The catch:

There are three conditions that must be met.

  1. You have to be a T-Mobile customer with a qualifying wireless plan in the United States.
  2. You have to be depositing at least $200 into your account each month
  3. You have to be registered for the T-Mobile perks program

And, this higher rate only applies to the portion of your balance up to $3,000. The lower interest rate applies to the remaining balance.

While the higher interest rate can help you reach savings goals sooner, these can be limiting conditions.

Ideally, you're already a T-Mobile customer that receives direct deposits of $200 or more per month -- because you're getting the maximum interest earnings from this account.

No Expensive Monthly Fees

Like so many bank customers, you might despise monthly fees.

These fees are common with checking and savings accounts, and banks usually charge fees to help cover overhead costs.

If you want to avoid monthly fees, an online or digital bank is the way to go.

Financial institutions that don’t have brick and mortar locations can usually afford to pay higher interest rates. This is because a digital platform minimizes their overhead costs.

Typically, you can expect to pay a monthly fee anywhere between $10 and $25 with many banks.

A T-Mobile MONEY checking account doesn’t charge a monthly fee. So not only will you benefit from a higher APY, you’re able to keep more of your cash.

Why?

The company has a “Got Your Back” program. This gives eligible customers a 30-day grace period on overdrafts.

To qualify:

  • You must deposit at least $200 into your account each month
  • You must register for this protection

Once registered, you’re allowed up to $50 in overdrafts. You must pay back T-Mobile within 30 days, or else you’ll lose this overdraft protection.

Currently, this overdraft program is only available to customers who also have a qualifying wireless plan.

No worries, though.  

Even if you don’t have a wireless plan, you’ll never have to worry about an overdraft fee.

If you don’t have enough money in your checking account to cover a purchase, T-Mobile declines the transaction.

Ways to Access to Your Money

Because this is a digital banking experience, you might wonder how easy it’ll be to access money in your account. No worries.

Debit card

When you sign up for a T-Mobile Money checking account, you’ll also receive a debit MasterCard. 

It’s also worth mentioning that your debit MasterCard comes with zero liability protection. So if your card is lost or stolen, you’re not responsible for unauthorized transactions.

Download the mobile app and you’ll find an option to temporarily disable the debit card if you can’t locate it.

ATM access

Since T-Mobile isn’t an actual bank, you might also question how much it’ll cost to withdraw cash from your account. 

With that said:

You’ll be happy to know that you’re able to access more than 55,000 no-fee ATMs worldwide within the Allpoint network.

But you can pay your own T-Mobile bill. We’ll walk you through every bill pay method available.

And if you’re wondering what the T-Mobile and Sprint merger will change about paying your bill, the answer is: nothing, at least for now. Just keep paying your bill as normal until T-Mobile tells you otherwise.

Paying with the T-Mobile app

Yes, the future is here: you can pay your phone bill with your phone. There’s no need to write a check or even dial a customer service number. Just download the T-Mobile app and follow these simple steps.

Steps for paying your bill through the T-Mobile app:

  1. Sign in (or create a new account if you don’t have one).
  2. Tap Pay Bill under the Billing and Payments section.
  3. Make sure the payment amount is correct.
  4. Select your payment method and input the required information.
  5. Tap Agree & Submit.

There are actually two online portals where you can pay your T-Mobile bill. One is for those who have a T-Mobile ID and another is for those who don’t. Thanks for making things complicated, Big T! (Just kidding, it’s really not that complicated.)

Pay on the web using a T-Mobile ID

If you’ve got a T-Mobile ID (or want to sign up for one), you can check your account and make a payment using this T-Mobile website. When you go to the page you’ll see something like this:

Once you’ve signed into your account just follow these instructions:

  1. Click Pay Bill.
  2. Put in the amount you want to pay.
  3. Select a payment method (or input a new one).
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Review your transaction to make sure it is correct.
  6. Click Agree & Submit.

Pay on the web without a T-Mobile ID

Does the idea of signing up for another account want to make you puke? Not to worry, T-Mobile has another webpage for “quick and easy one-time bill payment.” Here’s how you can pay as a guest.

