Regions Bank: Making banking and wealth management easier using data science and machine learning

Regions serves customers across the South, Midwest and Texas and through its subsidiary, Regions Bank, operates more than 1,300 banking offices and approximately 2,000 ATMs.

Regions began its big data journey to serve customers better, meet their needs and help them reach their financial goals. To do this, Regions needed to become a best in class data-driven organization - delivering measurable results by integrating both internal and external data and applying advanced analytics – which would require the right organizational structure, talent and a data science platform to build analytical solutions at scale.

Challenge

Regions’ previous big data environment was used as an operational data store with fragmented data and no centralization. A variety of tools were used to build one-off, siloed models. The company also needed a solid foundation for data governance and models so data could be broadly leveraged for analytical and data science use cases.

"We needed all these components regions bank locations in the united states work together. Trying to piecemeal multiple platforms is difficult, inefficient and leads to performance issues,” said Manav Misra, Chief Data and Analytics Officer. “You need a single platform to bring everything under one security model, have one set of data assets that can be leveraged in one place, and have one data pipeline with modelOps capability that allows you to build these models and deploy at scale."

For example, the bank’s corporate relationship managers had access to data, albeit across ten different systems and interfaces. They needed and wanted better insight into their client’s cash flow and financial stability, so they could provide better advice and recommendations.

Fraud detection and prevention was also critical. The growth of digital banking has opened new doors for criminals to try innovative ways to steal from banks and customers. Identifying fraud – at the account and transaction level – is imperative. While account-based fraud detection models maximize at about 5 million records, transaction data includes billions of records, so processing this volume for fraud models is a significant challenge.

Solution

Implement an enterprise data science platform as a flexible foundation for the bank to launch new 'data products' for customers and employees.

Regions’ built its new enterprise data science platform powered by Cloudera Data Platform (CDP) and Cloudera Data Science Workbench.

"We had regions bank locations in the united states this data at our fingertips, but few good ways to take advantage of it. People were having to manage it, and scaling was a challenge,” said Daniel Stahl, Regions Data and Analytics Platforms Manager. “With the data lake, suddenly we could access all this historical data in one place and not have to bring that data anywhere else to do our analytics. That really enabled us to scale and use the data as we needed."

Regions continues to modernize its architecture, upgrading to CDP Private Cloud (PVC) Base. This upgrade allows Regions to be agile and respond quickly to the needs of its data product users and customers. Data is ingested in real-time using the robust streaming features available in CDP. Cloudera Professional Services supported the upgrade planning, process, and implementation. Along with tight upgrade windows, Regions needed an in-place upgrade by installing CDP on their existing environment, instead of a longer migration path that included data migrations, operational overhead to set up new clusters and the lead time needed to procure and set up new hardware. This minimized both downtime and risk for test, development, and production clusters.

"Upgrading to CDP has made everything run so much smoother and faster. We have so much more capacity available to us because we didn't have these legacy mediums that we had to worry about," stated Stahl.

Now, Regions leverages the multi-function analytics and data lifecycle capabilities within CDP. Data is ingested using Kafka and enriched and processed using Spark. Deep data analytics is performed using Hive and Impala, and finally Cloudera Data Science Workbench helps data scientists discover deeper insights. Cloudera SDX dovenmuehle mortgage bill payment consistent security and governance, ensuring the right users have access to the right data the correct way.

As Regions evolves its data environment, they plan to take advantage of more functions:

  • Seamless access to different ML libraries for different types of analytics jobs.

  • Taking advantage of features for isolated workloads, leveraging a containerized environment with Regions bank locations in the united states and benefitting from a hybrid cloud architecture.

  • Data science workloads will benefit from bursting to the public cloud, since they won’t have to be active 24/7, only ad hoc. Spinning workloads up and down as needed will be much more cost effective, resulting in a more than 10% cost savings.

Enhanced customer conversations with data insights

Regions uses predictive modeling to improve conversations between corporate relationship managers and customers. The models provide insights in a single, user-friendly interface. Bankers can easily use the data to better inform existing client meetings and drive conversations that may not have otherwise happened. Regions calls this and similar solutions “data products,” providing insights that help better meet client’s financial needs. These insights help bankers stay a step ahead, with answers to questions that haven’t even been asked yet.

