As Prime Day has officially started now, Prime cell phone deals are now here. Currently, Best Buy has a cool Samsung Galaxy phones sale, and OnePlus is offering generous discount on the OnePlus 8 series. iPhone deals are a bit scarce right now, but some models have good discounts as well.

What to Expect for Amazon Prime Day 2021

It's official—the seventh annual Amazon Prime Day will again be a two-day affair, kicking off at 3 a.m. ET (12 a.m. PT) June 21 and ending 48 hours later.

Amazon is promising more than 2 million deals this year, covering almost every category. Some of these offers are already available, and more will come in the days leading up to the sale. Consumer Reports will be tracking all the deals from now through the big event to help you find the best offers on the best products.

“Prime Day is a celebration of our Prime members, and we’re excited to bring members great deals across an incredible selection, whether members want to shop and save on top brands, buzzworthy items, or small business collections,” said Jamil Ghani, vice president of Amazon Prime.

Here’s everything else you need to know.

The sale, which includes deals on products of all kinds throughout the site, is open exclusively to Amazon Prime members. You can sign up for a free 30-day trial to take advantage of deals and cancel before the trial period ends if you don’t want to pay for a membership.

Every year, the most heavily promoted deals tend to be on Amazon’s own lineup of devices, including Echo smart speakers, Fire tablets, and Kindle e-readers. There are also special deals on Prime services like Prime Video, Audible, and Amazon Music, typically reserved for first-time subscribers.

These offers have almost always started well ahead of the actual sale, and this year is no different. Amazon already announced early Prime Day deals and promotions that will run in the weeks leading up to the two-day sale, mainly on the brand’s Echo and Fire TV products. There are also early discounts in other categories, including fashion, home improvement, electronics, and grocery, among others. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to access these deals unless you’re logged in as a Prime member.

You can start shopping many of these deals now, but others won’t be live until June 13. Here are a few early sales that are already available.

This 43-inch 4K smart TV from Insignia—Best Buy’s house brand—does a nice job overall for both HD and 4K picture quality, but like many less expensive TVs, it can’t get bright enough to deliver a compelling HDR (high dynamic range) experience. Like the Toshiba set below, it has Amazon’s Fire TV smart streaming service—and its Alexa voice-enabled digital assistant—built into the set. It originally cost $320.

Another of Amazon's early Prime Day deals for Prime members, this Toshiba Fire TV is a decent, if unexceptional, 720p model that offers very good overall high-def picture quality. Plus it has Amazon’s Fire TV smart streaming service—and its Alexa voice-enabled digital assistant—built into the set. It usually costs $200.

Amazon Music: First-time subscribers to Amazon’s music streaming service can get the first four months free—the best deal we’ve ever seen for this service. And if you are going to buy an Amazon Echo device, you can get six months free.

“Spend $10, Get $10”: This deal is aimed at promoting small businesses that sell through Amazon, and the company claims that more than 300,000 merchants are taking part this year. If you buy at least $10 of goods from a small business seller between June 7 and June 20, Amazon will give you a $10 credit to use on Prime Day. This includes select merchandise from Amazon Handmade and Amazon Launchpad.

Amazon is also promising early discounts on toys, small kitchen appliances, home décor, pet products, power tools, headphones, and everyday essentials. And that’s all before Prime Day even begins.

In previous years, we’ve seen price drops on popular items like Instant Pots, robotic vacuums, smartwatches, and even mattresses. There will also be deals and discounts at Amazon’s walk-in stores, including Whole Foods, Amazon Go, Amazon Books, and Amazon Pop Up.

As with past Prime Day events, not all discounts are guaranteed to be available for the duration of the sale. Lightning Deals will have countdown clocks, encouraging shoppers to buy quickly rather than miss the deal. Others may end without warning if items go out of stock. Consumer Reports’ product experts will be tracking all the deals on Prime Day and sharing the best offers on top-tested products.

Ever since the first year of Prime Day, other retailers have held their own sales around the same time. So far, only Target and Walmart have announced competing sales this year, but we expect others, such as Best Buy, to follow suit in the coming days and weeks.

Target’s Deal Days event will start a day earlier than Prime Day, running from June 20 to June 22. And Walmart is adding another day to that—its sale will start June 20 and end June 23. Both retailers are promising prices on a par with what you’d expect for Black Friday. So you’ll be able to compare prices at these and other retailers to make sure you’re getting the best deal no matter where you choose to shop.

Prior to 2020, other retailers would hold sales to compete with Prime Day collectively, which became known as Black Friday in July. It’s still unclear whether these will continue as scheduled or be rescheduled to align with the earlier Prime Day schedule.

