Q: I am in my late 50s with a credit score in the low 800s, until this month. In November of 2018, we moved. In November of 2019 (one year after the move), I used a PNC Bank credit card to purchase $37.50 worth of gas.

I almost NEVER use the PNC card. I always use my Discover card for gas and other miscellaneous purchases then pay it off completely each month. On that particular occasion, there was an issue at the pump with my Discover card, so I used the PNC Bank card. I get my “Discover Card FICO” score each month with my bill. It has been consistently between 830-840 forever.

I did not remember that I used that card on that one occasion and never received a monthly bill from PNC Bank.

Also, I never notified them when we moved a year ago. I assume they were sending statements/letters to my old address, which were not being forwarded because the time limit for forwarding had long since expired.

In January, I got my Discover bill and my credit score showed 710. It dropped more than 100 points! My first thought was fraud, so I got a copy of my free credit report and saw an entry from PNC Bank for nonpayment of a bill over 90 days. I immediately called PNC and, sure enough, I had an outstanding balance of $142. ($37.50 purchase plus 3 months of a $35 late fee).

I immediately paid off the balance over the phone via electronic check. I realize that it is my fault for not notifying PNC of the change of address or for not checking into it when I did not receive the bill, but it just really slipped my mind.

My question: Does PNC have any responsibility at all to update their records with my new address, which I assume they would get from my credit report? Secondly, do you think there is any way this can be taken off my credit report?

I realize it was my fault, but it does not seem fair that one $37.50 incident can trash an 800-plus credit score that it took a lifetime to build. If nothing can be done, how long will it take for that to start having less of an impact on my score?

M.P., North Royalton

A: You got a bit lucky here. Three days after I contacted PNC about your problem, PNC’s executive office contacted you and acknowledged the bank erred.

The employee acknowledged that PNC Bank did in fact have your new address in its system at the time, but that for some reason the new address was not linked to your credit card account.

You’re right that creditors are normally notified automatically by the credit bureaus and the Postal Service when someone moves. As soon as someone’s mail is forwarded — so more than a year ago for you — PNC should have been notified. As soon as your address was changed at the credit bureaus, PNC would have been notified. It’s not clear how PNC learned about your new address and why the information didn’t flow through to the credit card division.

You were told that as a result of this error, “PNC has launched an internal investigation to look into that problem as it appears it could be happening to other people.”

You were told PNC Bank will have the late payments removed from your credit report. This is supposed to be completed internally at PNC within two to three days, she said. You were told it will need to go through to another department that deals with the credit bureaus. Then it could take up to 60 days before your credit report is updated by the bureaus.

The executive’s office offered to call you and send you a copy of the letter/correspondence that they ultimately send to the credit bureaus when that happens.

“She was very apologetic and acknowledged that it was a problem in their system that caused this issue,” you said. “I am obviously very pleased with the customer service I received to resolve this issue.”

You indicated you’re still stinging from the effect on your credit score of having an account closed that you’d had for more than 20 years. But you’re correct that the few points your score may fall from this is a heck of a lot better than having a 90-day delinquency on your file. And because you still have other credit cards and you said you use very little of your available credit limit, you still should expect to have an A-plus rating.

Clearly, you messed up by not notifying PNC about your change of address. As for forgetting to pay a bill for a card you almost never use, it’s understandable. Like I said, you’re fortunate here. I’m glad it worked out.

Something I personally do: I have automatic payments for $50 or $100 each set up for most of my utility and credit card accounts. This is set up through my bank, not each utility or credit card. This is a backstop reminder. I look at my checking account balance every day and look at what automatic payments are pending. When I get bills that come in — for the electric, gas, water, sewer, credit card, cellphone, cable, etc. — I adjust the payment that will be made. If there would be a time that I wouldn’t get a bill or would forget to pay the exact amount due, the automatic payments would remind me. And if I ignored my own internal reminders, at least I’ll have some kind of payment made.