Region’s hybrid cloud data lake is critical to deploy new data products. It’s helped the bank deliver a better customer experience, increased efficiency, and driven over $10 million per year in retention savings.

Flexibility has been another benefit, as well as easy access to a variety of advanced analytics capabilities.

"The flexibility, tools and partnership with Cloudera have also allowed us to start leveraging Spark for big data analysis. Through refinement, we’re up to four different fraud data products – all made possible because of our data lake environment. As we move more towards streaming data, san jose state financial aid on the transaction side, we'll be able to take advantage of things like Spark Streaming and Kafka to do more real time analytics," explained Stahl.

ML models lead to fraud prevention benefits

In the past, bank employees were flooded with numerous alerts from flagged transactions. Reviewing them all was challenging. With advanced analytics, fraudulent transactions can be more easily identified and addressed.

The results have been impressive. A production ML model for risk scoring improved fraud capture rates by 95%, decreased false-positive alerts by 30%, and resulted in a 50% reduction in average daily dollar losses. Operationally, with fewer alerts to manage, manual interactions focus on suspicious transactions. Rules are informed by the models and adjusted dynamically when new fraud schemes arise.

"Creating an analytics Center of Excellence, we’ve brought data into a centralized data lake, rolled out a data governance framework, applied machine learning and AI techniques, and, above all, adopted an end-to-end business approach that emphasizes value delivered by the products we create.” Misra added. “The result has been trusted analytical solutions that help reduce risk, detect fraud, assist commercial relationship managers and private wealth advisors, and provide insights into consumers so we can better meet their needs."

You can still find much of the information you’ll need to know for these accounts online. However, it can be hard to find certain information like the Standard Pricing rates and fees for CDs.

Luckily, you do have access to a Regions banker through online chat. You’ll just need to provide your name and email to begin chatting and asking your questions.

How Do I Access My Money?

You can access your money wherever you can find the bank. This means at a physical branch if you live near one, over the phone, online or on the bank’s mobile app. You’ll need to provide personal and account information any time you want to access your money.

When accessing your money online, you’ll log in with your online banking info. The same goes for mobile banking. Both online and mobile banking allows you to make transfers, request money monitor transactions and more at just a click of a button.

How Can I Save More Money With a Regions Bank Account?

Unfortunately, Regions Bank offers some of the lowest interest rates when it comes to its bank accounts. Even the more preferred savings account, LifeGreen Savings, offers the lowest interest rate.

Some accounts, like Regions CDs and money market accounts, earn at higher interest rates when you pair the account with a Regions checking account. This snags Relationship Pricing rates which usually end up a little higher than standard rates. You’ll also benefit further by having higher account balances, since some accounts offer higher rates for larger sums of money.

To earn at the highest rates the bank can offer, you’ll want to open one (or more) of its Promotional CDs. This ensures the most competitive rates since they’re promotional. Otherwise, you can look into the money market accounts or the 18 Month Variable Rate IRA.

What’s the Process for Opening an Account With Regions Bank?

You can’t open every Regions bank account online. You can do so for its savings (except Savings for Minors), Regions Money Market and checking accounts. Once you choose the account you'd like to open, you'll be brought to the page shown in the image here to fill out your information. The application process should typically take 10 minutes to complete.

You’ll have to visit a branch in person to open a Savings for Minors account. You can visit a branch or call the bank at 1-800-734-4667 to open a CD and/or IRA account.

No matter how you apply for an account, you’ll need to provide personal and banking information. Your personal information will include your Social Security number, email address, driver’s license, etc. You’ll also have to provide some bank account information. This means information fo a checking or savings account or credit or debit card. This is in order to fund your new account. All bank accounts require a minimum deposit of some amount, depending on the account.

What’s the Catch?

For starters, Regions bank is limited to Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. So while the bank has thousands of ATMs and offices, these are confined to the above 15 states.

If you live in these areas and are able to open a Regions account, you may be disappointed by the low interest rates. Most of the bank’s accounts earn at the lowest interest rate in the industry. If you’re looking for higher rates and no fees, most online banks have much higher rates than Regions can offer.

