Mobile payment app complaints are surging as more Americans go cashless

There's been a surge in consumer complaints about mobile payment apps and digital wallets, such as Venmo, Cash App, Coinbase and Zelle, as more Americans go cashless.

That's according to a new report from change my address wells fargo account U.S. Public Interest Research Group, a policy and research organization.  

U.S. PIRG reviewed 9,277 complaints received by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau from April 2017 to April 2021, finding a pattern of issues with digital wallets, scams and customer service.

Digital payment apps allow instant money transfers through connected bank accounts or credit cards.

Most consumers were already using digital payment apps before the pandemic — roughly 4 in 5 Americans, a NerdWallet survey revealed — and Covid-19 only accelerated the demand for cashless payments.  

The U.S. PIRG report found a steady increase in consumer problems, with a spike of 970 digital wallet complaints in April 2021, nearly double the previous peak in July 2020.   

"It's not really clear to consumers that once they send the money, it may not ever come back," said Ed Mierzwinski, consumer advocate at U.S. PIRG.

More than two-thirds of digital wallet complaints focused on three companies: PayPal (owner of Venmo), Square (owner of Cash App) and Coinbase. The report also mentioned PNC Bank, Chase and Bank of America (co-owners of Early Warning Services, LLC, parent of Zelle). 

PayPal received 4,431 complaints, with "managing, opening, or closing your mobile wallet account" as the most common issue. Venmo has seen unprecedented growth over the past year, with more than 70 million active users in the first quarter of 2021. 

Square, the second-most complained about company, had 1,202 complaints, with "unauthorized transactions or other transaction problem" cited most frequently.

Officials at PayPal and Square declined CNBC's request for comment.

Coinbase, a digital wallet for buying and selling cryptocurrency, received 755 complaints, and many noted trouble using the account. The company also had an additional 2,182 complaints about virtual currency, with some users struggling to retrieve their funds.

The company has recently quadrupled its support capacity and delivered new technology to resolve customer issues faster, according to a Coinbase spokesperson.

Zelle, an app that doesn't hold funds, has "invested significantly in consumer education" on how and when to use the service, said a spokesperson from Early Warning Services.

Lack of consumer protections

While many use debit, credit and digital payments interchangeably, the transactions don't have the same fraud protection under federal law, Mierzwinski said. 

Credit cards have the most robust fraud protection under the Truth In Lending Act and Fair Credit Billing Act, with a $50 limit on losses. Debit card scams, regulated by the Electronic Fund Transfer Act, may have more liability, depending on when someone reports the activity.

Although digital payments have some protections under the EFTA, there may be no recourse for someone who falls victim to a phishing scam or accidentally sends money to the wrong account, said Mierzwinski. 

Poor customer service

Customer service problems were a common thread throughout the report. 

For example, some complaints detail account closures at Venmo without an explanation. The company outlines reasons for possible account closures in its user agreement.

Another user shared trouble reaching Zelle, which encourages users to notify their bank or credit union with problems. However, the app does provide a support phone number on its contact page.    

"People are just frustrated that they can't even get in touch with these companies," Mierzwinski said.

Stay vigilant  

Digital payment app users need to stay vigilant to keep their money safe, Mierzwinski said. They can start by checking their app's privacy settings, including public transactions and friends lists. 

"Don't let everybody see your business," he said.

Another savvy move may be asking for a payment request before transferring money. By confirming where to send the funds, users may avoid payments going to the wrong accounts, Mierzwinski said.

And, of course, don't use digital payment apps with strangers. 

"Consumers need to understand that if you go beyond your friends, you may be looking for trouble," Mierzwinski added.

Before using a digital payment app, consumers may also sift through the CFPB's Consumer Complaint Database for a record of recent customer issues.

(Pocket-lint) - In 2018, Google revamped and rebranded its mobile and online payments services, putting them all under the Google Pay or G Pay umbrella. It is, in essence, the company's own alternative to Apple Pay. 

You can use it for online payments, in app purchases, contactless payments in stores and even for peer-to-peer money sending. So whether you're browsing for a new pair of sneakers online or buying your morning coffee, G Pay can do all the heavy lifting for you. 

Here's everything you need to know about Google Pay.

How do you set up Google Pay?