If you’re looking for an inexpensive card to use for routine purchases, the PNC Cash Rewards Visa card is hard to beat — especially if you have a long commute or frequently dine out. The PNC card offers some of the most generous spending bonuses you can find on a credit card with no annual fee, particularly for gas and dining purchases.

Cardholders who prefer to stick with just one card rather than rotate between cards will also appreciate the wider variety of categories that earn bonuses. For example, in addition to big bonuses on gas and restaurant spending, the PNC Cash Rewards card also offers a modest bonus on groceries.

The PNC Cash Rewards card is also not available to everyone. Only cardholders who live in a state with a PNC Bank are eligible.  States with PNC Banks include Alabama, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and District of Columbia.

One of the best cards you can find for gas rewards

If you spend a lot of time filling your car’s gas tank, this is one of the best cards you can use to pay for gasoline. The PNC Cash Rewards card offers an eye-popping 4 percent cash back on gas station purchases, which is one of the best cash back rates you can get on a card with no annual fee.

Most of the PNC Cash Reward’s competitors, by contrast, offer just 2 to 3 percent cash back on gas station purchases or award 5 percent cash back just a few months out of the year.

A well-rounded card for everyday purchases

The PNC Cash Rewards card also offers a standout bonus of 3 percent cash back on restaurant purchases, making it a great card for foodies and large families that like to dine out. Unlike some competitors, the PNC Cash Rewards card doesn’t strictly limit the types of purchases that count toward dining either.

For example, you can earn 3 percent cash back on fast food and café purchases as well at traditional restaurants. In addition, the PNC card offers 2 percent cash back on grocery purchases, making it a good, well-rounded choice for cardholders who prefer to stick with just one primary credit card. General purchases earn 1 percent cash back.

Heavy spenders could hit some roadblocks

You could run into some trouble, though, if you spend heavily on all three categories that earn bonuses. PNC Bank caps bonus spending at $8,000 a year for restaurants, groceries and gas station purchases combined, which is just low enough to significantly crimp your earnings if you have a long commute or feed a large family. For example, if you typically spend more than $666 a month on gas, groceries and restaurants, you’ll wind up earning just 1 percent cash back on those purchases toward the end of the year.

As a result, you may not want to use this card for every errand. Instead, depending on your spending habits, you may be better offer off reserving the PNC Cash Rewards card for gas and restaurant spending only and using a card with a bigger bonus for groceries and other purchases.

Hardly any perks

You also won’t have access to nearly as many perks as you would with other cards. So if you’re a regular user of standard card rewards, such as car rental insurance, extended warranty or price protection, you may not want to use this card for big ticket purchases either.

Your choices for redeeming your cash back will also be more limited than with other cards, so think carefully about how you want to redeem your cash before you apply. For example, the PNC Cash Rewards card lets you redeem your cash for a statement credit or ask for it to be deposited in a PNC bank account. However, you can’t redeem your cash for gift cards or travel or request a check.

Why get the PNC Cash Rewards Visa card?

  • You live near a PNC Bank and want to earn as much cash back as you can on gas and restaurant purchases.
  • You want a well-rounded cash back card you can use for all or most of your everyday purchases.
  • You prefer cash back instead of miles or points and don’t want to pay an annual fee.

How to use the PNC Cash Rewards Visa card:

  • Maximize your rewards earnings by using your card for all your gas and restaurant spending.
  • Evaluate your budget before using your PNC Cash Rewards card for grocery spending. If you typically spend more than $666 a month on gas, groceries and restaurants combined, you may be better off using a different card for groceries. That way, you can continue to earn 3 to 4 percent cash back on dining and gas without exceeding the card’s $8,000 spending cap on bonuses.

A credit card balance transfer typically takes about five to seven days, but some major card issuers ask customers to allow up to 14 or even 21 days to complete the transaction. If you're considering getting a new balance transfer credit card and want to make sure you know how long the transfer will take as well as whether you should even make a transfer in the first place, read on.

How Do Balance Transfers Work?