Just follow these steps:

  1. Enter your T-Mobile phone number.
  2. Enter the amount you’d like to pay.
  3. Enter your payment details (credit card information).
  4. Click Agree & Submit.

Done and done. It was almost too easy

You can pay your T-Mobile phone bill by calling the company the old-fashioned way. But we don’t recommend it.

For one, it’s harder for most people to call than to just pay online. But the biggest problem with paying by calling an agent is that T-Mobile will charge you an $8 service fee! You can get a phone plan for almost the same price.

If you’re still set on paying your bill over the phone, just follow these steps:

  1. Dial *729 on your T-Mobile device or call +1-800-375-1126 from any phone.
  2. Follow the prompts to make a payment.
  3. Input your payment method.
  4. Be sure to record the confirmation number that you receive.

Yes, we know, that was the most boring $8 you’ve ever spent. Next time pay online and save that money to go see a movie.

There’s nothing quite like writing out a check, addressing an envelope, sticking a stamp on it, and sending it through the post. How quaint!

Here are the steps for sending your T-Mobile bill payment through the mail:

  1. Write a personal check for the amount you want to pay and address it to T-Mobile.

Paying at a T-Mobile store

Some people never want to leave the house (me). But apparently, there are these extroverted people who want to venture into the world and chat with other humans. If you’re one of these people, then find your nearest T-Mobile store and pay your bill there.

(Keep in mind that many T-Mobile stores are closed right now due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Call before you go to check that the store is actually open.)

Once you’re in the store, you might as well ask about upgrading your device or your plan.

Of course, the easiest way to take care of your bill is to just enroll in autopay. With auto pay you’ll never have to think about your bill again (which is exactly what T-Mobile wants).

How to Check Your Prepaid Balance for T-Mobile

Prepaid cell phones can be an affordable alternative to monthly contracts.

You can keep track of your company's prepaid T-Mobile cellular balances from your computer. By creating a My T-Mobile account, you can check the dollars remaining on your Pay As You Go account, or the minutes remaining on your monthly prepaid account. You can also use the My T-Mobile website to buy more minutes or change other features of your service.

Go to the My T-Mobile website (link in Resources.)

Click the "Sign Up" button to create a T-Mobile online account.

Enter your 10-digit T-Mobile phone number without punctuation into the first blank box, and then click "Send Password."

Check your T-Mobile phone for a text message containing a temporary password, and then enter the password into the second box and click "Continue."

Enter a new password, your name and your email address into the remaining boxes, and then click "Sign Up."

Look for your prepaid balance under "Your Account Status" on the main screen

If you’re looking for a new place to put your cash, T-Mobile Money is an interesting option to consider. What it does not have is what money expert Clark Howard likes about it: fees.

But what exactly is T-Mobile Money and is it a good option for you?

In this article, I’m going to tell you everything you need to know about T-Mobile Money. In researching this article, I opened an account and have been using it ever since.

1. What Is T-Mobile Money?

T-Mobile Money is a financial product from wireless carrier T-Mobile. While it isn’t an actual bank, T-Mobile Money provides many of the same services that banks do.

You can open a checking account and deposit your money, knowing that it will be safe. That’s because all funds in T-Mobile Money accounts are held at BankMobile, a division of Customers Bank, and that money is insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) up to $250,000 per customer.

One of the main attractions of T-Mobile Money is that it doesn’t charge fees. That means no transfer fees, overdraft fees or any extra charges.

T-Mobile Money checking accounts offer the option to order a debit card.

2. What Are Some Features That T-Mobile Money Provides?

T-Mobile Money provides many of the features that digital bank customers enjoy including:

  • 1.00% APY (up to 4.00% APY for qualifying T-Mobile customers)
  • 24/7 customer support
  • Digital wallet compatibility
  • Access to 55,000 ATMs in the Allpoint network. Learn more about Allpoint ATMs.

T-Mobile Money is available on your computer or via mobile app (Android and iOS). Like any other banking app, you can deposit cash, order checks and view your account statements and documents.

Customer Service

When it comes to customer service, not all reviews you’ll find online are glowing. But when I called T-Mobile Money’s customer service number (866-686-9358), I was connected to a live person within 30 seconds.