To get started using Google Pay, follow these steps:

  1. Look for the Google Pay app on your phone. It's preloaded on most Android phones and Wear OS watches, but you can also simply download it from Google Play. 
  2. Open the Google Pay app and add a credit or debit card within Cards tab.
  3. If it's your first time using the app, tap Get Started, then select a payment method to add, and take a photo of your card or enter your information.
  4. Google will then verify you via SMS or email authentication.
  5. Simply unlock your phone and tap to use Google Pay at any contactless payment terminal. 

If you're using it on a Wear OS smartwatch, the process is similar. Just open the Google Pay app on your smartwatch, it'll then take you through a setup process on the smartphone that it's connected too, verifying you in a similar way with an SMS message, and asking you to set a PIN, Pattern or PIN lock on your watch. 

How does Google Pay work in stores?

To do in-store purchases with Google Pay, follow these steps:

  1. Look for the Google Pay symbol or contactless payment symbol at a contactless payment terminal near checkout.
  2. Unlock your phone or launch Google Pay on your Wear OS watch.
  3. Hold your phone or watch over the terminal and wait until you see a checkmark or hear the beep confirming the transaction.

You can pay for goods by simply unlocking your Android phone like you normally do (which also enables Google Pay to authenticate your transaction), then placing it call us bank mobile a merchant's contactless terminal, and that's it. You can also pay for purchases under £45 or $50 without unlocking your phone (the screen just needs to be on), though you can only make a certain number of these transactions before your phone will ask you to unlock it.

For purchases above the £45/$50 limit, you'll need to put in your authentication. You don't even need to open an app to process a payment. It just lets you tap and go, and then you receive the confirmation/transaction details on your phone.

How does Google Pay work in apps?

To do in-app purchases with Google Pay, follow these steps:

  1. Open a supported app, like Uber or Airbnb.
  2. At checkout or time of purchase, look for the Buy with Google Pay button.
  3. Press the Google Pay button.
  4. You'll normally be asked to choose the card you want to use, and confirm its 3-digit security number.

Android offers a "Buy with Google Pay" button in apps, meaning you'll be able to tap a button and swiftly checkout, rather than having to enter your credit card and shipping address each time you make a purchase.

How does Google Pay work on websites?

To pay on supported websites with Google Pay, follow these steps:

  1. You can use Goole Pay in any browser.
  2. At checkout on a supported site, just look for the Google Pay purchase button.
  3. You'll normally be asked to choose the card you want to use, and confirm its 3-digit security number.

Now, if you see a box at checkout that says "Use selected info for future purchases from this site," check it to use Google Pay and set it as your default payment method. The next time you plan to buy from that site, just choose what you want to buy, start to check out, and confirm that you want to use the payment information associated with Google Pay. Then, all your information will be auto-filled.

What else can you do with Google Pay?

Just like Apple Pay/Wallet, Google Pay can also be used to store your passes, account cards and travel tickets in one place too. Just open the Google Pay app and tap 'Passes' on the bottom tab to get to them.

Not all airlines or train operators support the feature, sadly, with many preferring to issue tickets as PDFs rather than G Pay bank of america mobile wallet app passes, so whether or not you can use this feature very much depends on who you're travelling with.

One smart feature is that Google Pay can automatically pull in account details from relevant emails and load virtual member passes/account cards into the Passes screen. So if you have a hotel account and you registered with your Google email account, it should pull that info in. 

To add a pass (either public transport, loyalty programme or gift card) just tap the "+ Pass" button and select the relevant option. 

Which devices are Google Pay compatible?

Google Pay is available on all modern Android phones (KitKat 4.4+). However, to pay in stores using Google Pay, your phone must support NFC (near-field communication) and HCE (host card emulation). When you place your phone over a contactless payment terminal in a store, NFC and HCE work together to send your payment information to the store so you can make your purchase.

With Wear OS watches, it's a similar situation. Most modern Wear OS watches will have Google Pay support, providing they have NFC built-in for the contactless transactions. 

To find out if your Android phone supports Google Pay in stores, open your device's Settings app and then tap 'More' under 'Wireless & networks'. If you don't see this option, look for a similar one like 'Connections' or 'NFC' for example. You may need to tap 'More' to see other settings. If you see the option NFC or something similar, you can officially make payments in stores using Google Pay. Yay!

Which banks work with Google Pay?

US

Google Pay works with your credit and debit cards from the following US financial institutions: American Express, Discover, MasterCard, and Visa. These cards are issued by the following US banks and credit unions: Bank of America, Capitol One, Chase, Citi, Discover, PNC, US Bank, Wells Fargo, and more. UK

Google Pay works with your credit and debit cards from the following UK financial institutions: Visa, MasterCard and AMEX cards are supported. These financial institutions support Google Pay in the UK: Bank of Scotland, First Direct, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, M&S Bank, MBNA, Nationwide Building Society, Natwest, and more. Is Google Pay secure?

