T-Mobile Online Tool Let Anyone Get Customer Info With a Phone Number

For many of us, our smartphones are not just a way of communicating with the world. They contain sensitive data and can serve as a key to important online accounts. According to security researcher Ryan Stevenson, T-Mobile wasn’t taking account security very seriously. It left a subdomain accessible on the open internet that would provide customer details to anyone who had your phone number. The hole has been patched now, but the site may have been used to hijack accounts.

The domain in question is promotool.t-mobile.com, which is not listed anyplace on the T-Mobile website. However, it’s easy to dredge up in a Google search. The page used to host an unrestricted API that provided access to user account information. You could enter a phone number and get back almost all of the account details associated with it.

The returned data included the customer’s full name, mailing address, account number, and in some instances even part of the tax ID or social security number. The account status was also reported on this page, including notes on past due payments and account suspensions. In some instances, the data also had account PINs and security questions that customers would need to verify their identities with support. With all this data, it would be trivially easy for someone to hijack accounts. There was so much information, someone could even use it to gain access to other online accounts. Think about how often you are asked to verify with an address or the last few digits of your social security number. 

The updated page now asks for a login.

Why would something like this even exist? The promotool site is supposed to be for internal customer support rep use only. But the site didn’t require an account login, and it was accessible from outside of T-Mobile’s corporate network. After Stevenson reported the issue, T-Mobile took steps to close down the rogue API and lock down the web page. If you visit the promotool page now, it demands login credentials.

Stevenson was paid a $1,000 bug bounty for reporting the error, and that’s a deal for T-Mobile. The carrier has struggled to address SIM hijacking and port out scams that allow attackers to steal subscriber phone numbers. This can allow the attackers to retrieve two-factor authentication codes via SMS and break into important online accounts. This web portal may well have helped make those attacks more common. You should still take security measures like adding number porting restrictions to your account, though. There could be more vulnerabilities lurking in T-Mobile’s system.

T-Mobile is investigating a hack of 54 million people’s data — here’s what to do if you think your data was exposed

A hacker on an online forum over the weekend claimed to be selling T-Mobile TMUS, customers’ private data. While the hacker claimed to have data on more than 100 million customers — which would be nearly all of T-Mobile’s U.S. users — the company only confirmed about half of that.

T-Mobile said it is continuing its investigation, and has already reset some account PIN numbers that were exposed. It’s also offering two years of free identity protection services. Here’s what you should do if you think that your personal data could be compromised.

Assume your data is already out there

Even if your data wasn’t among the 48 million exposed accounts, it’s good practice to just assume that your data is already out there, said Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst at Bankrate.com. 

That’s because there have been quite a few big data breaches over the last several years, including credit-reporting firm Equifax’s EFX, shocking breach that exposed the data of 143 million Americans in 2017. So assuming that your data has been leaked already is a good idea.

Freeze your credit

Next, freeze your credit. This stops lenders from being able to see your credit report, making it impossible to open new accounts in your name. 

You can freeze your credit online at no cost through each of the three main credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. 

“That’s really the biggest thing that I would worry about with a breach like this, especially given the information that was taken — Social Security numbers, names, addresses. [That data] could be used to spin up a fake identity or steal your identity to open a credit card that they’re not going to pay back, or some other type of loan,” Rossman said. 

“The big benefit is, if lenders can’t see your report, they’re not going to issue credit [and] it’s going to keep the bad guys out,” he added.

Rossman said it’s good practice to always have a freeze on your credit, which you can temporarily lift when you’re applying for a line of credit. That way, when there’s the next inevitable data breach, your credit is already protected.

“I really think it’s the best defense we have against criminals opening accounts in our names,” Rossman said.

Check your credit report and bank statements

Having good data practices — like regularly changing and varying passwords, not using public Wi-Fi for sensitive business and not giving out personal information — are helpful. 

But most of the battle, Rossman said, is doing the big stuff, like checking your credit report and bank statements regularly. 