In the app, you also have the option to send a secure message to Customer Service, which T-Mobile says will be answered in 24 hours.

When I contacted Customer Service via app, I was answered in less than a day.

3. Are There Any Perks for T-Mobile Customers?

You don’t have to be an existing customer of the wireless provider to sign up for T-Mobile Money, but if you are one, you can unlock even more features. Those include:

4% Annual Percentage Rate (APR)

You can earn a high amount of interest on your T-Mobile Money checking account if you meet certain criteria related to your balance and wireless plan. T-Mobile Money is currently offering 4% on balances up to $3,000 when you make 10 qualifying purchases each month using a T-Mobile MONEY debit card.

After you pass the $3,000 threshold, you get 1% APY on everything over that balance.

T-Mobile Money customer Dave Roycroft of Denver, Colorado says he’s been able to boost his account by taking advantage of the 4% APR.

“I was astonished at seeing 4% interest, especially when Clark had recommended a multitude of online banks that weren’t offering anything near that,” Roy tells Team Clark.

Since opening his account in 2020 with $300, Roy says he’s been able to more than double that amount thanks to the generous APR.

“I have earned about $320 since starting with T-Mobile Money,” Roy says.

Early Payday

T-Mobile Money also gives you the option to get paid two days early. The condition for this is that you have to sign up for payroll direct deposit.

Overdraft Protection

Although Clark is not a fan of overdraft protection, T-Mobile Money features what’s called Got Your Back protection, which credits your account to help prevent overdrafts.

4. How To Sign Up for T-Mobile Money

If you’re interested in signing up for T-Mobile Money, you can register via the mobile app or online at tmobilemoney.com.

You can choose to use your existing T-Mobile account (like me) or create a T-Mobile ID.

Here are the three steps it takes to sign up with T-Mobile Money:

  1. To get started, it will ask you to enter your Social Security number (you have the option to skip this step initially but it comes up again later in the process).
  2. Enter your street address.
  3. Enter a form of identification (passport or driver’s license).

Once you’ve completed the setup, your account will be created. From there, you can fund your account by connecting it to an existing bank account.

It will typically take two to four days for the cash transfer to be complete.

5. What Is Clark’s Take on T-Mobile Money?

We told you that any no-fee checking account gets high praise from Clark. Here’s what he has to say about T-Mobile Money:

“T-Mobile Money is awesome! And it’s something that we take very few questions about,” Clark says. “To this moment, we’ve had zero complaints about T-Mobile Money as an alternative to using one of those big, bad rotten banks!”

Final Thought

With T-Mobile Money, you get many of the features of a big bank, but without the fees, which makes it a viable financial alternative.

Clark sees T-Mobile Money as the wireless provider’s attempt to keep customers in its ecosystem, along with its bargain promotion app T-Mobile Tuesday and unlimited data plans that include free Netflix.

“T-Mobile is trying to be a ‘stickie,'” Clark says. “If you’re not familiar with that business concept, the idea is that you come up with multiple benefits for your customers so that they become more loyal to you.”

Of course, loyalty comes with a price. That’s why Clark wants you to comparison shop to get the best deal.

Not all databreaches are created equal. None of them are good, but they do come in varying degrees of bad. And given how regularly they happen, it’s understandable that you may have become inured to the news. Still, a T-Mobile breach that hackers claim involved the data of 100 million people deserves your attention, especially if you’re a customer of the “un-carrier.”

As first reported by Motherboard on Sunday, someone on the dark web claims to have obtained the data of 100 million from T-Mobile’s servers and is selling a portion of it on an underground forum for 6 bitcoin, about $280,000. The trove includes not only names, phone numbers, and physical addresses but also more sensitive data like social security numbers, driver's license information, and IMEI numbers, unique identifiers tied to each mobile device. Motherboard confirmed that samples of the data “contained accurate information on T-Mobile customers.”

A lot of that information is already widely available, even the social security numbers, which can be found on any number of public records sites. There’s also the reality that most people’s data has been leaked at some point or another. But the apparent T-Mobile breach offers potential buyers a blend of data that could be used to great effect, and not in ways you might automatically assume.