If you’re not already a Prime member, you’ll need to sign up for the free trial before the sale begins. This is the only way you can see most Prime Day prices. And you can easily spot the special savings by the blue badges labeling them as Prime Day deals. (Check the Amazon policy on free trial memberships.)

Lightning Deals, as the name implies, are limited-time discounts. They last anywhere from 4 to 24 hours. Amazon also limits the number of available items in a Lightning Deal, so if something is 100 percent claimed, you can join the waitlist and you’ll be notified if someone abandons their cart. Other discounts might not be as transparent in how long they’ll be available or even how good the deal is.

When the event is live, Consumer Reports will be comparing sale prices on tested products with each product’s typical cost to help you avoid overspending or buying something that doesn’t work as well as you want. History of Amazon Prime Day

The first Prime Day was a relatively small affair compared to the behemoth it has become. Back in 2015, just 9 countries were included in Prime Day and more than 34.4 million items were ordered during the 24-hour period — amounting to 398 items per second. Hundreds of thousands of deeply discounted Amazon devices — such as the Kindle, Echo, and Fire streaming devices — were sold as were more than 24,000 Instant Pot 7-in-1 programmable pressure cookers. But that was just to name a few, Amazon sellers using the company’s Fulfillment by Amazon program saw a 300% increase in sales that first year indicating huge deals on nearly everything Amazon sells. 

Last year, 17 countries participated in the event and the tally was more than 100 million items ordered or more than 771 items per second of the 36-hour event. That year, the Fire TV Stick and the Echo Dot were the biggest sellers among Amazon products. Customers ordered more than 5 million toys, beauty products, PCs and accessories, apparel, and kitchen products. Millions of dollars were saved at the newly acquired Whole Foods as part of the Prime Day deals and more than 300,000 Instant Pots were sold. What’s more, small and medium businesses clocked more than $1.5 billion in sales.

Historically, Amazon Prime Day takes place in the middle of July with the dates generally hovering around the 15th or 16th but occasionally occurring as early as July 11. Amazon Prime Day 2020 will take place over the course of two days beginning at 12:01am PDT on July 13 and culminating 48 hours later.

No category on the site is left behind; the sale covers products across all categories, including technology, home, fashion, and more. Home goods were widely popular last Amazon Prime Day, with some of the best-selling items being Instant Pots and wireless, robot vacuums.

Amazon Prime Day was first introduced in 2015, partly to celebrate the site’s 20th anniversary. The main intention was to create one of the biggest sale events of the year, possibly beating out Black Friday.

It’s worth noting the company has seen some turmoil surrounding the event. In 2019, employees at Amazon’s warehouses planned walkouts during the sale in July. The warehouses’ unstable workplace environment, as well as demanding workload, have been the subject of scrutiny for many years.

Out of respect for those displaced from their jobs, and to acknowledge the social and economic instability caused by COVID-19, Amazon decided to delay the two day sale. This year’s decision to hold the sale in June is leaving consumers wondering if this month will become the new norm for the event.

What are “Lightning Deals?”

Not only does the site offer considerable deals during the whole 48-hour period, but if you’re quick enough, you may spot a Lightning Deal. Lightning Deals are pop-up sales that are available for a very limited time — usually only two to six hours sporadically throughout Amazon Prime Day.

How much does a Prime membership cost?

A Prime membership costs users $13/month, or $119/year. Amazon Prime Day 2021 is coming soon. Here are some inside tips on how to get the best bargains in this year’s big summer Amazon sale.

The dates for Amazon Prime Day have been confirmed as 21 and 22 June 2021.

The two-day sale event is returning to its usual summer spot this year after being delayed until October in 2020 due to Covid-19. However, in previous years it tended to fall in July and, according to Tech Radar, this year’s June dates will be the earliest the event has ever taken place.

So what do you need to know before splurging your cash? Read on for expert tips on getting the best price, as well as how to spot fake reviews and whether the Amazon’s Choice badge actually means a product’s any good.

1. What and when is Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day is an annual sales event, which will take place this year on 21-22 June. Deals go live at midnight and popular products are likely to sell out before the end of the 48-hour period.

Prime Day is only available to members of Amazon Prime, which costs £7.99 per month. New members get a 30-day free trial, which you might consider worth it to bag a bargain – just don’t forget to cancel if you don’t want to continue.

If you’re tempted, you can find out more at Amazon.com, but watch out if you don’t want to join: we’ve found many Amazon customers have accidentally signed up to Prime without intending to do so.

Amazon Alexa users will reportedly be offered early access to some deals.

2. What products should I look for on Amazon Prime Day?

Our experts spent Amazon Prime Day 2020 analysing dozens of deals and found some were much better than others.