Theoretically, yes. When you're paying in store, Google said Google Pay doesn't share your actual card details. Instead, the merchant receives a unique encrypted number. Google worked with leading payment networks and financial institutions to deliver industry-standard security tokenisation. With tokenisation, the retailer receives a 16-digit number instead of your account number.

As a result, Google Pay's tokenisation is different from Apple Pay's in that tokens aren't generated in a secure chip within the phone but rather within the cloud. Still, if you should ever lose your phone, Google recommends using Find My Device to find or erase it in order to keep your local data safe from prying eyes. However, Google Pay does accept a PIN code, password, or pattern to authenticate transactions.

What happened to Google Wallet/Android Pay?

Google Pay is a mobile payments app that can store your credit cards, debit cards, loyalty cards, etc. In essence, replacing the old Android Pay and Google Wallet apps and services. Google Wallet's peer-to-peer app is dead, and replaced by Google Pay Send, keeping it in line with the Google Pay brand. Google Pay Send allows you to send and request money to/from family and friends, but it is currently only available in the US.

Confusing, we know. Anyway, Google Pay is officially your one-stop shop for purchases, passes, and payment methods. Google is currently working on bringing Google Pay to all Google products, so whether you’re shopping on Chrome or with Google Assistant, you’ll have a consistent checkout experience, using the cards saved to your Google Account, the company explained in a blog post.

It's also constantly working with partners online and in stores, so you’ll see Google Pay on sites, in apps, and at your stores around the globe.

The Beginning by, Me.

When I finally received my I-Phone, it was time to try banking on line. I downloaded this app & began a totally new adventure. As time provides, I’ve been slowly delving into what I thought would be an amazing experience where banking and bill pay would become easily completed with minimal effort. Wrong, not entirely true. At this point I am frustrated. To simply pay my bills every month, without fumbles, less stress and time, I find out from ALL options, I’m not able to do online banking to pay aforementioned bills because I don’t have the necessary accounts available to do so. I have checking, savings and a fairly healthy CD.I wonder, why can’t I bank online? Why does it say I’m unable to use this app for online banking because I haven’t the accounts to do so? Huh? What? I’m so confused! I can’t locate the forms I need either.I want to be sure when I pass, my daughter receives all my monies from these “Appropriately Established” accounts! I’ve called 3 times to have the forms mailed to me.to no avail and I’m unable to pay my bills online. I’m disabled, hooked up to oxygen, unable to go into the bank as I mentioned when I called. I was told to open online banking that that would help me handle everything from home. If I figure it out one day, you’ll receive the 5th star. Take care my friend.

New ‘Bill Pay’ is Horrible

The new Bill Pay section is poorly designed trash that has ruined the app experience. Not only is it ugly, it does a poor job of visually integrating with the rest of the app. Clunky and unintuitive, to now make an online payment you must sift through multiple screens, making multiple clicks—all of which is very confusing to the consumer. You now also have to manually assign a “pay by” date to complete the process which is terribly annoying. (The default should be set similar to the pre-updated version that automatically sets the earliest possible date for you. But, still allow a user to manually set their own “pay by” date if needed.) Overall, the former Bill Pay was MUCH easier to utilize and MUCH nicer to look at.

To add to the problems, we no longer have the ability to delete old “Pay To” accounts from within the app the way we could previously. Another oversight.

BOA has definitely taken steps backwards with this update. If I had to guess, budget cuts forced BOA to begin implementing new app updates via internal junior-level design team, rather than outsourcing to a professional UI/UX firm. As a result, this update has a “beta” feel displaying poor form, function and usability. Really embarrassing for a big bank.

Auto payment

Your auto payment feature is unacceptable. For some accounts you do not allow payment of statement balance or minimum payment amount which makes it impossible to automatically pay each month to avoid a late payment. You actually require a dollar amount and that can result in an overpayment which we then have to request to be refunded. That did happen to me. So I shut it off and as a result I was charged a late payment for being a few days late paying because I could not access my account to pay an unexpected charge that went through the account. Which leads to my next complaint about the website.