With the T-Mobile hack specifically, it doesn’t seem that payment information, like credit card numbers, were swiped. But it’s still a good idea to look out for suspicious transactions. This is just another reminder, Rossman said, of why using credit cards is more secure than using debit cards. It’s relatively easy to get a fraudulent transaction wiped off your credit statement, he said, but when you’re using debit, that’s real money missing for a time.

But what’s more worrying, and harder to undue, is someone opening a fraudulent account in your name. So when checking your credit report, look closely for accounts that don’t belong to you. 

“This is something that we’ve been hearing more about in recent years; sometimes they just directly steal your identity, other times it’s more of synthetic ID fraud where they blend some of your information with some of somebody else’s information,” Rossman said. “I would definitely be on the lookout for accounts that don’t belong to you — that could definitely be a red flag.”

Typically, you can get a free copy of your report from each of the three credit bureaus once every 12 months. But during the pandemic, you can access a copy of your credit report for free every week at annualcreditreport.com.

Keep an eye out for any strange or unexpected bills

Something that people might not expect is someone using the hacked information to get health insurance in your name, Rossman said.

“That’s another thing that I don’t think a lot of people think about that is ID theft, but that’s another one where you definitely want to be on the lookout if you get some weird explanation of benefits or a health insurance claim that doesn’t belong to you,” he said.

This one might be a little harder to ward off, because a credit freeze isn’t going to stop it, and there’s not really anywhere you can check to see if someone is doing this. 

But if you get a weird bill in the mail, don’t “just throw it out and be like, ‘Oh, that’s weird. That wasn’t me,’” Rossman said. “If you get something like that, you definitely want to escalate it.”

You could also check your health insurance claims through your provider online to make sure there aren’t any you didn’t file.

Keep your guard up

And if you’re not a T-Mobile customer, it’s still important to keep good security habits. 

“Whether it’s this breach or another one, it’s just important to keep our guard up,” Rossman said. “Sometimes, there’s a long tail to these things.”

Your data might have been leaked now, but the actual fraud could happen in a few years, or you might have your identity stolen now because of a hack from years ago. Therefore, it’s smart to regularly monitor your reports, keep your guard up and put a freeze on your credit.

More than 54 million people are at risk of identity theft and other cybercrimes, after a massive data breach at T-Mobile exposed some of the most sensitive personal information the carrier had about its customers

The stolen data, which came from the wireless provider's databases of current, former and prospective customers, included Social Security numbers, as well as other key information cybercriminals could use to open up new credit cards, file fraudulent tax returns or apply for driver's licenses under the victims' names.

On Friday, T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert said the company's investigation into the breach was "substantially complete," though it continues to coordinate with law enforcement. He apologized for the hack and said the company had hired Mandiant, a cybersecurity company, and KPMG, a consultancy, to shore up its cyber defenses.

"To say we are disappointed and frustrated that this happened is an understatement," Sievert wrote in a statement, adding that keeping customer data safe is a "top priority."

Here's what we know about the giant cyberattack so far:

What happened?

T-Mobile says cybercriminals compromised its systems and stole the personal information of current, former and prospective customers. The company initially said the attack, which it confirmed on Aug. 16, affected about 40 million people, but it later raised the total to more than 54 million people.

The information stolen included consumer names, addresses, Social Security numbers and dates of birth, along with driver's licenses and other identification. In some cases, IMEIs and IMSIs, which identify devices and accounts, were taken. Some account PINS were also stolen.

T-Mobile says there's no indication any consumer financial data, such as credit card or other payment information, was compromised.

Who's to blame?

As with all cyberattacks, figuring out who did it can be tricky. The Wall Street Journal published on Aug. 26 an interview with John Binns, a 21-year-old American, who claimed responsibility for the hack. Binns, who moved to Turkey a few years ago, called T-Mobile's security "awful" and said he'd committed the hack in part to get attention. He declined to say whether he was paid to carry it out or if he'd sold any of the stolen data. 