There were genuine bargains to be had on selected headphones, smartwatches and, perhaps unsurprisingly, Amazon-branded devices such as the Echo Show 5.

But positive reviews can also be bought, with sellers paying genuine people for a good review by giving them the product for free or promising gift cards to fund their next purchase. And these aren’t the only ways fraudsters can exploit online reviews.

Which? has conducted numerous investigations into fake reviews on Amazon, as well as other online marketplaces, exposing the multitude of tricks sellers use to artificially promote their products. Don’t get caught out by misleading or fake customer reviews. Top tips to help you avoid getting stung include:

  • Read the comments: do they seem genuine? Does the language seem natural? Are specific details about the product mentioned?
  • Check the dates: if a large number of reviews were posted at the same time, this can be a red flag.
  • Look at the reviewer: see what else they have bought – do these seem like plausible purchases, or could they be being paid or incentivised to review products?

5. Grab a bargain by setting up price alerts

Got your eye on a particular item but wondering if Amazon Prime Day is really the right time to buy?

You can compare the prices of items online using websites such as CamelCamelCamel (for Amazon only), and Google Shopping, Kelkoo, PriceRunner, and PriceSpy among others.

These can help you track prices of items you’re interested in. Some send you an alert when the price drops and have price history charts.

6. What does Amazon’s Choice actually mean?

Amazon doesn’t fully explain how its ‘Amazon’s Choice’ badge is awarded – but we know it’s an algorithm that uses both ratings and price.

Many shoppers view the Amazon’s Choice badge as a mark of quality, but our exclusive Amazon’s Choice investigation last year showed Amazon’s Choice recommending potentially poor-quality products that appeared to have been artificially boosted by incentivised and fake reviews. Which? believes the system is easily gamed by unscrupulous sellers.

Our top tip? Don’t just rely on the Amazon’s Choice badge. Read the reviews yourself, compare prices and look at delivery times, then you’ll be much more likely to make a good purchase.

7. Look for price fluctuations

A year-long Which? price-tracking investigation found Amazon adjusted its prices much more frequently than any of the other big-name retailers we checked.

We tracked the prices of 32 of the most popular makes and models of home and tech appliances across five of the biggest retailers: Amazon, AO.com, Argos, Currys PC World and John Lewis. We found that Amazon adjusted its prices much more frequently than any of the other retailers we looked at.

But it also offered the lowest prices more often than other retailers for the products in our investigation. In fact, it was the most competitive on pricing across multiple categories, including cameras, fitness trackers, kettles, electric toothbrushes and TVs. So if you’re in the market for a big-ticket item, it might be worth watching the price over a few weeks to see whether it changes.

8. Know who you’re buying from 

When shopping with online marketplaces such as Amazon, it’s important to know whether you’re buying directly from the retailer (in this case Amazon) or a third-party seller, as this can affect your rights.

The product page lists who the item is sold by. If it’s a third-party seller, the order can either be fulfilled by Amazon or not; again this should be clear on the listing.

If you are buying from Amazon directly, or if the order is from a third-party seller but fulfilled by Amazon, then Amazon handles delivery, customer service and returns. If you’re buying from a third-party seller which is fulfilling the order itself then delivery, customer service and returns are handled by the seller, rather than by Amazon.

The good news is that these purchases are covered by Amazon’s A-Z Guarantee, which means there is extra support from Amazon if something goes wrong.

9. How is Amazon Prime Day different from Black Friday?

Black Friday and Amazon Prime Day are now big days in the shopping calendar.

Amazon Prime Day usually runs across two days and is only available to members of Amazon Prime.

Black Friday (which nearly all big retailers take part in) is officially on Friday 26 November this year, but retailers often release deals several weeks before the day itself.

Big sales days such as these can offer great bargains. But, with Black Friday in particular, our research shows that the deals aren’t always as good as they seem.

10. What is commingling and why is it important?

You’ve probably never heard of the term ‘commingling’, but if you shop with Amazon it might well have affected your purchases.

Commingling is the term used to describe a practice used by Amazon to help ensure speedy deliveries. It means that when a customer buys a product from a particular marketplace seller, sometimes Amazon sends the same product to you but from a different seller. These sellers essentially share their stock, and it helps them keep deliveries fast and efficient.

Critics, however, have warned it increases the risk of counterfeit products ending up in consumers’ hands.

11. Watch out for dangerous products 

Not everyone realises online marketplaces such as Amazon aren’t responsible for the safety of the products sold through their sites.

In May 2021, a Which? investigation found 21 of the 36 teeth whiteners available on online marketplaces exceeded the legal amount of hydrogen peroxide permitted for home use, including five out of 13 products available on Amazon Marketplace, when we tested them in our labs. 

