develop applications internally. It may have taken some time for JPM to complete the QuickPay internal build, but in the current release it has surpassed the domestic capability (and usability) of all other banks. JPM is now the leader in retail online payments.

Non-Chase customers can register for QuickPay before or after receiving funds. For non customers, registration for QuickPay is similar to PayPal (or CashEdge’s PopMoney), with the QuickPay wallet currently constrained to single linked checking account. Chase customers have a streamlined enrollment process and the QuickPay functionality is integrated into their existing online experience (demo above). This differs substantially from BAC, where the same capability to transfer funds exists but the usability is very poor. BAC is missing a substantial opportunity to capture beneficiary phone/e-mail information, an unnecessary miss since the capability exists (BAC is Cashedge’s largest US customer but has not yet signed on with CashEdge’s mobile POP money service).  Beneficiary information is critical to maintaining an accurate directory.. the key element in any payment system. Chase’s QuickPay maintains e-mail, phone and other information which gives it a head start in the directory battle (subject of future blog).  Given Chase Paymentech’s role in acquisition (for card, paypal, …) you can see potential for further directory synergies internally.

The articles above provide a great overview of the new iPhone App, with Chase following in the footsteps of USAA’s [email protected] Application is from Mitek Systems and it is just super, and for small merchants this may become the payment method of choice (when compared to card):

The JPM Quick Deposit application was reportedly built in-house, other Vendors such as EasCorp’s Depozip provide similar functionality. As for the success of this application, NetBanker reported USAA’s recent numbers for [email protected] (update 20 Aug, my friends at BAC tell me that they have been trialing the Mitek application for almost 3 years now, fine tuning the app and the support process and are set for launch any day) .

Given that the audience for this blog (investors, start ups and innovators), you might ask why it takes 2 years for a bank to roll out this type of innovation. An excellent question! The iPhone app itself is the easy part, perhaps consisting of less then 20% of the overall budget. The “hard work” is in integrating it into existing systems and risk controls. For example, the primary value proposition, for QuickDeposit, is improving check acceptance and funds availability. At the teller line, banks have tools like DepositChek which allows the bank to determine if information on the check is correct and the account is in good standing (stopping check fraud before the check image gets into the system). These same tools must be integrated into the online and mobile process to reduce risk. I’ve picked this particular example because it is a tool unique to bank entities (not available to non-banks). In addition to the technical integration costs, banks have become very prudent in testing, and accessing impact of new functionality to call center support costs. Given the wide availability of both of these applications, it is essential that they are intuitive to JPM customers.

These applications are a great retail success. I understand that the JPM cards team is also poised for a major release in mobile soon (with multiple alliance partners). Well done JPM!

To send money using Zelle®, simply select someone from your mobile device’s contacts (or add a trusted recipient’s email address or U.S. mobile phone number), add the amount you’d like to send and an optional note, review, then hit Send. If someone sends money to an email address or U.S. mobile number you have not yet enrolled with Zelle®, follow these steps:

  1. Follow the link provided in the payment notification you received via email or text message.
  2. Select U.S. Bank.
  3. Follow the instructions provided on the page to enroll and receive your payment. Pay attention to the email address or U.S. mobile number where you received the payment notification – you should enroll with Zelle® using that email address or U.S. mobile number to ensure you receive your money.

When you go to Zelle®in the U.S. Bank Mobile App, you'll see a prompt asking you to allow access to your contact list. If you agree, Zelle® will cross-reference that information against their records to identify email addresses and U.S. mobile numbers that are already enrolled with Zelle®.

If your recipient’s bank isn’t on the list, don’t worry. The list of participating financial institutions is always growing, and your recipient can still use Zelle® by downloading the Zelle® app for Android and iOS.

To enroll with theZelle® app, your recipient will enter their basic contact information, an email address and U.S. mobile number, and a Visa® or Mastercard® debit card with a U.S.-based account (does not include U.S. territories). Zelle® does not accept debit cards associated with international deposit accounts or any credit cards.

When you enroll with Zelle® through the U.S. Bank Mobile App or online banking, your name, the name of your bank, and the email address or U.S. mobile number you enrolled are shared with Zelle® (no sensitive account details are shared – those stay with us). When someone sends money to your enrolled email address or U.S. mobile number, Zelle® looks up the email address or mobile number in its “directory” and notifies us of the incoming payment. We then direct the payment into your bank account, all while keeping your sensitive account details private.