The Journal reported that it remains unclear whether Binns was working alone or with others. It also reported that the Seattle office of the FBI is investigating. T-Mobile is headquartered in nearby Bellevue, Washington.

What's T-Mobile doing about it?

In its statement, T-Mobile said its investigation, conducted with the help of Mandiant, identified how the attacker gained entry to its servers, vulnerabilities it's since closed. As a result, the company says, it's confident the customer data isn't at risk of being stolen again by different cybercriminals.

T-Mobile said it's tasked Mandiant with developing a strategic plan to boost its overall cybersecurity operations. KPMG will review T-Mobile's security policies to identify gaps and areas that need to be improved.

What about the people affected?

T-Mobile says it's contacted nearly all the affected customers and that those it believes weren't affected will see a banner on their online account login page notifying them. It's also in the process of attempting to reach all the affected former and prospective customers.

To those affected, T-Mobile is offering free access to McAfee's ID Theft Protection Service for two years and advanced spam-blocking. It's also offering its Account Takeover Protection service to protect postpaid customers, which is designed to protect consumers from having their accounts ported out and stolen. The company has also reset PIN numbers for all prepaid customers after the exposure of 850,000 accounts.

How can I protect myself?

Once your personal information has been compromised, there's really no getting it back. The best you can do is try to keep tabs on it. Taking T-Mobile up on its offers of identity theft and account takeover protection can help with that.

Meanwhile, people who've had their Social Security number stolen should freeze their credit. That'll prevent anyone other than them from opening a new financial account or taking out a loan in their name. 

This is a good time to make sure you're using strong passwords and two-factor authentication on all of your accounts. A password manager can help you set and store those keys to your accounts, while tools such as Google's Password Checkup, Mozilla's Firefox Monitor and the website Have I Been Pwnd? will let you know if any of your passwords have been compromised.

In an email overnight, T-Mobile shared details about the data breach it confirmed Monday afternoon. They’re not great. Assorted data from more than 48 million people was compromised, and while that’s less than the 100 million that the hacker had initially advertised, the vast majority of those affected turn out not to be current T-Mobile customers at all.

Instead, T-Mobile says that of the people whose data was compromised, more than 40 million are former or prospective customers who had applied for credit with the carrier. Another 7.8 million are current “postpaid” customers, which just means T-Mobile customers who get billed at the end of each month. Those roughly 48 million users had their full names, dates of birth, social security numbers, and driver’s license information stolen. An additional 850,000 prepaid customers—who fund their accounts in advance—had their names, phone numbers, and PINs exposed. The investigation is ongoing, which means that the tally may not stop there.

There’s no good news here, but the slightly less bad news is that the vast majority of customers appear not to have had their phone numbers, account numbers, PINs, passwords, or financial information taken in the breach. The bigger question, though, is whether T-Mobile really needed to hold on to such sensitive information from 40 million people with whom it doesn’t currently do businesses. Or if the company was going to stockpile that data, why it didn’t take better precautions to protect it.

“Generally speaking, it’s still the Wild West in the United States when it comes to the types of information companies can keep about us,” says Amy Keller, a partner at the law firm DiCello Levitt Gutzler who led the class action lawsuit against Equifax after the credit bureau’s 2017 breach. “I’m surprised and I’m also not surprised. I guess you could say I’m frustrated.”

Privacy advocates have long promoted the concept of data minimization, a fairly self-explanatory practice that encourages companies to hold on to as little information as necessary. Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation codifies the practice, requiring that personal data be “adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary in relation to the purposes for which they are processed.” The US currently has no equivalent on the books. “Privacy laws in the United States that do touch upon data minimization generally don’t require it,” Keller says, “and instead recommend it as a best practice.”

Until and unless the US adopts an omnibus privacy law similar to the GDPR—or state-level legislation like the California Consumer Privacy Act starts taking a harder line—data minimization will remain a foreign concept. “In general, collecting and retaining sensitive data of prospective and former customers is not an act of consumer fraud under US law, and is routine,” says David Opderbeck, codirector of Seton Hall University’s Institute of Law, Science and Technology. As inappropriate as it may seem for T-Mobile to keep detailed records on millions of people who may never have been their customers, there’s nothing stopping it from doing so, for as long as it likes.