And last year, Which? worked with five other European consumer associations to investigate 250 products bought from online marketplaces such as AliExpress, Amazon, eBay and Wish. A staggering 66% of them failed safety tests. Products included smoke and CO alarms that couldn’t detect smoke or carbon monoxide, Christmas lights that could give you an electric shock, USB chargers and travel adaptors that could cause a fire and a power bank that melted during testing.

Which? is calling for the government to give online marketplaces legal responsibility for the safety of products sold on their sites. Until then, these platforms need to enhance their checks before including sellers on their sites, and take strong action against those who break the law to help End Dangerous Products.

12. Amazon Echo, Fire and Kindle – are they worth buying?

Amazon is unusual in that it’s a retailer that sells its own products, as well an online marketplace. It also has a range of Amazon-branded products – the Fire TV streaming devices, Amazon Echo range of smart speakers and Kindle ebook readers are among the best-known of these.

13. Be aware of psychological sales tricks

Like all big retailers and sales events, Amazon Prime Day uses psychological tricks to persuade you to part with your cash.

Wealth management firm Hargreaves Lansdowne has identified the following four Prime Day tactics, which it’s worth being aware of to ensure you don’t end up spending more than you planned:

  • Scarcity: This is a mental shortcut that places a value on an item based on how easily it might be lost. Sales often have a time countdown or limited stock. This idea of scarcity increases shoppers’ desire to get a deal – and gives us the feel-good factor when we do.
  • Sunk cost fallacy: This psychological phenomenon means shoppers don’t want to waste time or money they have already invested. Amazon plays on this by offering a £10 voucher for Prime Day in advance to people who have spent £10 on Amazon with certain small businesses. This makes shoppers feel compelled to shop in order not to waste the credit.
  • Psychology of colour: Amazon’s big discounts are coloured blue – psychologists say this can create a feeling of reliability and security and is often used in advertising and marketing.
  • Benevolence: We feel good when we do something for others. So Amazon is doubling the amount it gives to charities via Amazon Smile on Prime Day.

History of Amazon Prime Day

The first Prime Day was a relatively small affair compared to the behemoth it has become. Back in 2015, just 9 countries were included in Prime Day and more than 34.4 million items were ordered during the 24-hour period — amounting to 398 items per second. What to Expect for Amazon Prime Day 2021

It's official—the seventh annual Amazon Prime Day will again be a two-day affair, kicking off at 3 a.m. ET (12 a.m. PT) June 21 and ending 48 hours later.

Amazon is promising more than 2 million deals this year, covering almost every category. Some of these offers are already available, and more will come in the days leading up to the sale. Consumer Reports will be tracking all the deals from now through the big event to help you find the best offers on the best products.

“Prime Day is a celebration of our Prime members, and we’re excited to bring members great deals across an incredible selection, whether members want to shop and save on top brands, buzzworthy items, or small business collections,” said Jamil Ghani, vice president of Amazon Prime.

Here’s everything else you need to know.

The sale, which includes deals on products of all kinds throughout the site, is open exclusively to Amazon Prime members. You can sign up for a free 30-day trial to take advantage of deals and cancel before the trial period ends if you don’t want to pay for a membership.

Every year, the most heavily promoted deals tend to be on Amazon’s own lineup of devices, including Echo smart speakers, Fire tablets, and Kindle e-readers. There are also special deals on Prime services like Prime Video, Audible, and Amazon Music, typically reserved for first-time subscribers.

These offers have almost always started well ahead of the actual sale, and this year is no different. Amazon already announced early Prime Day deals and promotions that will run in the weeks leading up to the two-day sale, mainly on the brand’s Echo and Fire TV products. There are also early discounts in other categories, including fashion, home improvement, electronics, and grocery, among others. You can start shopping many of these deals now, but others won’t be live until June 13. Here are a few early sales that are already available.

Another of Amazon's early Prime Day deals for Prime members, this Toshiba Fire TV is a decent, if unexceptional, 720p model that offers very good overall high-def picture quality. Plus it has Amazon’s Fire TV smart streaming service—and its Alexa voice-enabled digital assistant—built into the set. It usually costs $200.

Amazon Music: First-time subscribers to Amazon’s music streaming service can get the first four months free—the best deal we’ve ever seen for this service. And if you are going to buy an Amazon Echo device, you can get six months free.

“Spend $10, Get $10”: This deal is aimed at promoting small businesses that sell through Amazon, and the company claims that more than 300,000 merchants are taking part this year. If you buy at least $10 of goods from a small business seller between June 7 and June 20, Amazon will give you a $10 credit to use on Prime Day. This includes select merchandise from Amazon Handmade and Amazon Launchpad.