I could not remember my password and therefore could not get a reset as I did not have my credit card available. Instead of allowing reset like other credit card companies by answering chosen questions, you make us enter the account number which I did not have because I could not access my statements which are delivered online. Since I did not have my card with me, I had to call in. having to try to call back multiple times as your lines are very busy. By the time I was able to get a person on the phone, I was 3 or 4 days late paying and you had charged me a late payment. I always pay on time. You have years of history with me paying on time, yet your customer service refused to refund the charge even though I have years of history paying on time and only was late because I could not get into the account.

The Beginning by, Me.

When I finally received my I-Phone, it was time to try banking on line. I downloaded this app & began a totally new adventure. As time provides, I’ve been slowly delving into what I thought would be an amazing experience where banking and bill pay would become easily completed with minimal effort. Wrong, not entirely true. At this point I am frustrated. To simply pay my bills every month, without fumbles, less stress and time, I find out from ALL options, I’m not able to do online banking to pay aforementioned bills because I don’t have the necessary accounts available to do so. I have checking, savings and a fairly healthy CD.....I wonder, why can’t I bank online? Why does it say I’m unable to use this app for online banking because I haven’t the accounts to do so? Huh? What? I’m so confused! I can’t locate the forms I need either....I want to be sure when I pass, my daughter receives all my monies from these “Appropriately Established” accounts! I’ve called 3 times to have the forms mailed to me...to no avail and I’m unable to pay my bills online. I’m disabled, hooked up to oxygen, unable to go into the bank as I mentioned when I called. I was told to open online banking that that would help me handle everything from home. If I figure it out one day, you’ll receive the 5th star. Take care my friend.

New ‘Bill Pay’ is Horrible

The new Bill Pay section is poorly designed trash that has ruined the app experience. Not only is it ugly, it does a poor job of visually integrating with the rest of the app. Clunky and unintuitive, to now make an online payment you must sift through multiple screens, making multiple clicks—all of which is very confusing to the consumer. You now also have to manually assign a “pay by” date to complete the process which is terribly annoying. (The default should be set similar to the pre-updated version that automatically sets the earliest possible date for you. But, still allow a user to manually set their own “pay by” date if needed.) Overall, the former Bill Pay was MUCH easier to utilize and MUCH nicer to look at.

To add to the problems, we no longer have the ability to delete old “Pay To” accounts from within the app the way we could previously. Another oversight.

BOA has definitely taken steps backwards with this update. If I had to guess, budget cuts forced BOA to begin implementing new app updates via internal junior-level design team, rather than outsourcing to a professional UI/UX firm. As a result, this update has a “beta” feel displaying poor form, function and usability. Really embarrassing for a big bank.

Auto payment

Your auto payment feature is unacceptable. For some accounts you do not allow payment of statement balance or minimum payment amount which makes it impossible to automatically pay each month to avoid a late payment. You actually require a dollar amount and that can result in an overpayment which we then have to request to be refunded. That did happen to me. So I shut it off and as a result I was charged a late payment for being a few days late paying because I could not access my account to pay an unexpected charge that went through the account. Which leads to my next complaint about the website.

I could not remember my password and therefore could not get a reset as I did not have my credit card available. Instead of allowing reset like other credit card companies by answering chosen questions, you make us enter the account number which I did not have because I could not access my statements which are delivered online. Since I did not have my card with me, I had to call in... having to try to call back multiple times as your lines are very busy. By the time I was able to get a person on the phone, I was 3 or 4 days late paying and you had charged me a late payment. I always pay on time. You have years of history with me paying on time, yet your customer service refused to refund the charge even though I have years of history paying on time and only was late because I could not get into the account.

Going Touch-Free: How To Set-Up and Use a Mobile Wallet

As the coronavirus pandemic rages on, we are continuing to look for ways to reduce the amount of physical contact we have with potentially contaminated surfaces. Yet, we still need to make purchases at grocery stores, gas stations and other public locations. Thankfully there’s a way to make purchases while avoiding contact, and that’s by using a mobile wallet.

Mobile wallets are the general term for phone-based payment solutions like Google Pay, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Fitbit Pay and others. Although mobile wallets have been around for years, it took a pandemic before I finally set up a mobile wallet myself. Now, after using Google Pay for the past few months, it’s quickly become my method of paying for almost all purchases.

Here’s what you need to know to set up your own mobile wallet.

Benefits of Using a Mobile Wallet

There are four benefits of using a mobile wallet: touch-free payment, greater security, speed and ease.