Finally, many Regions Bank accounts charge a monthly fee and have minimum deposit requirements. This may place certain accounts out of reach for those who cannot meet those costs. You are able to waive some monthly fees, but that often requires meeting a minimum balance amount.

Bottom Line

Regions Bank certainly does not have a shortage of bank accounts. If you’re looking for a bank where you can open multiple accounts, like a savings account and money market account and an IRA, for example, this could be the bank for you. You’ll just have to make sure you live in an area where the bank is available.

The bank does fall short, however, in its ability to grow your money to the best of the industry’s abilities. Its interest rates are pretty low, even when you have the highest account balance and relationship rates. If you’re looking to maximize your deposits, you should look elsewhere for higher interest rates.

Regions Bank Review

Who Is Regions Bank Best For?

Regions Bank is a well-established choice for those who want in-person banking and free ATMs in the 15-state service area: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. It might be a good fit for you if you also want these benefits:

  • Free checking available if you qualify for fee waivers
  • Check cashing for non-account holders
  • Free online bill payment
  • Cash deposits at selected ATMs
  • No-monthly-fee bank accounts for minors

What Does Regions Bank Offer?

Accounts

Checking Accounts

LifeGreen Checking

Account-holders may qualify for a fee waiver by maintaining an average monthly balance of $1,500 in the account or by setting up automatic deposits totaling at least $1,000 per month or a single monthly automatic deposit of at least $500. Otherwise, the account charges a monthly fee of $11 with paper statements or $8 with online statements.

The account requires a minimum opening deposit of $50 and comes with a Visa check card, free access to online banking and bill paying, mobile banking, and unlimited check writing. Service members receive two fee-free transactions at non-Regions ATMs per month. Account-holders must be at least 18-years-old to use Zelle.

LifeGreen Simple Checking

The LifeGreen Simple option is identical to the regular LifeGreen account except it has a lower monthly fee that cannot be waived. An account with paper statements costs $8 per month, and an account with online statements cost $5 per month. This account exists as a less expensive option for customers who cannot meet the standards to have fees waived on a regular LifeGreen checking account.

LifeGreen Preferred Checking

Preferred accounts pay an annual percentage yield that can vary, in addition to all of the features that come with a regular LifeGreen checking account. Additionally, Preferred customers pay no fees for cashier's checks or money orders. A flat monthly fee of $18 can be waived by meeting any of these standards:

  • $5,000 average monthly balance
  • Maintaining at least $25,000 in all Regions accounts combined
  • Having at least $25,000 outstanding in all Regions loan accounts

LifeGreen eAccess Account

The eAccess account is for customers who do most of their banking online and do not need to write a lot of checks. It has all of the features of a regular LifeGreen checking account, but only the first three paper checks are free, and there is no option to receive paper statements. A flat monthly fee of $8 can be waived by making at least 10 purchases per month with a Regions debit or credit card.

LifeGreen Checking for Students

Customers 25 years of age or younger can get an account with all of the benefits of a regular LifeGreen checking account with no monthly fee. The name of the account is a bit misleading in that there is no requirement to be a student. Eligibility is based solely on age.

62+ LifeGreen Checking

The 62+ account is nearly identical to a regular LifeGreen checking account, except account holders must be 62 years of age or older, and the monthly fee can be waived with a single monthly direct deposit of $300, instead of the $500 minimum for a regular account.

Money Market Accounts

Regions Money Market Account

Account-holders can earn an APY that varies, and pay no monthly fees if maintaining a daily balance of at least $1,500. To open an account, a minimum opening deposit of at least $100 is required. Up to six transactions—including transfers, withdrawals, and checks—may be made each month free of charge, but each transaction beyond six cost $15.

Savings Accounts

Regions LifeGreen Savings

Accounts pay an APY that varie, but an additional 1% annual savings bonus can be earned by setting up at least $100 per month in transfers from a Regions checking account. The account has no monthly fee and no minimum daily balance for customers who also have a Regions checking account. Accounts can be opened with an initial deposit of only $5 if opened at a branch or $50 if opened online.