Amazon is also promising early discounts on toys, small kitchen appliances, home décor, pet products, power tools, headphones, and everyday essentials. And that’s all before Prime Day even begins.

In previous years, we’ve seen price drops on popular items like Instant Pots, robotic vacuums, smartwatches, and even mattresses. There will also be deals and discounts at Amazon’s walk-in stores, including Whole Foods, Amazon Go, Amazon Books, and Amazon Pop Up.

As with past Prime Day events, not all discounts are guaranteed to be available for the duration of the sale. Lightning Deals will have countdown clocks, encouraging shoppers to buy quickly rather than miss the deal. Others may end without warning if items go out of stock. Consumer Reports’ product experts will be tracking all the deals on Prime Day and sharing the best offers on top-tested amazon com prime day since the first year of Prime Day, other retailers have held their own sales around the same time. So far, only Target and Walmart have announced competing sales this year, but we expect others, such as Best Buy, to follow suit in the coming days and weeks.

Target’s Deal Days event will start a day earlier than Prime Day, running from June 20 to June 22. And Walmart is adding another day to that—its sale will start June 20 and end June 23. Both retailers are promising amazon com prime day on a par with what you’d expect for Black Friday. So you’ll be able to compare prices at these and other retailers to make sure you’re getting the best deal no matter where you choose to shop.

Prior to 2020, other retailers would hold sales to compete with Prime Day collectively, which became known as Black Friday in July. It’s still unclear whether these will continue as scheduled or be rescheduled to align with the earlier Prime Day schedule.

If you’re not already a Prime member, you’ll need to sign up for the free trial before the sale begins. This is the only way you can see most Prime Day prices. When is Amazon Prime Day?

The name is slightly misleading — Amazon Prime Day actually lasts two days. Starting at midnight (PDT) on Monday, June 21, Prime subscribers will have access to these exclusive deals. The event wraps up the next day after 48 hours (end of day on June 22), however there are expected to be some deals that last a few days afterwards.

In past years, Amazon Prime Day was held in July. Last year, the sale shifted later in the year to October, due to the pandemic. Out of respect for those displaced from their jobs, and to acknowledge the social and economic instability caused by COVID-19, Amazon decided to delay the two day sale. 13 things you need to know before Amazon Prime Day

Amazon Prime Day 2021 is coming soon. Here are some inside tips on how to get the best bargains in this year’s big summer Amazon sale.

The dates for Amazon Prime Day have been confirmed as 21 and 22 June 2021.

The two-day sale event is returning to its usual summer spot this year after being delayed until October in 2020 due to Covid-19. However, in previous years it tended to fall in July and, according to Tech Radar, this year’s June dates will be the earliest the event has ever taken place.

So what do you need to know before splurging your cash? Read on for expert tips on getting the best price, as well as how to spot fake reviews and whether the Amazon’s Choice badge actually means a product’s any good.

1. What and when is Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day is an annual sales event, which will take place this year on 21-22 June. Deals go live at midnight and popular products are likely to sell out before the end of the 48-hour period.

Prime Day is only available to members of Amazon Prime, which costs £7.99 per month. New members get a 30-day free trial, which you might consider worth it to bag a bargain – just don’t forget to cancel if you don’t want to continue.

If you’re tempted, you can find out more at Amazon.com, but watch out if you don’t want to join: we’ve found many Amazon customers have accidentally signed up to Prime without intending to do so.

Amazon Alexa users will reportedly be offered early access to some deals.

2. What products should I look for on Amazon Prime Day?

Our experts spent Amazon Prime Day 2020 analysing dozens of deals and found some were much better than others.

There were genuine bargains to be had on selected headphones, smartwatches and, perhaps unsurprisingly, Amazon-branded devices such as the Echo Show 5.

3. What do shoppers really think about Amazon?

4. Don’t always trust customer reviews

Good reviews are crucial for people trying to sell on online marketplaces, as potential customers are more likely to buy something if others have bought and enjoyed it.

But positive reviews can also be bought, with sellers paying genuine people for a good review by giving them the product for free or promising gift cards to fund their next purchase. And these aren’t the only ways fraudsters can exploit online reviews.

Which? has conducted numerous investigations into fake reviews on Amazon, as well as other online marketplaces, exposing the multitude of tricks sellers use to artificially promote their products. Don’t get caught out by misleading or fake customer reviews. Top tips to help you avoid getting stung include:

  • Read the comments: do they seem genuine? Does the language seem natural? Are specific details about the product mentioned?
  • Check the dates: if a large number of reviews were posted at the same time, this can be a red flag.
  • Look at the reviewer: see what else they have bought – do these seem like plausible purchases, or could they be being paid or incentivised to review products?

