Fort Columbia, Scarboro Hill, and Chinook Point .
Scarboro Hill is the hill which rises above Chinook Point and is the home to Fort Columbia. Scarboro Hill (sometimes seen as "Scarborough Hill") was named after James A. Scarborough who settled at Chinook Point in 1843, filed a Donation Land Claim, and lived on the property until his death in 1855. James Scarborough's property extended about a mile along the north bank of the Columbia, and included all of Chinook Point and most of Scarborough Hill.

According to "HistoryLink.org" website of Washington State History (2007):

". Ann Scarborough died in 1852 and Captain Scarborough died two and a half years later, on February 4, 1855. On April 23, 1856, James Birnie, guardian of Scarboroughs two young sons, sold the Scarborough Donation Land Claim to Rocque Ducheney for $1,250. On March 7, 1864, Captain George Henry Elliot bought the property on behalf of the United States from Ducheneys heirs for $2,000. An additional $1,000 was paid to Ducheneys widow and her new husband for a fort columbia historical state park deed renouncing all interest in the property. The Secretary of War approved the transaction and the deed was recorded on March 13, 1867. In 1898, the property became the U.S. Army's Fort Columbia. At the end of World War II, Fort Columbia was declared surplus and in 1950 was transferred to the custody of the state of Washington. Since then it has been a state park. Twelve historic wood-frame buildings still stand on the premises. ."

Chinook Point was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 (Site #66000747) for its discovery by Captain Robert Gray, laying the foundation for claim of the Pacific Northwest by the United States, and its subsequent stratigic military location of Fort Columbia.

Fort Columbia History .
Fort Columbia was built from 1896 to 1904, one of three forts designed for harbor defense of the Columbia River (the other two being Fort Canby and Fort Stevens). Fort Columbia remained fully manned and operational through three wars, until declared surplus in 1947 at the end of World War II, when it was transferred to the custody of the State of Washington in 1950 and became Fort Columbia State Park. In 2004 the State Park became part of the Lewis and Clark National and State Historical Parks, a grouping of sites important in the Lewis and Clark story. Twelve historic wood-frame buildings remain.

From Larry J. Weathers in The Sou'wester (1989, Pacific County Historical Society and Museum):

". FORT COLUMBIA: A deactivated military fort, now known as Fort Columbia Historical State Park, on Chinook Point overlooking the Columbia River. The Chinook Indians called the point "No's-to-ils" and the hill (now called Scarborough Hill) behind the point "No'si-misp". The point and hill were a permanent Indian encampment for decades unknown before the arrival of white settlers. Chief Concomly, a famed Chinook leader (ca. 1810 to 1830), maintained his principal lodge on the hill. Captain James Allan Scarborough, retired Hudson Bay Company employee, and his Indian wife Ann Elizabeth, settled on the hill around 1846 and filed a Donation Land Claim under the Law of 1850. After his death in 1855, title to the property was transferred to Rocque Ducheney, HBC employee living in nearby Chenookville. In 1867, the Federal government purchased Chinook Point for a military reservation from the Ducheney heirs for $2,000. It wasn't until 1895 that the War Department decided to build a fort and install gun batteries. The fort was first occupied by a regular garrison in June 1904. A post office was established June 30, 1890, and continued in operation until January 31, 1923. Fort Columbia was deactivated March 28, 1947, and listed as surplus. The old military post became Fort Columbia Historical State Park at a dedication ceremony held June 17, 1951. ."

Hike Description

The mouth of the Columbia River, from the Spanish-American War until the end of World War II, was defended by three forts: Fort Stevens in Oregon and Fort Canby and Fort Columbia in Washington. Fort Columbia became surplus in 1947 and was transferred to the Washington State Park system. Before the U.S. Army arrived, this area at Chinook Point saw the arrival in 1792 of Captain Robert Gray, who named the Columbia River after his ship, the Columbia Rediviva. The Lewis and Clark Expedition camped near here, at Station Camp, for several days in November 1805, before shifting to the site of Fort Clatsop. Fort Columbia is now one of the Lewis and Clark National and State Historical Parks. You can walk the gun emplacements and buildings here (some of them are sometimes open as a museum and interpretive center) and then take the leafy trail up Scarborough Hill, where you’ll get few views but find solitude among the giant Sitka spruce and dense salal and salmonberry thickets. Note that windstorms in the past decade have destroyed some of the trail system on the hill; longer loop options shown in older guidebooks are no longer possible.