In order to use Zelle®, the sender and recipient’s bank accounts must be based in the U.S.

You can only cancel a payment if the person you sent money to hasn’t yet enrolled with Zelle®. To check whether the payment is still pending because the recipient hasn’t yet enrolled, you can go to your Zelle® Activity page, choose the pending payment you want to cancel, and then select Cancel Payment.

If the person you sent money to has already enrolled with Zelle®, the money is sent directly to their bank account and cannot be canceled. This is why it’s important to only send money to people you trust, and always ensure you’ve used the correct email address or U.S. mobile number when sending money. 

If you sent money to the wrong person, we recommend contacting the recipient and requesting the money back. If the recipient refuses to comply, you can file a dispute by calling U.S. Bank24-Hour Banking at 800-USBANKS(872-2657). However, it's up to the recipient's financial institution to decide whether to refund your money.

Money sent with Zelle® is typically available to an enrolled recipient within minutes.2

If you send money to someone who isn’t enrolled with Zelle®, they will receive a notification prompting them to enroll. After enrollment, the money will move directly to your recipient’s account, typically within minutes.2

If your payment is pending, we recommend confirming that the person you sent money to has enrolled with Zelle® and that you entered the correct email address or U.S. mobile phone number.

If you’re waiting to receive money, you should check to see if you’ve received a payment notification via email or text message. If you haven’t received a payment notification, we recommend following up with the sender to confirm they entered the correct email address or U.S. mobile phone number.

Chase has a stellar eCommerce and mobile team in both their retail and cards organization, and they are poised to deliver tremendous payment innovation across both of these business units. This innovation has been “in the works” over the last few years, and Jack Stephenson (PayPal’s former head of strategy) is fortunate to have  joined at a time where both the payment platform and team is gaining traction. This month the JPM retail team has delivered new capability in its iPhone versions of QuickPay and Quick Deposit products.

QuickPay Overview:

QuickPay is a JPM’s money movement “pay anyone” service that provides registration for both Chase and non Chase customers. Chase was very late to the money movement game, rolling out its first QuickPay service in 2008 (whereas Bank of America and Citi have been providing this since 2002  through CashEdge). From a strategy and organizational perspective, JPM is well known for their “preference” to develop applications internally. It may have taken some time for JPM to complete the QuickPay internal build, but in the current release it has surpassed the domestic capability (and usability) of all other banks. JPM is now the leader in retail online payments.

Non-Chase customers can register for QuickPay before or after receiving funds. For non customers, registration for QuickPay is similar to PayPal (or CashEdge’s PopMoney), with the QuickPay wallet currently constrained to single linked checking account. Chase customers have a streamlined enrollment process and the QuickPay functionality is integrated into their existing online experience (demo above). This differs substantially from BAC, where the same capability to transfer funds exists but the usability is very poor. BAC is missing a substantial opportunity to capture beneficiary phone/e-mail information, an unnecessary miss since the capability exists (BAC is Cashedge’s largest US customer but has not yet signed on with CashEdge’s mobile POP money service).  Beneficiary information is critical to maintaining an accurate directory. the key element in any payment system. Chase’s QuickPay maintains e-mail, americas got talent season 14 episode 25 and other information which gives it a head start in the directory battle (subject of future blog).  Given Chase Paymentech’s role in acquisition (for card, paypal, …) you can see potential for further directory synergies internally.

The articles above provide a great overview of the new iPhone App, with Chase following in the footsteps of USAA’s [email protected] Application is from Mitek Systems and it is just super, and for small merchants this may become the payment method of choice (when compared to card):

The JPM Quick Deposit application was reportedly built in-house, other Vendors such as EasCorp’s Depozip provide similar functionality. As for the success of this application, NetBanker reported USAA’s recent numbers for [email protected] (update 20 Aug, my friends at BAC tell me that they have been trialing the Mitek application for almost 3 years now, fine tuning the app and the support process and are set for launch any day) .