5. Grab a bargain by setting up price alerts

Got your eye on a particular item but wondering if Amazon Prime Day is really the right time to buy?

You can compare the prices of items online using websites such as CamelCamelCamel (for Amazon only), and Google Shopping, Kelkoo, PriceRunner, and PriceSpy among others.

These can help you track prices of items you’re interested in. Some send you an alert when the price drops and have price history charts.

6. What does Amazon’s Choice actually mean?

Amazon doesn’t fully explain how its ‘Amazon’s Choice’ badge is awarded – but we know it’s an algorithm that uses both ratings and price.

Many shoppers view the Amazon’s Choice badge as a mark of quality, but our exclusive Amazon’s Choice investigation last year showed Amazon’s Choice recommending potentially poor-quality products that appeared to have been artificially boosted by incentivised and fake reviews. Which? believes the system is easily gamed by unscrupulous sellers.

Our top tip? Don’t just rely on the Amazon’s Choice badge. Read the reviews yourself, compare prices and look at delivery times, then you’ll be much more likely to make a good purchase.

7. Look for price fluctuations

A year-long Which? price-tracking investigation found Amazon adjusted its prices much more frequently than any of the other big-name retailers we checked.

We tracked the prices of 32 of the most popular makes and models of home and tech appliances across five of the biggest retailers: Amazon, AO.com, Argos, Currys PC World and John Lewis. We found that Amazon adjusted its prices much more frequently than any of the other retailers we looked at.

But it also offered the lowest prices more often than other retailers for the products in our investigation. In fact, it was the most competitive on pricing across multiple categories, including cameras, fitness trackers, kettles, electric toothbrushes and TVs. So if you’re in the market for a big-ticket item, it might be worth watching the price over a few weeks to see whether it changes.

8. Know who you’re buying from 

When shopping with online marketplaces such as Amazon, it’s important to know whether you’re buying directly from the retailer (in this case Amazon) or a third-party seller, as this can affect your rights.

The product page lists who the item is sold by. If it’s a third-party seller, the order can either be fulfilled by Amazon or not; again this should be clear on the listing.

If you are buying from Amazon directly, or if the order is from a third-party seller but fulfilled by Amazon, then Amazon handles delivery, customer service and returns. If you’re buying from a third-party seller which is fulfilling the order itself then delivery, customer service and returns are handled by the seller, rather than by Amazon.

The good news is that these purchases are covered by Amazon’s A-Z Guarantee, which means there is extra support from Amazon if something goes wrong.

9. How is Amazon Prime Day different from Black Friday?

Black Friday and Amazon Prime Day are now big days in the shopping calendar.

Amazon Prime Day usually runs across two days and is only available to members of Amazon Prime.

Black Friday (which nearly all big retailers take part in) is officially on Friday 26 November this year, but retailers often release deals several weeks before the day itself.

Big sales days such as these can offer great bargains. But, with Black Friday in particular, our research shows that the deals aren’t always as good as they seem.

10. What is commingling and why is it important?

You’ve probably never heard of the term ‘commingling’, but if you shop with Amazon it might well have affected your purchases.

Commingling is the term used to describe a practice used by Amazon to help ensure speedy deliveries. It means that when a customer buys a product from a particular marketplace seller, sometimes Amazon sends the same product to you but from a different seller. These sellers essentially share their stock, and it helps them keep deliveries fast and efficient.

Critics, however, have warned it increases the risk of counterfeit products ending up in consumers’ hands.

11. Watch out for dangerous products 

Not everyone realises online marketplaces such as Amazon aren’t responsible for the safety of the products sold through their sites.

In May 2021, a Which? investigation found 21 of the 36 teeth whiteners available on online marketplaces exceeded the legal amount of hydrogen peroxide permitted for home use, including five out of 13 products available on Amazon Marketplace, when we tested them in our labs. 

And last year, Which? worked with five other European consumer associations to investigate 250 products bought from online marketplaces such as AliExpress, Amazon, eBay and Wish. A staggering 66% of them failed safety tests. Products included smoke and CO alarms that couldn’t detect smoke or carbon monoxide, Christmas lights that could give you an electric shock, USB chargers and travel adaptors that could cause a fire and a power bank that melted during testing.

Which? is calling for the government to give online marketplaces legal responsibility for the safety of products sold on their sites. Until then, these platforms need to enhance their checks before including sellers on their sites, and take strong action against those who break the law to help End Dangerous Products.

12. Amazon Echo, Fire and Kindle – are they worth buying?

Amazon is unusual in that it’s a retailer that sells its own products, as well an online marketplace. It also has a range of Amazon-branded products – the Fire TV streaming devices, Amazon Echo range of smart speakers and Kindle ebook readers are among the best-known of these.