Up to three transfers or withdrawals per month can be made for free, but each transaction after that costs $3.

Savings for Minors

Customers can open an account for a child younger than 18 with no fees and no minimum balances. An initial deposit of $5 is required. The APY can vary.

Credit Cards

Credit Cards

Regions Bank offers multiple credit cards through Visa with features ranging from rewards to cash back. Some of the cards offered include:

Rewards Credit Cards

  • Regions Prestige Visa Signature
  • Regions Premium Visa Signature

Cash Back Credit Cards

  • Regions Cash Rewards Visa Card

Low-Interest Credit Card

Secured Credit Card

  • Regions Explore Visa Card

Certificates of Deposit (CDs)

Regions Bank offers CD terms ranging from seven days to as long as six years. They are available to anyone with a Regions Bank checking account. Minimum deposits required for CDs are $500 for accounts with terms of 90 days or longer, $2,500 for accounts with terms from seven to 89 days, and $10,000 for a promotional 9-month term.

Final Verdict

BENEFITS

Regions has a wide range of products and services, and there are plenty of retail locations available to customers in the bank’s 15-state service area. If you want high-touch service, you can get your needs met.

DRAWBACKS

Although you can earn interest at Regions, rates on savings accounts are low compared to online banks. Also, the Regions Bank product lineup is a bit confusing, with Promotional products, Relationship pricing, and multiple versions of checking accounts. Choice is good, but the average consumer might not be up for the task of figuring out all of the different options.

My Choice for Hometown Banking

I have banked with Regions Bank for many years. I am always very satisfied with their excellent quality service. Over the years I have experienced a few obstacles related to my checking account that were no fault of Regions. I was frightened that someone was able to withdraw $1000 from my account through the internet. Especially since I did not have the money I’m my account. The disaster to my account could have been unbelievable. I contacted Regions and they were on top of it immediately. They resolved all the problems caused by this withdrawal and it did not cost me a dime!
I moved from a small town 230 miles south. I was so happy that Regions had a branch here in Chatsworth Georgia where I have lived for the past 10 years.
I highly recommend Regions Bank to all my friends, family and some strangers. Thank you Regions for a GREAT job and amazing service.

Hi nurse31015 - We really appreciate your feedback! We're glad to see you're having a great customer experience with Regions. Thanks for the high FIVE!

Horrible change

The Regions app used to be a somewhat decent app with many features that were useful, now they decided to revamp the app by making it extremely annoying to use; from its basic super minimalistic look to the fact that it rarely ever works when you need it! I continue to receive a message whenever I attempt to log in whether it is using the face ID feature or password it is always the same message that access to the account/app is not available at the time to try later on and that almost never used to happen before this “update”. I would suggest going back to the basic formula and revamp the app’s look based on functionality and not looks - it seems most of your clients were satisfied with the previous look and only asked for a few tab upgrades instead of this whole “new useless look” .... maybe you should start listening to them for a change, and also fix that annoying log in glitch since I would like to have access to my account anytime and anywhere not just certain times of the day and having to resort to using the web instead of the app is tedious and defeats the purpose of having an app. Thank you in advance.

Best regards,

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We apologize for any issues that you've experienced. Please know that we're continuously working to improve the functionality and stability of the mobile app.

Constructive criticism

I haven’t been a member that long with Regions but I see room for improvement especially when it comes to the app . First , I think the whole app could use an update . Member to member service could be offered through the app . I see where regions is partnered with zelle . Not a lot of people use that app including myself. Basically be able to link a another bank account through the app for automatic transfer or payments . This is my second (backup) account. Also , a money manager tab where we can set savings goals & so forth to accomplish . With a start & end date and be able to set the amount of course . Also set up auto bill payment , estatements , and also be able to update contact information as well . The app is so behind to me it seem so old fashioned in a sense . It could just be because I have a regular life green basic account . But I’d like to see improvement in 2020 . Hopefully this reaches someone who is capable & willing to make the suggested changes .

Best regards,
A. Curry

Regions Bank – Powerhouse Bank In The South, Midwest

Regions Bank logo thumbnailRegions Financial Corporation today ranks as one of the country’s largest banks, with $126 billion in assets, about 1,500 offices and 1,900 ATMs. Based in Birmingham, Alabama, Regions serves customers in the South and Midwest portions of the country.