Mobile Wallets are Touch-Free

The most top-of-mind reason to consider setting up a mobile wallet now is the touch-free aspect. Whether swiping a card or “dipping” a chip, you’ll have to try hard not to touch public surfaces when paying.

Sure, mobile wallets aren’t the only way of contactless payment. You can also “tap to pay” with a contactless credit card. However, using a physical card still requires pulling out your wallet and credit card. By using a mobile wallet instead, you can avoid touching anything besides your phone.

Mobile Wallets are More Secure

Security is another important benefit of using a mobile wallet. When you swipe a credit card’s magnetic stripe, it’s easy for a skimmer to collect all of the data that’s needed to replicate your credit card.

However, when you use a mobile wallet, your actual credit card number isn’t used. Instead, the mobile wallet transmits a unique encrypted number that the payment processor can use to complete the transaction.

Mobile Wallets are Faster

Mobile wallets can also be a faster way to pay. Most merchants have switched to using a chip reader for transactions. And we know the frustration waiting for what seems like an awkwardly long amount of time before the transaction is approved and you can remove the card.

With mobile wallets, you’ll usually only have to place your phone or watch near the payment terminal for a second before you’ll be alerted that the payment has been submitted.

Mobile Wallets are More Convenient

Another benefit of having everything on your phone: you don’t even need to have your wallet on you. This can be handy if you want to stop by a convenience store while out exercising, or if you just want to leave your purse or wallet in the car for ease.

Also, for those of us that have a lot of credit cards, mobile wallets are a much easier way to have access to our cards—without needing to pack our wallet like George Costanza. There’s no limit to the number of cards that you can add to Google Pay. You can add up to 12 cards to Apple Pay on newer devices: iPhone 8 and later or Apple Watch Series 3.

Google Pay

While Android phone users can use several types of mobile wallets, Google Pay is probably going to be your best bet. Google Pay is accepted at millions of merchant locations and has a long list of participating banks.

Note that you’ll need an NFC-enabled Android device running Lollipop 5.0 or higher to use Google Pay.

Which Cards Can be Added to Google Pay?

Whether or not a card is eligible depends on the type of card and the bank that issues the card. For example, all American Express and Barclays cards are supported. However, Bank of America and Synchrony have a lengthy list of ineligible card types.

Generally speaking, almost all personal credit cards from most major banks can be added to Google Pay. Many small business credit cards and even some debit cards from many banks are also eligible to be added. However, many prepaid and debit cards can’t be added.

If you want to see for sure whether your card is eligible to be added to Google Pay, check this extensive list of which cards are and aren’t supported.

How to Add a Card to Google Pay

First, check to see if the Google Pay app is already installed on your phone. If not, you’re going to need to download the Google Pay app from the Google Play store first.

In the app, select the Payment tab, click “+ Payment Method” at the bottom of the page and select “Credit or debit card”.

Google Pay will launch the camera to take a photo of your card to quickly add the details, but you also have the opportunity to enter the details manually. Next, read and accept the issuer terms. Your bank may require that you verify your identity to complete the final step of adding the card to your wallet.

Once in your wallet, you can choose to make the card the default for in-store payments. If you want, you can also set a nickname for the card by clicking “Add Nickname”.

This is a great opportunity to leave yourself a note about what types of purchases you should make with this card. For example, you can nickname the Chase Sapphire Reserve® “Travel and dining” because this card earns 3 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on these categories.

Which Merchants Accept Google Pay?

According to Google, Google Pay is accepted at millions of locations.

As Google points out, you just need to look for one of two logos—either the general tap-to-pay logo or the specific Google Pay logo. And these touchless payment readers are popping up in more and more locations—including self-serve gas stations.

How to Use Google Pay

When you’re ready to pay using Google Pay, just open the app. Or, if you have a Google Pixel phone, you can press and hold the power button to quickly access your wallet.

If you have multiple cards, you can swipe through the available cards to select the one that you want to use. Once you do, just move your phone close to the payment terminal.

When you’re within an inch or two, you should feel a vibration and a checkmark will appear on your phone. That’s your indication that your card information was transmitted and received by the payment terminal.

By the time I’ve slid my phone back into my pocket, the bank has approved the transaction.

Apple Pay

Just as Google Pay has become the defacto mobile wallet for Android users, Apple Pay is going to be the go-to mobile wallet for Apple iPhone users.

In order to use Apple Pay for in-store purchases, you’ll need an iPhone model with Face ID or Touch ID (except iPhone 5s) or an Apple Watch.