“This is ripe for using the phone numbers and names to send out SMS-based phishing messages that are crafted in a way that’s a little bit more believable,” says Crane Hassold, director of threat intelligence at email security company Abnormal Security. “That’s the first thing that I thought of, looking at this.”

Yes, names and phone numbers are relatively easy to find. But a database that ties those two together, along with identifying someone’s carrier and fixed address, makes it much easier to convince someone to click on a link that advertises, say, a special offer or upgrade for T-Mobile customers. And to do so en masse.

The same is true for identity theft. Again, a lot of the T-Mobile data is out there already in various forms across various breaches. But having it centralized streamlines the process for criminals—or for someone with a grudge, or a specific high-value victim in mind, says Abigail Showman, team lead at risk intelligence firm Flashpoint.

And while names and addresses may be fairly common grist at this point, International Mobile Equipment Identity numbers are not. Because each IMEI number is tied to a specific customer’s phone, knowing it could help in a so-called SIM-swap attack. “This could lead to account takeover concerns,” Showman says, “since threat actors could gain access to two-factor authentication or one-time passwords tied to other accounts—such as email, banking, or any other account employing advanced authentication security feature—using a victim’s phone number.”

That’s not a hypothetical concern; SIM-swap attacks have run rampant over the past several years, and a previous breach, which T-Mobile disclosed in February, was used specifically to execute them.

T-Mobile confirmed on Monday that a breach had occurred but not whether customer data had been compromised. “We have been working around the clock to investigate claims being made that T-Mobile data may have been illegally accessed,” the company said in an emailed statement. “We have determined that unauthorized access to some T-Mobile data occurred, however we have not yet determined that there is any personal customer data involved. We are confident that the entry point used to gain access has been closed, and we are continuing our deep technical review of the situation across our systems to identify the nature of any data that was illegally accessed.”

In the meantime, you have a few admittedly limited steps you can take to protect yourself, or at least limit the potential fallout if all that data did get stolen. Change your T-Mobile password and security PIN. Companies that have leaked social security numbers and other especially sensitive information have in the past offered free credit monitoring to victims, so keep an eye on communications from T-Mobile to see if it offers the same. As for stopping SIM-swap attacks, there’s not much you can do against a determined attacker, but a good first step is to start using app-based authentication instead of having codes sent to you by text message.

After so many data breaches in recent years, it’s easy to let them drift by without paying much mind. And it’s true, to a certain extent, that most of the data you care about is available to hackers. “If I’m going to be doing some identity theft, most of the information is already out there in one of the dozens of other data breaches that have happened previously,” Hassold says.

But it’s still important to focus on the big ones, both to know your specific risks and to hold companies accountable for their lapses. So far, shrugging it off hasn’t worked; if the data’s legitimate, this would be T-Mobile’s sixth known breach in four years.

How to protect your T-Mobile account in light of the latest data breach

A cyberattack against T-Mobile has resulted in the theft and compromise of certain personal data of almost 50 million people. This week, the carrier acknowledged a major data breach in which cybercriminals obtained the first and last names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers (SSNs) and driver's license/ID numbers of 7.8 million current T-Mobile postpaid customers and more than 40 million former or potential customers who applied for credit with the company. Also compromised were the names, phone numbers and account PINs of around 850,000 active T-Mobile prepaid customers.

Responding to the breach, T-Mobile implemented a few measures, such as two years of free identity protection services with McAfee's ID Chase student checking account minimum balance Protection Service and Account Takeover Protection for postpaid customers. Further, the company has advised all postpaid subscribers to change their PIN, even though it said it wasn't aware of any postpaid account PINs being compromised.

Much of data stolen by the attacker is reportedly already up for sale on the Dark Web. The breach came to light earlier this week upon news that T-Mobile was investigating an underground forum post from someone claiming to be selling customer data obtained from T-Mobile servers, according to tech news site Motherboard.

The data up for grabs included Social Security numbers, phone numbers, names, physical addresses, unique IMEI numbers and driver's license numbers. Motherboard said it looked at samples of the data and confirmed that it contained details on T-Mobile customers.