Behind the parking area, there are interpretive signs giving an introductory history of the fort, a plan of the site, and a trail map. Take in the views from here over Battery Ord and the Guard House to Sand Island and Cape Disappointment. Saddle Mountain in Oregon can also be seen from the parking area. Walk down the road and take a right for the Guard House, which has restrooms, and look over Battery Jules Ord, constructed between 1896 and 1898. Then walk down the road a little more, passing the gravel Gun Battery parking area, and turn in (left) at Battery 246, never completed and decommissioned in 1945, where you see one of two six-inch guns that were brought here in 1993 from Newfoundland. These guns are identical to the ones that would have been installed here (Battery 246 did serve as a Washington State Department of Civil Defense Emergency Operating Center from 1960 - 1970). Walk around to the second gun, and then inspect Battery Crenshaw, which was armed with three three-inch rifles between 1900 and 1920. The guns are no longer here, but you can inspect their rusting mounts. Just to the west is Battery Murphy, the most active of the three completed gun emplacements at Fort Columbia as it was manned in three wars from 1900 to 1945. The two six-inch disappearing guns are gone, but you can explore the magazine room, shell room, engine room, and ammunition hoists.

From Battery Murphy, walk down to the wood building below, formerly the ordnance storehouse and now an active theater. A grassy path, shaded by red alder and Sitka spruce, leads between the blackberries to a four-way junction. Go left here to descend to the isolated pocket beach at Chinook Point, cluttered with driftwood and rimmed by seaweed covered rocks. At low tide, you can scramble right across the rocks to get views back to Saddle Mountain and across to the mouth of the Columbia and Cape Disappointment. Back at the junction, the path to your left takes you to a viewpoint above Chinook Point. Return to the junction one more time, and descend to a grassy expanse. The Searchlight Powerhouse is on your left and, just beyond it, a dark opening overhung with vines leads into the New Mine Casemate, the operations center for triggering the mines that had been strung across the river in times of war. This dank, eerie place still exhibits the remains of washstands, electricity cables, and a water heater.

Walk out to the entrance arch and then up the entrance road. You’ll pass a plaque on your right that commemorates the designation of the site as a National Historical Landmark in 1961. Pass the RV/Bus Parking Area and walk along the street behind the lower row of officers’ residences. Turn left at the end of the row and hike uphill with the former hospital building, now Scarborough House (James Scarborough was the first white settler north of the Columbia River). Keep straight up the hill, passing a last picnic table, and reach a grassy track extending into the woods: the Military Road Trail.

This old road track, which led to observation posts, ascends gently under alder and big-leaf maple. Large Sitka spruce begin to appear in the hillside forest. A spur leads off to the right and eventually reaches a fenced concrete dam on Canyon Creek: entry forbidden. Keep left on the road track and pass the remains of two observation stations (entry also prohibited here) and then, at a massive spruce, get a view over the Columbia. The road switchbacks at the junction with the abandoned Comcomly Trail and rises through a salmonberry/elderberry thicket. Pass through a sunny opening and reach the junction with the Scarborough Trail. (Note: on a wet day, you might wish to continue up the Military Road here, as dense, dripping thickets overhang the trail and soak you from the top down.)

Hike on the level on a spur of the Military Road. This ends soon and becomes a true foot trail that winds up through the Sitka Spruce forest with a smattering of western hemlock and bountiful red huckleberry bushes in the summer. Tunnel through a lush thicket and traverse a slope, noting many more impressive Sitka spruce. Eventually reach the junction with the old Canyon Creek trail and keep left although, again, you could give this a miss on a wet day. This trail used to lead down the drainage of Canyon Creek, but now only about half a mile remains. Follow a contour, passing thorugh another tunnel of salmonberry, before dropping to the edge of a windfall corridor at the saddle between Scarborough Hill’s two peaks. Here a sign says: “Trail Closed: Please Turn Around!.”

