Off-White founder Virgil Abloh dies at 41 after a private battle with cancer
The street fashion world suffered a major blow after the news of Virgil Abloh's passing broke early on Sunday. He lost a battle with an aggressive form of cardiac cancer, he was 41. Known as the founder of the Off-White brand, Abloh had been leading the street fashion design world for the last decade. During his most important time in his career, he finally landed the Artistic Director role at Louis Vuitton back in 2019. As part of possibly one of the most creative street fashion groups in American history, Abloh was the most advanced student from a group that was initially led by rapper Kanye West. When they both started their careers in fashion, nobody imagined the level of importance both of them would have for popular culture.
Virgil Abloh's family shared the tragic news on his social media pages with the following announcement: "We are devastated to announce the passing of our beloved Virgil Abloh, a fiercely devoted father, husband, son, brother, and friend. He is survived by his loving wife Shannon Abloh, his children Lowe Abloh and Grey Abloh, his sister Edwina Abloh, his parents Nee and Eunice Abloh, and numerous dear friends and colleagues. For over two years, Virgil valiantly battled a rare, aggressive form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma. He chose to endure his battle privately since his diagnosis in 2019, undergoing numerous challenging treatments, all while helming several significant institutions that span fashion, art, and culture."
Virgil Abloh's long-term relationship with Nike.
Despite having a fashion brand he created himself and that job as creative director for Louis Vuitton, the most important work by Abloh by far is with Nike Sportswear brand. Both Nike and Jordan Brand decided to trust Abloh with pretty much every all-time great silhouette they created and give it the Off-White treatment. The most telling charateristic of his design is the evident deconstruction of materials that made all those sneakers seem unifnished. Before today's news, most of those models were already worth thousands of dollars per pair on the resale market. He recently released 'The 50'Off-White Nike Dunk collection and had several other models about to release as well. With Vilrgil's passing, one of the most innovative and creative fashion icons sadly leaves this existence. Abloh will live on through his work and his legacy. May he rest in peace.