Much of this data seems destined to end up in the hands of cybercriminals, who will use it for account compromises, identity theft and other illegal activities. That means now would be a good time for all T-Mobile users to take steps to protect and secure their account, including changing the password and PIN and setting up two-step verification. Here's how to do just that.

Sign into the My T-Mobile website to access your account. At the account page, click on the My T-Mobile menu in the upper right and select My Profile. At the Manage profile page, click the first option for Profile information. Scroll down the Profile information page and click the Edit link in the Password section. Type your current password and then create, type and re-type a new password, trying to follow the usual guidelines for devising a strong and secure password. Click Save.

Next, click the Edit link in the PIN section. Type and then re-type a new numerical PIN, creating one with at least six digits. Click Save.

At this screen, you can also set up your security questions if you haven't already done so or you wish to change them. Click the Edit link in the Security Questions section. Choose or change the first, second and third questions, providing an answer for each one. When done, click Save.

To set up two-step verification for your account, look for a section for Two-Step Verification Options. Your best bet here is to use an authentication app, and T-Mobile steers you to Google Authenticator. If you don't already have this app, download it for your iPhone or Android phone. Back at the website, click the Set up link for Google Authenticator. At the next screen, click Get Started. The page should display a QR code.

Open the app on your phone. Tap the plus icon my t mobile online account the bottom of the screen and select the option for Scan a QR code. Scan the code on the webpage with your phone. Click the button to Continue setup. Enter the current six-digit code for your T-Mobile account as displayed in the app on your phone. Click the button to Confirm Code. Each time you sign into your account, T-Mobile will ask you to enter the current code from Google Authenticator.

Finally, you can further protect your account by requiring a password and additional verification method each time you sign in. To do this, turn on the switch for the option my t mobile online account says: "When this option is on, we'll ask you to provide your password and a second verification method every time you log in."

How to Check Your Prepaid Balance for T-Mobile

You can keep track of your company's prepaid T-Mobile cellular balances from your computer. By creating a My T-Mobile account, you can check the dollars remaining on your Pay As You Go account, or the minutes remaining on your monthly prepaid account. You can also use the My T-Mobile website to buy more minutes or change other features of your service.

Go to the My T-Mobile website (link in Resources.)

Click the "Sign Up" button to create a T-Mobile online account.

Enter your 10-digit T-Mobile phone number without punctuation into the first blank box, and then click "Send Password."

Check your T-Mobile phone for a text message containing a temporary password, and then enter the password into the second box and click "Continue."

Enter a new password, your name and your email address into the remaining boxes, and then click "Sign Up."

Look for your prepaid balance under "Your Account Status" on the main screen

Just when you think the massive T-Mobile hack can't get any worse, on Friday the carrier announced that over 50 million people, including current and former customers as well as prepaid customers, were affected by the breach. Information like Social Security numbers, driver's licenses and account PINs were exposed. Here are some steps you can take right now to protect your financial information.

Regardless whether you're a T-Mobile user, the exposure of account PINs is a major danger. For example, Matthew Miller, a contributor to CNET sister site ZDNet, fell victim to a SIM-swap scam and he experienced the fallout for months afterward. Whoever took over Miller's phone number gained access to his Gmail account, and promptly changed his password, then erased every email, deleted every file in his Google Drive account, and eventually deleted his Gmail account altogether. 

Miller later discovered he was targeted because he had a Coinbase account and his bank account was linked to it. Miller's phone received his Coinbase account's two-factor authentication code, so the hackers were able to log into his cryptocurrency trading account and buy $25,000 worth of Bitcoin. Miller had to call his bank and report the transaction as fraud. That's on top of the immense vulnerability he felt.

To be clear, this isn't an issue that's specific to T-Mobile. All wireless carriers and customers can fall victim to SIM-swap fraud. Below are some tips to secure your wireless account.

How to prevent SIM swapping on your account

You can decrease your chances of someone gaining access to and taking over your phone number by adding a PIN code or password to your wireless account. T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T all offer the ability to add a PIN code. 

If you're unsure if you have a PIN code or need to set one up, here's what you need to do for each of the major US carriers. 

