St. Joseph Food Pantry (SJFP)

The St. Joseph Food Pantry began in late 2006 providing food for needy families in Oktibbeha County. Qualifying families can obtain bags of nonperishable goods once a month. Typically, we serve over 180 families (patrons) per month. Counting the people in these families, we help feed over 4,000 people in 2018. Some patrons are homebound and our volunteers spend their own time and money delivering food to approximately 40 families each month. In addition to food, patrons and their children have access during our food distribution to new and used books and magazines provided by donors.

We are able to help feed the needy of Oktibbeha County through partnerships and local volunteers. About half of our food comes from our partnership with the Mississippi Food Network in Jackson, MS. They distribute USDA surplus foods and donated foods from private companies throughout the state. These foods are provided at little or no to us. Our parish congregation, Knights of Columbus, Ladies Auxiliary, Annunciation Catholic School, along with several local businesses, civic, youth and university organizations, as well as United Way of North MS sponsor food drives and other activities that help us fill and distribute food bags.

Hours: Tuesday and Wednesday 9-11:50 and Saturday 10:30-11:50

Proof of Dover residency is required. The entrance to the pantry is at the back of St. Joseph Church in the garage.

Our Daily Bread Food Pantry is serviced by a committed group of compassionate and self-sacrificing volunteers who provide the ministry sharing the love of God by feeding the hungry.

Open three days a week, and located at the St Joseph Church Campus, volunteers provide for the distribution of foods that are primarily the gift and donation of the members of the Parish of the Assumption.  Each month, brown bag Sunday results in an overwhelming contribution of food and basic life supplies that serve those who are for a time having difficulty making ends meet.  At Our Daily Bread Food Pantry, we serve our brothers and sisters by not only filing their stomachs but helping them survive.

St. Joseph

With careful daily management by volunteers, we keep a steady stream of food coming through the pantry, made available from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily.  Food is properly cooled and stored, and removed before expiration for food safety, although most food is taken before it reaches expiration, meaning minimal loss to waste.  Food scraps from meal preparation are sent via Care and Share Food Closet to Martin Woods Farm in Starks, where they are used for animal food.

We make it a point to be available until 6:00 p.m. to accommodate those who work or attend school during the day and need food as they return home.  Although this was born out of the pandemic as a temporary measure, we are in the process of expanding this pantry to a permanent location within the building, given the demonstrated need and encouraging community support received for this project.  We expect to have the pantry fully moved by the end of February.

In the spring and summer of 2021, the Nutrition Center plans to host educational and communal events at the Center.  We view nutrition in a holistic manner, and understand that passing on skills can be a transformative change in one's journey toward food security.  These events will aim to teach new cooking skills and techniques, create community opportunities for canning and preserving, teach principles of food budgeting, Farm-to-Table suppers, and other food related community-building events.  Our Parish Garden located at Saint Rose in Jay will provide an additional venue for educational and volunteer activities around growing food, and will be able to supply fresh garden produce to the Center in summer and fall months.

St. Joseph Parish is proud to be the fiscal sponsor of the Greater Franklin Food Council, an organization that works to enhance local food systems, combat food insecurity, and support local farmers.  Our partnership with the GFFC aligns with our mission of feeding the hungry in Franklin County, by coming together as a community to address food security problems at their roots.  The GFFC created and staffed a successful school garden program which teaches children in Franklin County about food and where it comes from in a hands-on way.  We are excited to collaborate with the GFFC as we offer educational events at the Center.

We welcome and encourage community volunteers to help us in this work.  The Nutrition Center is made possible by generous volunteers, with support from Narrow Gauge Cinema, Franklin Savings Bank, Univeristy Credit Union, Care and Share Food Closet and Clearwater Food Pantry.   For volunteer information, or to make a donation, please call Stephanie Crowe at 897-2173 ext. 1203 or email at [email protected]

Dear Friends of the St. Joseph Food Pantry,

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) has sponsored a food drive for several years. The St Joseph Food Pantry has depended on the donation of food from this drive, often totaling several hundred thousand pounds of food, to help feed the hungry in Manatee County.

In st joseph food pantry the food drive was cancelled due to the pandemic. As a result the Food Pantry had to purchase food, which would not ordinarily have been necessary.  This year again there will be no pick up of food donations from mailboxes.  However, the NALC is sponsoring an online donation drive to raise funds for the participating food pantries, including St Joseph's.

You are encouraged to make a donation online by going directly to nalc.org/food, use the dropdown menu to find FLORIDA, and go to the bottom portion of the list to find "St Joseph Catholic Church Food Pantry."

If you prefer, donations st joseph food pantry always be sent directly to the Food Pantry through the Parish Office or by donating online to the Food Pantry.

We look forward to a successful Letter Carriers' Donor Drive and appreciate your past and current support for the Food Pantry in its mission to feed the hungry of Manatee County.