Which Cards Can be Added to Apple Pay

Apple boasts that Apple Pay “works with most credit and debit cards from nearly all U.S. banks.” If anything, that’s an understatement. There are over 3,700 individual banks listed on Apple’s list of Apple Pay participating banks. So, you can be pretty sure that your bank is on the list, whether it’s a major bank or a local credit union.

How to Add a Card to Apple Pay

It’s likely that the Wallet app is installed on your iPhone or Apple Watch. If not, you can click here to download it. Once you open the app, click the plus sign at the top right corner of the screen.

Select “Credit or Debit Card” and then “Continue”. The Wallet app will launch the camera to capture your card. You also have the option of entering details manually.

Read and agree to the card issuer’s terms and conditions. As a final step, your bank may require you to verify your identity via phone or text.

If you have multiple cards, you will be prompted to select if you want to add this card as your default card.

If you want to select another card as a default card, just drag and drop a card to the bottom of the list in your Wallet to make it your primary.

Which Merchants Accept Apple Pay?

Apple Pay can be used “in grocery stores, boutiques, and restaurants—and for everything from vending machines to trains and taxis”. Just look for the general contactless payment symbol or the specific Apple Pay symbol to know if you can use Apple Pay at a particular payment terminal.

How to Use Apple Pay

When you want to pay with Apple Pay, open your Wallet app and select the card that you want to use to pay.

With the card selected, verify your identity via Touch ID, Face ID or your passcode. Then, hold your iPhone or Apple Watch near the payment terminal to initiate the payment.

In just a second, your payment information will be transmitted to the bank. By the time you put your phone away, your purchase will likely be approved.

Device-Specific Mobile Wallets

Android Pay and Apple Pay are the two largest mobile wallets. However, there are three major mobile wallets designed for specific types of devices.

Samsung Pay

Samsung Pay is a digital wallet specific to Samsung devices. Samsung Pay supports Visa, Mastercard or American Express credit and debit cards issued by over 1,000 banks and credit unions. And, as with the major players, Samsung Pay is accepted at millions of places.

In addition to debit and credit cards, you can also store and use membership cards and gift cards at a wide range of merchants.

Fitbit Pay

Fitbit users may be happy to find out that they can pay without even needing to pull out their phones. Select Fitbit models—including the Fitbit Ionic, Fitbit Versa 2, Fitbit Charge 4 and special additions of Fitbit Charge 3 and Versa—have an embedded NFC chip and support the Fitbit Pay mobile wallet.

You can add a credit or debit card from over 200 banks and credit unions that support Fitbit Pay. And then Fitbit Pay can be used anywhere you find the touchless payment logo.

Garmin Pay

Similar to Fitbit Pay, some Garmin watch users can utilize Garmin Pay to make purchases using just their watch. Garmin Pay works with cards from over 300 banks and credit unions.

There are currently 44 Garmin watches available for sale that are Garmin Pay enabled with prices starting at $249.99.

Bottom Line

As you see, you can pay using just your phone or watch in several ways. There are already millions of places that accept contactless payments, and these numbers are sure to continue to grow. That’s good news whether you’re trying to avoid touching public places or just want to have the ease of leaving your purse or wallet at home.

What Is a Mobile Wallet?

A mobile wallet is a virtual wallet that stores payment card information on a mobile device. Mobile wallets are a convenient way for a user to make in-store payments and can be used at merchants listed with the mobile wallet service provider.

Understanding a Mobile Wallet

The business-consumer relationship is swiftly becoming digital. From e-commerce platforms to robo-advisors, businesses are transforming the way they operate to meet the ever-changing needs of their clients and the increasing use of mobile phones and devices. Companies in the financial sector are emerging that offer digital platforms and solutions and recognized as members of the Fintech sector. These emerging companies create disruptive tools and services that are easily accessible at a low cost. One area of the financial industry that is rife with innovations is the payments sector. Using mobile technology such as smartphones, tablets or smartwatches, companies and users are adapting to online and offline transactions using devices such as a mobile wallet.

The mobile wallet is an app that can be installed on a smartphone or it is an existing built-in feature of a smartphone. A mobile wallet stores credit card, debit card, coupons, or reward cards information. Once the app is installed and the user inputs payment information, the wallet stores this information by linking a personal identification format such as a number or key, QR code or an image of the owner to each card that is stored.