13. Be aware of psychological sales tricks

Like all big retailers and sales events, Amazon Prime Day uses psychological tricks to persuade you to part with your cash.

Wealth amazon com prime day firm Hargreaves Lansdowne has identified the following four Prime Day tactics, which it’s worth being aware of to ensure you don’t end up spending more than you planned:

  • Scarcity: This is a mental shortcut that places a value on an item based on how easily it might be lost. Sales often have a time countdown or limited stock. This idea of scarcity increases shoppers’ desire to get a deal – and gives us the feel-good factor when we do.
  • Sunk cost fallacy: This psychological phenomenon means shoppers don’t want to waste time or money they have already invested. Amazon plays on this by offering a £10 voucher for Prime Day in advance to people who have spent £10 on Amazon with certain small businesses. This makes shoppers feel compelled to shop in order not to waste the credit.
  • Psychology of colour: Amazon’s big discounts are coloured blue – psychologists say this can create a feeling of reliability and security and is often used in advertising and marketing.
  • Benevolence: We feel good when we do something for others. So Amazon is doubling the amount it gives to charities via Amazon Smile on Prime Day.

Amazon Prime Day will be here before the end of Q2, which means the massive deals day is happening earlier in the year than it ever has. After a postponed Prime Day in 2020, we expect the shopping “halo effect” to bounce back to 2019 levels and drive traffic and sales for retailers outside of Amazon.

Prime Day typically occurs in mid-July and has expanded from 24 hours to multiple days of deals just for Prime members. Over the years, a halo effect has also emerged. Many retailers promote their own deals at the same time as Prime Day to attract customers searching for deep discounts—including those who aren’t Prime members.

In 2020, the entire retail industry was paying attention to the later-in-the-year Prime Day on October 13 and 14. Would it cause a surge in holiday shopping well in advance of Black Friday and drive demand for discounts even earlier in the season?

Amazon did not announce its total sales figures for the 2020 event. However, Digital Commerce 360 estimates that the company generated more than $10 billion in gross merchandise sales in two days. This is an increase of 45% from over $7 billion in sales in July 2019.

What Will Happen on Prime Day 2021? 

This year, Prime Day is back to its summer schedule (though rumor has it there could be a second Prime Day in the fall). Because of the June date and the recovering global economy, the potential halo effect on the retail industry is up in the air.

At Criteo, we looked at historical traffic and sales data from our retailer partners and our recent consumer survey data to understand Prime Day shopping trends.

There’s no question that Prime Day is popular in the US. In our May 2021 survey, two-thirds (66%) of US consumers said they’re familiar with Prime Day and among those, four out of five (81%) said it gets them in the mood to shop.1

Outside the US, Prime Day has gained momentum in some markets more than others. In the UK, six out of 10 (61%) consumers said they’re familiar with the event,2 while a third (34%) of consumers in Singapore3 and about a fourth (27%) of consumers in Australia4 said the same. However, the majority of consumers who are already aware of the event said it gets them in the mood to shop.

Here, we’re taking a closer look at three big Prime Day trends in the US to help retailers anticipate the halo effect and understand its potential around the world.

Trend #1: The Prime Day 2021 halo effect will more closely resemble 2019.

Our data from Prime Day 2019 and 2020 shows that there is a clear increase in traffic and sales for our retailer partners around the big sale days. However, in 2020, the halo effect began before the start of Prime Day and was more subdued than the year before.

The chart below shows our retailer partners’ traffic and sales data during Prime Day 2019 on Monday, July 15 and Tuesday, July 16 compared to the averages from June 1-28. You can see that the halo effect began exactly on Prime Day.

Traffic increased 12% on Monday and 15% on Tuesday, while sales increased 24% on Monday and 26% on Banks in celebration florida. As you can see, both begin to drop immediately after the end of Prime Day.

The story changes for Prime Day 2020. The events of last year put a strain on the retail industry. Retail sales in the US plummeted from February to March but bounced back in April, according to the US Commerce Department. By mid-year, retailers were focused on strengthening their ecommerce operations to fully benefit from the surge in online sales.

This pushed many spring and summer promotions—including Prime Day—to later in the year when there was excitement for the holiday season and consumers randstad usa near me to start shopping early.

The chart below shows our retailer partners’ traffic and sales data during Prime Day on Tuesday, October 13 and Wednesday, October 15 compared to the averages from September 1-28. You can see that the halo effect starts early, but the traffic and sales spikes are lower than they were in 2019.

By October 12, traffic reaches its highest peak for the event—5% above average—and sales are 13% chase customer support number average.

Sales peaked at 14% above average on Tuesday, have an increase of 8% on Wednesday, and continue to drop after Prime Day ends.