Now those former and prospective customers, along with millions of current T-Mobile subscribers, find themselves victims of a data breach they had no control over. “The first risk is identity theft,” says John LaCour, founder and CTO of digital risk protection company PhishLabs. “The information includes names, social security numbers, driver’s license IDs: all the information that would be required to apply for credit as someone.”

The hack would also potentially make it easier to pull off so-called SIM swap attacks, LaCour says, particularly against the prepaid customers who had their PINs and phone numbers exposed. In a SIM swap, a hacker ports your number to their own device, typically so that they can intercept SMS-based two-factor authentication codes, making it easier to break into your online accounts. T-Mobile did not respond to an inquiry from WIRED as to whether International Mobile Equipment Identity numbers were also implicated in the breach; each mobile device has a unique IMEI that would also be of value to SIM-swappers.

T-Mobile has implemented a few precautions on behalf of victims. It’s offering two years of identity protection services from McAfee’s ID Theft Protection Service, and it has already reset the PINs of the 850,000 prepaid customers who had theirs exposed. It’s recommending but not mandating that all current postpaid customers change their PINs as well, and it is offering a service called Account Takeover Protection to help stymie SIM-swap attacks. It also plans to publish a site for “one-stop information” Wednesday, although the company didn't say if it would offer any kind of lookup to see if you’re affected by the breach.

Instead, T-Mobile says it will rely on proactive outreach to victims. The carrier didn’t respond to an inquiry from WIRED as to what if any specific plans it had for that communication, and what specific information they’ll be sharing with people whose data was compromised. Even sharing something as simple as a timetable would help, LaCour says, so that people could know they’re in the clear if they haven’t been a T-Mobile customer for a certain number of years.

In the meantime, if you’re a current T-Mobile customer you should go ahead and change your PIN and password; you can do so from your T-Mobile account online. You should take the free two years of ID monitoring, although it’s not yet clear how that will work in practice. You should start using app-based two-factor authentication wherever possible, rather than receiving those codes by text. For a more extreme but still prudent precaution, you can contact the three major credit bureaus and request a freeze on your credit report, which would stop anyone from accessing it or opening new accounts in your name.

Because the US lacks a comprehensive cybersecurity law, agencies like the Federal Communications Commission and Federal Trade Commission have limited ways to apply pressure, says Seton Hall’s Opderbeck, although the incident has already attracted FCC scrutiny. “Telecommunications companies have a duty to protect their customers’ information,” an agency spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “The FCC is aware of reports of a data breach affecting T-Mobile customers and we are investigating.”

If T-Mobile does face repercussions for the breach—its sixth in four years—it would more likely come from a class action lawsuit. Opderbeck says that his research has shown more than 30 data breach settlements in the last few years that resulted in a small cash payout and free credit monitoring as restitution. And Keller notes that even the class action route may be difficult to travel, because of a clause in T-Mobile contracts that can force customers into arbitration.

It’s not realistic to expect every company to stop every breach, especially when those companies posses data highly valuable to hackers. But it is reasonable to hope that a business in that position would take every care to limit the impact of those compromises. Keeping detailed records of more than 40 million former or prospective customers—including their social security numbers and driver’s license information—seems needlessly reckless. After all, nobody can steal what isn’t there in the first place.

If you don't receive the six-digit code through SMS

  • Wait for the progress bar to finish and retry. The wait time may take up to 10 minutes.
  • Don't guess the code or you'll be locked out for a period of time.
  • If the timer runs out before you receive the registration code, an option will appear to request a phone call. Choose the Call me option to request the call. When you answer the call, an automated voice will tell you the six-digit registration code. Enter this code into the WhatsApp Business app.

Troubleshooting steps

If you're having issues registering, try the following:

  1. Turn your phone off, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on.
  2. Delete and reinstall the latest version of WhatsApp Business here.