Given that the audience for this blog (investors, start ups and innovators), you might ask why it takes 2 years for a bank to roll out this type of innovation. An excellent question! The iPhone app itself is the easy part, perhaps consisting of less then 20% of the overall budget. The “hard work” is in integrating it into existing systems and risk controls. For example, the primary value proposition, for QuickDeposit, is improving check acceptance and funds availability. At the teller line, banks have tools like DepositChek which allows the bank to determine if information on the check is correct and the account is in good standing (stopping check fraud before the check image gets into the system). These same tools must be integrated into the online and mobile process to reduce risk. I’ve picked this particular example because it is a tool unique to bank entities (not available to non-banks). In addition to the technical integration costs, banks have become very prudent in testing, and accessing impact of new functionality to call center support costs. Given the wide availability of both of these applications, it is essential that they are intuitive to JPM customers.

These applications are a great retail success. I understand that the JPM cards team is also poised for a major release in mobile soon (with multiple alliance partners). Well done JPM!

What is phishing?

Phishing (pronounced "fishing") is a type of criminal activity that uses fraudulent techniques to trick you into providing sensitive information. An attacker might send an email that appears to be from a reputable company you do business with, such as your bank. The email asks you to reply to the email or go to a website that looks like your bank's site and then give your user name, password, account number, personal identification number (PIN), Social Security number or other personal information.

Scammers might also contact you by text message or by phone. For example, you could get a text message from a phone number you don't recognize that says your bank account will be closed, frozen or terminated unless you call a phone number or go to a website listed in the message and then give your personal and account information.

If you have any doubts about whether an email, phone call or text message is actually from us, please call the toll-free number on the back of your credit/debit card or the toll-free number on your statement. We'll help figure out if you're dealing with a scam.

Don't reply to an email, phone call or text message that does these things:

What do fraudulent email messages look like?

Phony emails take many forms, but they tend to have a harsh, demanding or scary tone. See examples some customers have received.

What should I do if I'm suspicious of an email with a Chase logo?

If you suspect the email is phony, don't reply to it or do anything it tells you to do. You can forward a suspicious email message to us at [email protected] We'll send you an automated response to let you know we got the message.

How do the criminals doing the phishing know I have an account with you?

At its investor day, JPMorgan Chase announced that Chase QuickPay, its proprietary peer-to-peer (P2P) payments offering, saw 94 million transactions worth $28 billion in 2016.

For context, that marks a 38% increase from the $21 billion that the firm processed last year.

In general, that’s strong performance, especially considering that just 25% of US adults have made a mobile P2P payment. But it’s worth paying attention to third-party competitors, like Venmo, which are starting to creep up on QuickPay.

  • QuickPay texas food gifts dwarfed Venmo’s volume, but that’s no longer the case. In 2015, Venmo’s volume of $7.5 billion was just over a third of QuickPay’s total. But Venmo is growing fast — the platform processed $17.6 billion in 2016, marking a remarkable 135% growth and significantly shrinking the gap between it and QuickPay.
  • That’s particularly notable considering Venmo’s limited use cases. Venmo hasn’t disclosed customer totals, but its user base is likely smaller than Chase’s 26.5 million mobile banking users plus its online banking customer pool. In addition, though both Venmo and QuickPay offer both online and mobile transfer options, Venmo is used predominantly on mobile devices only, which means online functionality may not be a substantial volume add for P2P firms. 

That leaves a clear incentive for banks to catch up. For banks, capturing a share of rising mobile P2P payments matters. That’s because chase quickpay team mobile banking is a key engagement tactic for these players, since mobile banking users have considerably lower rates of attrition and tend to consume more banking products on average than other customers. That’s critical, because P2P platforms thrive on network effect, and simplifying interbank transfer broadens that network by bringing more potential users into the fold. That might make banking apps' convenience more appealing than a third-party player. As Zelle goes live on more providers’ platforms, it will be critical to see if it can pull users from its eligible base, whether that’s in the form of converting existing third-party customers or bringing a new group to P2P payments. 

Peer-to-peer (P2P) payments, defined as informal payments made from one person to another, have long been a prominent feature of the payments industry.

Cash and checks have historically dominated the P2P ecosystem, and they’re still a popular tool. That could mean moving P2P functionality into more profitable environments, leveraging existing networks of friends to encourage spending, or offering value-added services at a nominal fee.

But rather than having a large network, it’s becoming important for firms to understand their user bases and the networks within them. This means that chat apps, and leveraging bot and AI technology, may offer a distinct advantage.