Walk back to the junction and proceed left down the Military Road to close the loop by descending through more spruce/hemlock woods and the road bed hemmed in by salmonberry, elderberry, and the drooping vines of big root. Keep left at the next junction, and descend to the fort area. At the top of the parking area, you can take the short grassy track down to the site of the fort’s powerhouse and telephone switchboard. A 1913 generator is on exhibit within the powerhouse.

Fort Columbia State Park

Fort Columbia State Park is a public recreation area and historic preserve at the site of former Fort Columbia, located on Chinook Point at the mouth of the Columbia River in Chinook, Washington. The 618-acre (250 ha) state park features twelve historic wood-frame fort buildings as well as an interpretive center and hiking trails.[2] The park's grounds are located over a tunneled section of U.S. Route 101.

History[edit]

Fort Columbia was built from 1896 to 1904 to support the defense of the Columbia River. The fort was constructed on the Chinook Point promontory as part of a "triangle of fire" defensive strategy that included Fort Canby and Fort Stevens.[3] Fort Columbia was declared surplus at the end of World War II and was transferred to the custody of the state of Washington in 1950.[2]

In the 1960s and 1970s, Battery 246 was outfitted to serve as a Civil Defense Emergency Operating Center and was one of several possible locations the governor could use in an emergency. In 1993, the park received a pair of 6-inch guns that were transferred to Battery 246 from the former Fort McAndrew, Naval Station Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada.[4]

Features[edit]

One of the park's two coastal artillery guns

Exhibits at the Fort Columbia Interpretive Center focus on the fort's history, early explorers and pioneer history. The Commanding Officers Quarters is decorated with turn-of-the-century furnishings. The park grounds feature three artillery batteries and two coastal artillery guns. There are picnicking facilities and 5 miles (8.0 km) of hiking trails that work their way up Scarborough Hill. Two historic homes, the Steward's House and Scarborough House, are offered for rental.[2] The park is one of several state parks and sites in Washington and Oregon that make up the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park.

Fort Columbia, Scarboro Hill, and Chinook Point ...

"... An additional $1,000 was paid to Ducheneys widow and her new husband for a quit-claim deed renouncing all interest in the property. Twelve historic wood-frame buildings still stand on the premises. ..."

Chinook Point was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 (Site #66000747) for its discovery by Captain Robert Gray, laying the foundation for claim of the Pacific Northwest by the United States, and its subsequent stratigic military location of Fort Columbia.

Fort Columbia History ...

"... The old military post became Fort Columbia Historical State Park at a dedication ceremony held June 17, 1951. ..."

Fort Columbia Historical State Park is a 593-acre day-use historical park located at the Chinook Point National Historic Landmark and along 6,400-feet of freshwater shoreline on the Columbia River. Within the park are original U.S. Army Coastal Artillery fort buildings and batteries, active from 1896 to 1947. This area was also home to the Chinook Indian Nation and their famed Chief Comcomly, and explored by Robert Gray and the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Fort Columbia is one of the few intact coastal defense sites in the U.S. and features historic fort buildings and batteries. The park provides beautiful views of the Columbia River estuary. An interpretive center, observation station, historic officer’s house, and 5-miles of hiking trails through mature forest are additional features of this park. Wildlife viewing and picnicking are also popular activities. Two of the historic buildings are available for vacation rental.

Fort Columbia State Park

Military and maritime history buffs, take note! Fort Columbia State Park is considered one of the most intact historic coastal defense sites in the U.S. Constructed between 1896 and 1903, renovated during World War II and de-commissioned in 1947, this day-use park on Chinook Point near the mouth of the Columbia River will take you back to the early 20th Century.

Fort Columbia’s small size and the historic integrity of its buildings give visitors an intimate feel for what life must have been like during its active years. Stroll amidst officers’ homes, artillery batteries and two 6-inch, rapid-fire, World War II-era disappearing guns that are among six still in existence. The guns were transferred to the park in 1993 from a U.S. Naval facility in Newfoundland. Peruse the park’s interpretive center for artifacts, photos and stories about exploration, the fur trade and the military community on the Columbia.