When T-Mobile executives wanted to shake up the U.S. cellular industry, they announced the Un-carrier initiative, offering to free customers from long-term cellular contracts and expand their access to no- or low-cost roaming plans — a strategy that was once painted as unsustainable, yet helped the company win over huge numbers of customers and ultimately absorb smaller rival Sprint. Today, the combined company is a viable third-place challenger to Verizon and AT&T, so it’s announcing Un-carrier Next, the 17th step in its plan to “continue to change wireless for good.”

Initially, T-Mobile is rolling out a new ScamBlock feature so customers can block scam calls manually using only a dialing code. On July 24, a more fully functioned ScamShield app will become available for download, adding granular controls over different types of blocking — some for free, some for an additional charge, including calls from prison phones, political numbers, telemarketers, and other categories of potentially unwanted callers. There will also be a simple way to report spam callers.

T-Mobile notes that it is fighting scam calls and robocalls on a network level, using an AI system that updates its profile every six minutes to create network-wide blocks on user-reported callers and suspicious routing of calls, as well as employing the industry-wide caller verification system Stir/Shaken. This contrasts with prior device-level blocking approaches that require OS- or app-specific measures to block calls as they come in, instead stopping them before the phone ever rings or sending them straight to voicemail. T-Mobile users will now see Caller ID details in the same way as they see contact information, and/or a mark of StirShaken verification to let callers know a real person or business is calling.

Arguably the biggest surprise in the event was the announcement that T-Mobile customers will be given a free second phone number, called Proxy#, which will let individual users and families have a way to avoid sharing their personal numbers with companies that gather and share numbers. Proxy# will apparently be a single shareable number across an entire family account, and include a separate voicemail box, which can gather up calls from businesses. The company will also allow customers to have a fresh start with their first phone number, switching for free.

The “Un-carrier” moniker has been meant to signal that T-Mobile isn’t a traditional cellular carrier, and the various initiatives that rolled out over the years have been stabs at common carrier practices: confusing billing, extended contract requirements, crazy international roaming fees, and so on. In each case, T-Mobile took the opportunity to “fix” rivals’ perplexing practices. Today’s move fits that mold, dramatically reducing if not fully eliminating user costs for fighting bad callers who have been empowered by the growth and low costs of scamming people on mobile networks.

Privacy advocates have long promoted the concept of data minimization, a fairly self-explanatory practice that encourages companies to hold on to as little information as necessary. Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation codifies the practice, requiring that personal data be “adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary in relation to the purposes for which they are processed.” The US currently has no equivalent on the books. “Privacy laws in the United States that do touch upon data minimization generally don’t require it,” Keller says, “and instead recommend it as a best practice.”

Until and unless the US adopts an omnibus privacy law similar to the GDPR—or state-level legislation like the California Consumer Privacy Act starts taking a harder line—data minimization will remain a foreign concept. “In general, collecting and retaining sensitive data of prospective and former customers is not an act of consumer fraud under US law, and is routine,” says David Opderbeck, codirector of Seton Hall University’s Institute of Law, Ope sas andalucia and Technology. The hack would also potentially make it easier to pull off so-called SIM swap attacks, LaCour says, particularly against the prepaid customers who had their PINs and phone numbers exposed. In a SIM swap, a hacker ports your number to their own device, typically so that they can intercept SMS-based two-factor authentication codes, making it easier to break into your online accounts. T-Mobile did not respond to an inquiry from WIRED as to whether International Mobile Equipment Identity numbers were also implicated in the breach; each mobile device has a unique IMEI that would also be of value to SIM-swappers.

T-Mobile has implemented a few precautions on behalf of victims. It’s offering two years of identity protection services from McAfee’s ID Theft Protection Service, and it has already reset the PINs of the 850,000 prepaid customers who had theirs exposed. It’s recommending but not mandating that all current postpaid customers change their PINs as well, and it is offering a service called Account Takeover Protection to help stymie SIM-swap attacks. It also plans to publish a site for “one-stop information” Wednesday, although the company didn't say if it would offer any kind of lookup to see if you’re affected by the breach.