When a user makes a payment to a merchant, the mobile app uses a technology called near-field communication (NFC), which uses radio frequencies to communicate between devices. NFC uses the personal identification format created for the user to communicate the payment information to the merchant’s POS (point-of-service) terminal. The information transfer is usually triggered when the user waves or holds an NFC-enabled mobile device over the store’s NFC reader.

Not all smartphones or mobile devices are equipped with NFC technology, including the iPhone device. For iPhone users, there are alternative ways to use their mobile wallets to make in-store payments. PayPal’s mobile wallet allows users to make payments using their mobile phone numbers during checkout. The phone number has to be linked to the user’s PayPal account for the transaction to be approved. While PayPal uses phone numbers, other mobile wallets use other personal features identifiable to the user. The LevelUp mobile wallet uses QR codes which can be scanned at the checkout. The defunct Square Wallet used the image of the user which could be easily verified by the teller or attendant.

Fraudulent activities, such as identity theft, are harder to initiate with mobile wallets. While a user’s credit card can easily be stolen or duplicated, smartphones are not that easy to steal. A smartphone that is stolen may be hard to access if there is an access password or fingerprint check installed. Mobile wallets may also have encrypted keys. Mobile wallets are also useful for retail businesses that experience high volumes of transactions per day because mobile wallets help to reduce wait and payment times. This is a win-win for both the customers and the business.

Because mobile wallets are a digitized version of physical wallets, almost every valuable card stored in a physical wallet can also be stored in the mobile wallet such as driver’s license, social security number, health information cards, loyalty cards, hotel key cards, and bus or train tickets.

Digital wallets are often used interchangeably with mobile wallets. However, while they both store payment information, they are implemented differently. Digital wallets are mostly used for online transactions and may not necessarily be used on mobile devices. Mobile wallets are used by people who would rather not carry a physical wallet when making in-store purchases. For this reason, these wallets have to be used on mobile and easy to carry platforms. Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Android Pay are examples of mobile wallets that can be installed on a hand-held or wearable device. A regular PayPal account is a form of a digital wallet, but when it is used in conjunction with mobile payment services and mobile devices, it functions as a mobile wallet.

What is Google Pay, how does it work, and which banks support it?

(Pocket-lint) - In 2018, Google revamped and rebranded its mobile and online payments services, putting them all under the Google Pay or G Pay umbrella. It is, in essence, the company's own alternative to Apple Pay. 

You can use it for online payments, in app purchases, contactless payments in stores and even for peer-to-peer money sending. So whether you're browsing for a new pair of sneakers online or buying your morning coffee, G Pay can do all the heavy lifting for you. 

Here's everything you need to know about Google Pay.

How do you set up Google Pay?

To get started using Google Pay, follow these steps:

  1. Look for the Google Pay app on your phone. It's preloaded on most Android phones and Wear OS watches, but you can also simply download it from Google Play. 
  2. Open the Google Pay app and add a credit or debit card within Cards tab.
  3. If it's your first time using the app, tap Get Started, then select a payment method to add, and take a photo of your card or enter your information.
  4. Google will then verify you via SMS or email authentication.
  5. Simply unlock your phone and tap to use Google Pay at any contactless payment terminal. 

If you're using it on a Wear OS smartwatch, the process is similar. Just open the Google Pay app on your smartwatch, it'll then take you through a setup process on the smartphone that it's connected too, verifying you in a similar way with an SMS message, and asking you to set a PIN, Pattern or PIN lock on your watch. 

How does Google Pay work in stores?

To do in-store purchases with Google Pay, follow these steps:

  1. Look for the Google Pay symbol or contactless payment symbol at a contactless payment terminal near checkout.
  2. Unlock your phone or launch Google Pay on your Wear OS watch.
  3. Hold your phone or watch over the terminal and wait until you see a checkmark or hear the beep confirming the transaction.

You can pay for goods by simply unlocking your Android phone like you normally do (which also enables Google Pay to authenticate your transaction), then placing it near a merchant's contactless terminal, and that's it. You can also pay for purchases under £45 or $50 without unlocking your phone (the screen just needs to be on), though you can only make a certain number of these transactions before your phone will ask you to unlock it.

For purchases above the £45/$50 limit, you'll need to put in your authentication. You don't even need to open an app to process a payment. It just lets you tap and go, and then you receive the confirmation/transaction details on your phone.

How does Google Pay work in apps?

To do in-app purchases with Google Pay, follow these steps:

  1. Open a supported app, like Uber or Airbnb.
  2. At checkout or time of purchase, look for the Buy with Google Pay button.
  3. Press the Google Pay button.
  4. You'll normally be asked to choose the card you want to use, and confirm its 3-digit security number.