  • T-Mobile: Set up T-Mobile's Account Takeover Protection service. You need to add the feature to each individual line on your account. I also suggest changing your account PIN (if you're not asked to while setting up Account Takeover Protection). 
  • AT&T: Go to your account profile, sign in, then click Sign-in info. Select your wireless account if you have multiple AT&T accounts, then go to Manage extra security under the Wireless passcode section. Make your changes, then enter your password when prompted to save.
  • Verizon Wireless: Call *611 and ask for a Port Freeze on your account, and visit this webpage to learn more about enabling Enhanced Authentication on your my t mobile online account src="https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/t-mobile-data-breach-and-sim-swap-scam-how-to-protect-your-identity/" alt="galaxy-s10-lite">

    If you have service through a different carrier, call their customer service number to ask how you can protect your account. Most likely, you'll be asked to create a PIN or passcode.

    When creating a PIN or passcode, keep in mind that if someone has enough information to fake that they're actually you, using a birthday, anniversary or address as the PIN code isn't going to cut it. Instead, create a unique passcode for your carrier and then store it in your password manager. You are using a password manager, right? 

    How to know if your SIM has been swapped

    The easiest way to tell if your SIM card is no longer active is if you completely lose service on your phone. You may receive a text message stating the SIM card for your number has been changed, and to call customer service if you didn't make the change. But with your SIM card no longer active, you won't be able to place a call from your phone -- not even to customer service (more on this below). 

    In short, the quickest way to tell if you've been affected is if your phone completely loses service and you can't send or receive text messages or phone calls.

    What to do if you're a victim of SIM-swap fraud

    The truth is, if someone wants access to your phone number badly enough, they will do all they can to trick your carrier's support representative. What we've outlined above are best practices, but they're not foolproof. 

    Researchers were able to pose as account holders who had forgotten their PIN or passcodes, oftentimes providing recent outgoing calls from the target phone number, called by the actual account holder. How do they know those numbers? They tricked the account holder into calling. Even scarier, sometimes the researchers were able to provide phone numbers for bank of america fallon nevada calls to the account they want to take over. Meaning the bad guy simply needed to call the target's phone number themselves. 

    Once you realize you've lost service on your mobile device, call your carrier immediately and let them know you didn't make the changes. The carrier will help you recover access to your phone number. I can't emphasize this enough -- do not wait to call. The longer someone has access to your phone number, the more damage they can do. 

    Here are the customer service numbers for each major carrier. Put your carrier's number in your phone as a contact:

    • AT&T: 1-800-331-0500
    • T-Mobile: 1-800-937-8997
    • Verizon: 1-800-922-0204

    With your SIM card deactivated, you won't be able to call from your phone, but at least you'll have the number handy to use on someone else's device. 

    You'll also want to reach out to your banks and credit card companies, and double-check all of your online accounts to make sure that the perpetrator hasn't changed your passwords or made any fraudulent transactions. If you find transactions that aren't yours, call your bank or visit a branch right away and explain the situation. 

    Remember, no matter how many PIN codes or passwords we add to our online accounts, there's still a chance that someone will find a way to break in. But at least by setting a passcode for your account, and knowing what to do if you find yourself a victim of SIM swapping, you're prepared. 

    Another critical aspect of strong online security is to use a password manager to create and store unique passwords on your behalf. Additionally, enable two-factor authentication on every account that offers it. And make sure you're not falling for robocalls or scammy text messages.

T-Mobile MONEY Checking Account Review 2021: Should You Open?

Now:

It's possible to earn an even higher interest rate.

The catch:

There are three conditions that must be met.

  1. You have to be a T-Mobile customer with a qualifying wireless plan in the United States.
  2. You have to be depositing at least $200 into your account each month
  3. You have to be registered for the T-Mobile perks program

And, this higher rate only applies to the portion of your balance up to $3,000. The lower interest rate applies to the remaining balance.

While the higher interest rate can help you reach savings goals sooner, these can be limiting conditions.

Ideally, you're already a T-Mobile customer that receives direct deposits of $200 or more per month -- because you're getting the maximum interest earnings from this account.

No Expensive Monthly Fees

Like so many bank customers, you might despise monthly fees.

These fees are common with checking and savings accounts, and banks usually charge fees to help cover overhead costs.