If you're wondering how balance transfers work, you're probably looking to move some of your high interest debt to a card with a lower interest rate. This is a common debt consolidation strategy and could help you save a significant amount of money in interest.

Credit card companies don't all approach balance transfers the same way. Some companies complete balance transfers electronically, while others issue balance transfer checks directly to you, the account holder, which you then mail to the cards you're paying off. Some credit card issuers may also allow you to transfer your debt from a student loan, a personal loan, an auto loan or a home equity line of credit.

American Express says that it typically takes anywhere from five to seven days for a transfer to be completed, but adds the process can take up to six weeks. Decisions about balance transfers are sent through the mail.

Discover says it typically processes balance transfers in seven days, or 14 days on new accounts. Discover also mentions that if the creditor needs to be paid by a check instead of electronically, the process can take even longer. The company recommends filling out a balance transfer application online to shorten the process.

For cards that operate on the Visa or Mastercard networks, the length of time for a balance transfer varies by the financial institution issuing the card. Capital One, for example, says that it usually takes three to 14 days for a transfer, but the time period depends on whether the transfer takes place electronically or by mail.

Furthermore, most credit card issuers will impose a balance transfer fee, typically 3% to 5% of the amount transferred.

How Long Does the Process Take?

Many credit companies will state how long the balance transfer process takes on their website. If the information is not available online, you can call your card issuer's customer service.

When Does It Make Sense to Transfer a Balance?

When you are able to receive a lower APR on your debt by transferring your balance, it's worth considering. For example, when a new account offers introductory financing with a 0% APR or a lower than standard interest rate, then it can make sense to do so—as long as you plan to pay off the balance before the introductory period ends. It can also be beneficial to transfer your balance to a new credit card with a standard APR that's less than your current card's rate. And if your credit has improved since you opened your last card, you may be eligible for a lower interest rate on a new account.

On the other hand, a balance transfer may not always be the right move. For example, if you're on track to pay off your balance within a few months, it may not be worth spending the 3% to 5% balance transfer fee just to receive a lower interest rate for a short period of time. Before you begin the process of performing a balance transfer, you may want to request a lower interest rate from your current credit card issuer.

In addition, if you think you might rack up additional debt on the card you pay off with a balance transfer, then a balance transfer may not be right for you. If your goal is to reduce your debt and the amount of interest you're paying, put the old cards in a drawer and commit to not using them at least until the transferred amount has been fully paid off.

How Do You Get a Balance Transfer Credit Card?

You must first identify a balance transfer credit card with a 0% APR introductory financing offer for balance transfers, or at least a card with a significantly lower APR than the card you're using.

You also have to be sure that you can qualify for the new card, based on your creditworthiness. Consumers who have good credit scores and pay their bills on time each month tend to qualify for cards with the best balance transfer offers.

Balance transfers offered by credit card issuers are temporary and range anywhere from six to 18 months. During that period, the interest rates could range from 0% to 4% or higher, depending on the credit card company. The credit card issuer will set the credit limit, which is also the maximum amount that can be transferred. This includes the fee the company charges to process the transaction, which is often a percentage of the transfer amount, such as 3% to 5%. For instance, if the balance transfer fee is 3% and the credit limit is $3,000, the maximum amount you can transfer is $2,910.

Consider all the features on new balance transfer cards you're considering, including the standard APR you'll pay once the intro balance transfer rate ends, fees you'll pay on the card (such as annual and foreign transaction fees) and card perks.

Keep in mind that it will take time for the new credit card issuer to send a payment to the card you want to transfer a balance from (or for them to send you the payment, which you'll send to your other card issuers). The entire process can take a couple weeks or more, so stick to your original monthly budget and be sure to continue paying the bills on your cards until the payoff is complete.

Time Is Money

Unfortunately, it's impossible to predict exactly how long a balance transfer will take, but your card issuer should give you a good idea of how long the process usually is. By understanding how these transfers work, you can use your balance transfer to save money on interest charges while you pay off your balance even sooner than you might have thought.