Regions got its start in 1971 when it was known as First Alabama Bancshares Inc. Back then, the bank had $543 million in assets and 40 locations. In 2006, the bank merged with AmSouth Bancorporation. Today, Regions Bank serves more than 4 million households.

Because of its size and the variety of services it offers — everything from basic and advanced checking and savings accounts to credit cards, mortgages, auto loans and wealth management services — the bank is a good fit for customers looking for plenty of locations, a wide network of ATMs and online banking services. The key for these customers? They need to make sure they meet the minimum requirements to avoid paying any fees on the bank’s checking accounts.

Checking accounts at Regions Bank

Regions offers several tiers of checking accounts, all under the bank’s LifeGreen branding.

Basic checking: LifeGreen Checking Account

The bank’s basic checking account is its LifeGreen Checking Account. This account does charge a monthly fee: $8 if you choose online statements and $10 with paper statements. You can avoid the fee, though, by making at least one direct deposit to the checking account of at least $500 or combined direct deposits of at least $1,000 during a cycle. You can avoid the fee, too, by maintaining a $1,500 average monthly balance.

To open this basic account, you’ll need a minimum deposit of $50.

Reward checking account options: Regions Relationship Awards

All Regions Bank checking accounts allow you to earn points — called Regions Relationship Awards — that you can redeem for merchandise, gift cards, cash, travel and event tickets. You’ll earn points for maintaining your account, using online bill pay and using Regions’ ATMs.

Regions banking online for checking

Customers who prefer to do most of their banking online can choose the bank’s LifeGreen eAccess Account. This account provides online statements, free access to Regions’ online banking with bill pay and a Visa CheckCard debit card. Customers can avoid the $8 monthly fee by making any combination of at least 10 Regions CheckCard and credit card purchases. This account also requires a $50 opening deposit.

Earn interest through preferred checking

The bank’s LifeGreen Preferred Checking Account is a more advanced product, offering interest on customers’ balance. It does come with a higher monthly fee of $18. Customers can avoid this fee by maintaining an average monthly balance of $5,000 in the checking account or a combined minimum balance from all of their checking, savings, money markets, CDs and IRAs of $25,000.

Savings accounts at Regions Bank

Regions offers a variety of ways for customers to save their money, savings accounts, CDs and MoneyMarket accounts.

Basic savings account

The bank’s basic savings account requires a $50 deposit to open and comes with a $5 monthly fee. Customers can skip the fee by maintaining a daily balance of at least $300. The account, of course, does earn interest.

The bank’s LifeGreen Savings account comes with no monthly fee for customers who also have a checking account with the bank. in addition to interest, this account pays 1 percent annual savings bonus based on customers’ balance. The bonus, though, can only reach a maximum of $100. Customers need a checking account with the bank plus a $50 deposit when opening online or a $5 deposit when opening in a branch to start their account.

Money market accounts

Regions offers two levels of money market accounts: a basic account that comes with a $12 fee and requires an initial deposit of $100, and its Platinum Relationship account, which has a monthly fee of $15 and requires an opening deposit of $15,000.

Customers can avoid the monthly fee on the basic account by maintaining an minimum daily balance of $2,500. They can skip the fee on the Platinum account by maintaining a minimum daily balance of $15,000 or by opening and maintaining a LifeGreen Preferred Checking account at the bank.

CD accounts

Customers can choose from two CDs, too, the basic Regions CD and the Promotional CD. The Regions CD requires an opening balance of at least $500 for CDs with terms of 90 days or longer. That required balance rises to $2,500 for terms of seven to 89 days. To open a Promotional CD, which offers high CD rates, customers need an opening balance of at least $10,000.

Honors and charity

Regions has won several honors during its long history. A recent survey by Reputation Institute and American Banker Magazine found that Regions had the strongest reputation among banks in the United States. The bank also runs an associate volunteer program and financial literacy events while providing financial assistance to Americans with disabilities, military veterans and low- to moderate-income individuals and communities.