These early spikes could account for the smaller halo effect on the official sale days. However, factors like the delayed timing, proximity to Black Friday, and global uncertainty could have also dampened sales outside of Amazon.com.

As Prime Day returns to the summer and the US economy bounces back, it’s likely that the halo effect will be closer to 2019 levels.

Our recent survey results show that purchase intent for Prime Day is high and consumers plan to look for deals all over the internet. Close to half (45%) of US consumers familiar with Prime Day said they plan to purchase from websites other than Amazon during the event. This percentage is slightly higher (47%) among Prime members.

Trend #2: Prime Day promotions will become table stakes for retailers.

When we split up our data by participating retailers vs. retailers that did not have their own promotions timed with Prime Day, the discrepancy in sales generated is clear.

But, just like the overall halo effect, the sales boost for participating retailers was higher in 2019 than in 2020.

The chart below shows sales from our retailer partners during Prime Day 2019 compared to the averages from June 1-28. Participating retailers saw the highest average increase in sales on Monday, July 15, 2019 (the first day of Prime Day) at 71%. Sales for non-participating retailers stayed at average levels.

This next chart shows sales from our retailer partners around Prime Day 2020 compared to the averages from September 1-28. Participating retailers saw a 43% sales increase on the first day of Prime Day.

These sales figures show how much retailers can benefit from running their own deals timed with Prime Day.

Some big-box retailers have already adopted this strategy in a big way. Target, for example, has lined up its two-day Target Deals Day with Prime Day for the past two years (July 15-16, 2019 and October 13-14, 2020). Walmart’s 2020 Big Save event overlapped with Prime Day, but began on Sunday, October 11 to generate early excitement.

Neither retailer has announced the dates of its 2021 sale days yet, but they’ve set an expectation with consumers that there are deep Prime Day discounts to be found outside of Amazon.

Trend #3: Tech will be big this year, but sales in every category will spike.

Prime Day is a big day for tech deals. Amazon typically offers deep discounts on Alexa devices, which can inspire all types of tech purchases.

Our data uncovered that although tech sales spike around Prime Day, so do sales in other categories.

The chart below shows sales from our retailer partners across categories during Prime Day 2019. The biggest sales spikes happened on the second day of Prime Day, including:

  • 78% for computing and high-tech retailers
  • 51% for mass merchants
  • 41% for home improvement, gardening, and interior design retailers
  • 33% for health and beauty retailers
  • 25% for fashion and luxury retailers
  • 15% for education and family and youth retailers

Prime Day can also amplify seasonal sales patterns. The popularity of summertime home projects might explain the spike in home improvement, gardening, and interior design.

In our recent survey, two-thirds (66%) of US consumers who plan to purchase on Prime Day said they already know what types of products they want to buy:

  • 40% plan to purchase consumer electronics
  • 40% plan to purchase video games
  • 35% plan to purchase toys and games
  • 35% plan to purchase cosmetics and perfume
  • 32% plan to purchase apparel, sportswear, and accessories

Tech gear was the most popular category globally in our survey, with four in 10 prospective Prime Day shoppers (37%) in the US, UK, Australia, and Singapore saying they plan to buy consumer electronics during the event.

Though tech and electronics will no doubt be popular, every type of retailer has an opportunity to drive sales with discounts timed with Prime Day. Categories like beauty, fashion, and home decor can get a significant portion of consumer spend if there are discounts to drive interest leading up to Prime Day.

How to Take Action Ahead of Prime Day

To benefit from the expected halo effect, run special discounts and put those deals in front of consumers who are most likely to buy from you with the right digital ad campaigns.

Target your ads using retailers’ first-party intent and purchase data to drive interest and sales. As we saw from the charts above, traffic increases, but sales increase more, indicating that these shoppers are in purchase mode.

Audience #2: Commerce Audiences

Commerce audiences are built with commerce data that shows products people are interested in, brands they like, and meaningful demographics such as purchase power and gender. This allows you to drive interest and engagement from new customers that are most likely to take advantage of chase personal loan application promotions.

This audience option can also help you engage consumers that were exposed to your awareness campaigns at a time when they’re likely to shop.

Audience #3: Online & In-Store Shoppers

Though Prime Day is an online event, most retail sales still happen offline and in-store sales are climbing across several product categories as vaccine distribution widens. The Prime Day halo effect can get your in-store customers in the mood to shop and inspire offline outcomes like store visits and sales.

If you have access to offline data like store transactions and CRM or CDP data, combine it with your online data to build audiences that include valuable offline shoppers. In addition, work with a partner who can enhance your customer profiles with additional behavior and purchase intent data to get a full view of your customers.