Android offers a "Buy with Google Pay" button in apps, meaning you'll be able to tap a button and swiftly checkout, rather than having to enter your credit card and shipping address each time you make a purchase.

How does Google Pay work on websites?

To pay on supported websites with Google Pay, follow these steps:

  1. You can use Goole Pay in any browser.
  2. At checkout on a supported site, just look for the Google Pay purchase button.
  3. You'll normally be asked to choose the card you want to use, and confirm its 3-digit security number.

Now, if you see a box at checkout that says "Use selected info for future purchases from this site," check it to use Google Pay and set it as your default payment method. The next time you plan to buy from that site, just choose what you want to buy, start to check out, and confirm that you want to use the payment information associated with Google Pay. Then, all your information will be auto-filled.

What else can you do with Google Pay?

Account passes/train tickets/boarding passes

Just like Apple Pay/Wallet, Google Pay can also be used to store your passes, account cards and travel tickets in one place too. Just open the Google Pay app and tap 'Passes' on the bottom tab to get to them.

Not all airlines or train operators support the feature, sadly, with many preferring to issue tickets as PDFs rather than G Pay compatible passes, so whether or not you can use this feature very much depends on who you're travelling with. 

Pocket-lint

One smart feature is that Google Pay can automatically pull in account details from relevant emails and load virtual member passes/account cards into the Passes screen. So if you have a hotel account and you registered with your Google email account, it should pull that info in. 

To add a pass (either public transport, loyalty programme or gift card) just tap the "+ Pass" button and select the relevant option. 

Which devices are Google Pay compatible?

Google Pay is available on all modern Android phones (KitKat 4.4+). However, to pay in stores using Google Pay, your phone must support NFC (near-field communication) and HCE (host card emulation). When you place your phone over a contactless payment terminal in a store, NFC and HCE work together to send your payment information to the store so you can make your purchase.

With Wear OS watches, it's a similar situation. Most modern Wear OS watches will have Google Pay support, providing they have NFC built-in for the contactless transactions. 

To find out if your Android phone supports Google Pay in stores, open your device's Settings app and then tap 'More' under 'Wireless & networks'. If you don't see this option, look for a similar one like 'Connections' or 'NFC' for example. You may need to tap 'More' to see other settings. Which banks work with Google Pay?

US

Google Pay works with your credit and debit cards from the following US financial institutions: American Express, Discover, MasterCard, and Visa. These cards are issued by the following US banks and credit unions: Bank of America, Capitol One, Chase, Citi, Discover, PNC, US Bank, Wells Fargo, and more. UK

Google Pay works with your credit and debit cards from the following UK financial institutions: Visa, MasterCard and AMEX cards are supported. These financial institutions support Google Pay in the UK: Bank of Scotland, First Direct, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, M&S Bank, MBNA, Nationwide Building Society, Natwest, and more. Is Google Pay secure?

Theoretically, yes. When you're paying in store, Google said Google Pay doesn't share your actual card details. Instead, the merchant receives a unique encrypted number. Google worked with leading payment networks and financial institutions to deliver industry-standard security tokenisation. With tokenisation, the retailer receives a 16-digit number instead of your account number.

As a result, Google Pay's tokenisation is different from Apple Pay's in that tokens aren't generated in a secure chip within the phone but rather within the cloud. Still, if you should ever lose your phone, Google recommends using Find My Device to find or erase it in order to keep your local data safe from prying eyes. However, Google Pay does accept a PIN code, password, or pattern to authenticate transactions.

What happened to Google Wallet/Android Pay?

Google Pay is a mobile payments app that can store your credit cards, debit cards, loyalty cards, etc. In essence, replacing the old Android Pay and Google Wallet apps and services. Google Wallet's peer-to-peer app is dead, and replaced by Google Pay Send, keeping it in line with the Google Pay brand. Google Pay Send allows you to send and request money to/from family and friends, but it is currently only available in the US.

Confusing, we know. Anyway, Google Pay is officially your one-stop shop for purchases, passes, and payment methods. Google is currently working on bringing Google Pay to all Google products, so whether you’re shopping on Chrome or with Google Assistant, you’ll have a consistent checkout experience, using the cards saved to your Google Account, the company explained in a blog post.

It's also constantly working with partners online and in stores, so you’ll see Google Pay on sites, in apps, and at your stores around the globe.