If T-Mobile does face repercussions for the breach—its sixth in four years—it would more likely come from a class action lawsuit. Opderbeck says that his research has shown more than 30 data breach settlements in the last few years that resulted in a small cash payout and free credit monitoring as restitution. And Keller notes that even the class action route may be difficult to travel, because of a clause in T-Mobile contracts that can force customers into arbitration.

It’s not realistic to expect every company to stop every breach, especially when those companies posses data highly valuable to hackers. But it is reasonable to hope that a business in that position would take every care to limit the impact of those compromises. Keeping detailed records of more than 40 million former or prospective customers—including their social security numbers and driver’s license information—seems needlessly reckless. After all, nobody can steal what isn’t there in the first place.

More than 54 million people are at risk of identity theft and other cybercrimes, after a massive data breach at T-Mobile exposed some of the most sensitive personal information the carrier had about its customers

The stolen data, which came from the wireless provider's databases of current, former and prospective customers, included Social Security numbers, as well as other key information cybercriminals could use to open up new credit cards, file fraudulent tax returns or apply for driver's licenses under the victims' names.

On Friday, T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert said the company's investigation into the breach was "substantially complete," though it continues to coordinate with law enforcement. He apologized for the hack and said the company had hired Mandiant, a cybersecurity company, and KPMG, a consultancy, to shore up its cyber defenses.

"To say we are disappointed and frustrated that this happened is an understatement," Sievert wrote in a statement, adding that keeping customer data safe is a "top priority."

Here's what we know about the giant cyberattack so far:

What happened?

T-Mobile says cybercriminals compromised its systems and stole the personal information of current, former and prospective customers. The company initially said the attack, which it confirmed on Aug. 16, affected about 40 million people, but it later raised the total to more than 54 million people.

The information stolen included consumer names, addresses, Social Security numbers and dates of birth, along with driver's licenses and other identification. In some cases, IMEIs and IMSIs, which identify devices and accounts, were taken. Some account PINS were also stolen.

T-Mobile says there's no indication any consumer financial data, such as credit card or other payment information, was compromised.

Who's to blame?

As with all cyberattacks, figuring out who did it can be tricky. The Wall Street Journal published on Aug. 26 an interview with John Binns, a 21-year-old American, who claimed responsibility for the hack. Binns, who moved to Turkey a few years ago, called T-Mobile's security "awful" and said he'd committed the hack in part to get attention. He declined to say whether he was paid to carry it out or if he'd sold any of the stolen data. 

The Journal reported that it remains unclear whether Binns was working alone or with others. It also reported that the Seattle office of the FBI is investigating. T-Mobile is headquartered in nearby Bellevue, Washington.

What's T-Mobile doing about it?

In its statement, T-Mobile said its investigation, conducted with the help of Mandiant, identified how the attacker gained entry to its servers, vulnerabilities it's since closed. As a result, the company says, it's confident the customer data isn't at risk of being stolen again by different cybercriminals.

T-Mobile said it's tasked Mandiant with developing a strategic plan to boost its overall cybersecurity operations. KPMG will review T-Mobile's security policies to identify gaps and areas that need to be improved.

What about the people affected?

T-Mobile says it's contacted nearly all the affected customers and that those it believes weren't affected will see a banner on their online account login page t mobile account number lookup them. It's also in the process of attempting to reach all the affected former and prospective customers.

To those affected, T-Mobile is offering free access to McAfee's ID Theft Protection Service for two years and advanced spam-blocking. Once you have the correct Straight Talk account number and pin, the porting process is mostly automated. Porting your number from Straight Talk can take as little as a few hours. According to FCC guidelines, wireless service carriers legally have up to 72 business hours to complete a port request.

If there is a delay during your port, have the new carrier contact Straight Talk. They may need to manually release the number (MDN) so the port process can complete.
